News/Article Apple Releases macOS Golden Gate 27.2
Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.
In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.
A few reminders:
* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.
* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.
* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

I'm pissed to see someone edit all their old comments with a completely unrelated ad. I'm sure the answer to this question was very good given how many votes it has. Now I know what NOT to buy or install.

I'm trying to find ways to save money and after this weird update from microsoft (it wouldn't let me login to use word, excel, etc. with the right credentials, then a couple days later I tried and it worked)... This made me consider why I'm paying >$100/year to a service that I don't use often enough. Am curious if other people have ditched this and if you used any other app (e.g text edit, etc.) or even google drive that was worthwhile. Also if you made the switch, were you still able to access your previous documents and edit them on drive for example? Or how did you transition any docs if you had to?

...even though it’s a big download, it doesn’t seem to use any more space once it’s installed.
These screenshots are from my M1 MacBook Pro taken right before downloading/installing 27.2 and after. macOS storage itself is actually ~1 GB less.
The interesting thing here is the ~11 GB drop in my System Data. It seems like a win, but it’s actually cosmetic. For whatever reason, macOS 27.0.1 was counting purgeable storage as System Data (disk utility said I had 11.3 GB). This is something I don’t remember seeing in Tahoe.
When I installed 27.2 GB, my purgeable storage actually went up (to 31.3 GB) but doesn’t seem to count as System Data any more.

Ive been having spontaneous trackpad issues with my 2023 macbook pro over the past two weeks. 80% of the time, the trackpad is fine but sometimes it'll randomly freeze up. when this happens, the cursor doesn't move and the trackpad is stiff when pressing down. I usually restart it when it happens but even that doesn't always solve the issue. it just randomly "fixes" itself. ive gone to the apple store, theyve run diagnostics but nothing has been flagged (although the trackpad was working fine when diagnostics were being run). im not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, but I just wanted to put this out there in case someone has experienced a similar issue and has been able to resolve it.
edit: I do want to mention that it has also been randomly shutting off when the battery is between 20-30% without warning. not sure if that could be related, but apple didn't give me any feedback on it since nothing came up on the diagnostic.

Should I wait for the M6 or get a used newish M4? I want dedicated station for home and I really like the IMac family. I just don't know enough about these computers.
After I upgraded my iPhone, iPhone Mirroring on my Mac (M1 MacBook Air) stopped working. It kept saying "Can't connect to iPhone", even though everything was set up right: same Apple Account, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, Handoff on. Here's what was actually wrong and how I fixed it. You don't need to download anything or use sudo, and nothing gets deleted.
TL;DR: My Mac was still set to my old iPhone, which had the same name as the new one. The pairing got stuck, and a background service was holding an old list of iPhones. Pick the right iPhone in System Settings, then run killall sharingd in Terminal.
WHAT WAS ACTUALLY WRONG
Two iPhones with the same name. My old and new iPhones had the same name, and the Mac was still set to mirror the old one, which wasn't around anymore.
The pairing got stuck. When I switched to the new iPhone, the Mac sent one pairing request. The phone was asleep, the request timed out, and the Mac sat on "Pairing in progress" forever without trying again.
An old cache. Even after pairing worked, iPhone Mirroring asks a background service called sharingd which iPhones it's allowed to use. Mine had been running for almost a month and still had the old list, so the app kept refusing.
BEFORE YOU START
Make sure the basics are right:
- Same Apple Account on the Mac and the iPhone
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, on both
- Handoff on, on both (Mac: System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff. iPhone: Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff. Newer versions may call it "Continuity")
- iPhone on iOS 18 or later, Mac on macOS 15 or later
- iPhone isn't sharing its Personal Hotspot
STEP 1: OPEN TERMINAL
Press Cmd + Space, type Terminal, and press Return. For each command below, paste the whole line in and press Return.
Beginner tip: type /usr/bin/log, not just log. In the Mac's default shell, log is a different command, and you'll get a "too many arguments" error.
STEP 2: SEE WHICH IPHONES YOUR MAC KNOWS ABOUT
First open iPhone Mirroring (or the AirDrop & Handoff page in System Settings) so there's something fresh in the logs. Then run:
/usr/bin/log show --last 30m --style compact --predicate 'subsystem == "com.apple.screensharing" AND eventMessage CONTAINS "Got devices"' | tail -1
You'll see each iPhone with its name and model, plus one of these states:
- introduced: the Mac knows the phone but isn't set up to mirror it
- pairing: the Mac sent a pairing request and is still waiting for an answer
- paired: good
If two iPhones have the same name, the model at the end of the line tells you which is which.
STEP 3: PICK THE RIGHT IPHONE AND UN-STICK THE PAIRING
This step happens in System Settings, not Terminal:
Run the Step 2 command again. Your iPhone should now say paired.
STEP 4: CLEAR THE OLD CACHE
Run these three commands, one at a time:
killall "iPhone Mirroring"
killall sharingd
open -a "iPhone Mirroring"
What these do:
- The first one quits the app.
- The second one stops sharingd, the background service behind AirDrop, Handoff and the iPhone unlock check. macOS starts it again by itself a few seconds later, with a fresh cache. AirDrop and Handoff may drop out for a second.
- The third one opens the app again.
This time I got the normal first-time setup screen instead of the error. Follow its steps and you're done.
To see how long sharingd has been running, run:
ps -o lstart= -p $(pgrep -x sharingd)
Mine had been running for almost a month. Restarting the Mac would probably clear it too, but I didn't test that.
STILL NOT WORKING? SEE WHICH CHECK FAILS
Right after opening iPhone Mirroring, run:
/usr/bin/log show --last 2m --style compact --predicate 'process == "iPhone Mirroring" AND category == "ScreenContinuityApp"' | grep -E "Checking|Tearing|paired"
The app runs numbered checks (Mac supported, iCloud, Wi-Fi, pairing, and so on). The line that starts with "Tearing down the session due to:" tells you why it gave up:
- noCompatiblePhone (right after check 5): pairing isn't finished. Go back to Step 3. It can also help to restart the iPhone and run killall replicatord, which restarts the pairing service (it comes back by itself).
- noEligibleDevices (right after check 11): the old cache problem. Do Step 4.
- "Successfully found device available to be paired": you're good. Follow the setup screen.
None of these commands need sudo, and none of them delete anything. killall just stops a process, and these system services restart themselves.
(I'm on macOS 27, so the exact wording of the log messages might be a bit different on other versions.)

My MacBook randomly today when i tried to turn it on just started to do this. AT first it was okay, after 20 minutes it turned pink and turned off then kept restarting and turning pink upon logging in. It finally logged in and then at once it just did the same and ever since it hasn’t been able to work properly. I have factory reset the whole computer and it still does it. I can’t even get to the setup after factory resetting it.
It would stay on the lock screen for as long as I wanted no problem but as soon as I login it does this. Ever since I reset it, it would just keep restarting and I can’t get to the setup.
Can someone help me figure out what the problem may be?

What’s the Mac equivalent of Windows old solitaire and minesweeper? Or are there any solid free built in native games currently available as part of the OS that aren’t covered in ads?

Posted this in the camera's sub, and the responses blamed Apple devices - I'm not convinced (it's not like Apple devices can't play video properly), but figured maybe people here would know.

Hi, my Mac suddenly started restarting over and over by itself whenever I enter the password. I have successfully been able to get into my user twice since but it just crashes before I can even open the finder or something.
I have tried to start it in safe mode as well but when I enter my password, the same thing happens. And right before it restarts, user loading screen kind of gets dark and then a pink screen appears for a brief second.
I have also tried to reinstall sequoia trying to recover but it says the macintosh does not have enough available space, but i don’t know how I can even make some space considering I can’t access anything.
I am not an expert at all so if any of you have faced similar problems, please let me know what I can do to fix it!
