[Free] RadioStation for Mac: a native menu bar radio with 50 genres and stations from 240 countries
Hi r/osx, I'm Bart, a Dutch developer living in Thailand. This is my own app, so read it as a self-promo post.
RadioStation is a free radio player for the Mac. It sits in the menu bar, so a station starts without a window, and a small floating player can stay on top of your work (Control Option R shows or hides it).
What it does on the Mac:
- Stations from 240 countries, each country's full list, with your own country on top.
- 50 genres, from jazz and classical to reggae and techno. Pick one and you see all its stations at once, plus the genres next to it.
- Every station shows a few others that sound like it.
- Pause live radio and pick it up later, or go back up to 30 minutes.
- Desktop widgets for your favourites and the dial.
- The lyrics of the song that is playing, one click away.
It is native SwiftUI with its own streaming engine, for macOS 15 and later. No account, no ads from me, and the App Store privacy label says Data Not Collected. The same app runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and your favourites follow through iCloud.
https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id453459897?pt=428872&ct=rd-osx&mt=12 (in the US Mac App Store it is called FMStation)
I'd like to hear what you would want from a radio app on the Mac.

What "System Data" actually is on a Mac, and a free open-source tool I wrote to measure it
System Data in Storage settings isn't a real category. It's the remainder: whatever Settings didn't file under Applications, Documents, Photos and so on. There's no folder by that name. In practice it is mostly ~/Library, plus local snapshots, swap, files deleted but still open by a process, and APFS overhead.
Things that make the number confusing:
- Sparse files: a VM disk can claim 100 GB and occupy 2.5 GB.
- APFS clones: two files can share the same blocks, so deleting one frees little or nothing.
- Cloud placeholders (iCloud, OneDrive) look big and occupy 0.
- Local snapshots keep the blocks of files you already deleted. Apple's tool for that is tmutil.
I wrote SDTally to put numbers on each of those. It measures the whole Data volume, shows where every number comes from, and shows what macOS blocks it from reading, and whether a password would help. With root and Full Disk Access what is left is about 1-2% of used space, labeled "Not measured": folders even root can't open, files deleted but still open, changes during the scan. It only reads: no deleting, and it only goes online to check github.com for updates. It also has a menu bar icon with free space and what takes the most, even with the window closed. Rust CLI plus SwiftUI app, free, GPL-3.0-or-later, Apple Silicon and macOS 15+.
The DMG is not notarized (no paid Developer account), so first launch needs Privacy & Security > Open Anyway; you can also build from source. I built it with a lot of help from Claude Code and the commits are co-authored.

Tell me where its numbers disagree with what you see.

Has anyone got a MacBookPro11,4 and is willing to help test MavericksResurrection? I just need someone to collect some diagnostics as there are issues booting Mavericks on the 11,4. The 11,5 work is already finished so that isn't an issue

Would you download 7 GB to get fully local meeting summaries on your Mac?
I’ve seen quite a few questions about whether AI meeting summaries are processed locally or in the cloud.
Curious where people stand: would you download a roughly 7 GB model if it meant your meeting recordings and transcripts could stay on your Mac, with the summaries generated locally too?
Would that feel worth it, or would the download size put you off? And why? Is it mainly about privacy, available storage, download time, or something else?
For context, I’m working on Tapquence, and this is a trade-off we’re thinking about. The model we’re using for local summaries is around 7 GB, so I’d like to hear how other Mac users feel about that.

I made a free festival light show for your Mac that locks to the beat of whatever you're playing (Swift + Metal, open source)
Hey everyone, I built RAVE LIVE, a free festival light show for your Mac. Play music in any app (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, a DJ controller on line-in) and it finds the tempo, beat and bar line in real time, then schedules every light cue on that grid so builds and drops land where the music puts them.
The GIF above is every look in the app, about a second each. It has a procedural Stage mode (LED wall, moving heads, lasers, haze, flame jets), 33 classic visualizer presets, and AURORA, a GPU fluid sim with about a million particles you can stir with the mouse or paint with your hands through the camera.
Native Swift and Metal, macOS 14+, Apple Silicon. No account, no analytics, and the app makes no network requests. It needs Screen Recording permission only so macOS lets it hear your system audio; it doesn't record your screen.
Heads up: it uses flashing lights. Strobes are capped at 3 flashes per second by default and there's a warning on first launch. It's also not notarized yet, so macOS will ask you to approve it once under Privacy & Security.
Download and source (MIT/open source, read every line): https://github.com/jedbrnth-eng/rave-live
I'd love feedback, especially on tracks where the beat sync feels off.

MavericksResurrection is finally ready. Mavericks on the 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro with NVMe support and no USB installer needed
It’s finally done. This started as an update to my original Mavericks patcher script and became a much bigger project than I expected.
Note: This has been tested on Monterey and Tahoe. Monterey is the minimum supported macOS for this program.
Note 2: There is an ongoing issue with the 11,4. This is still being worked on. I have just released Beta 6 which provides some experimental, untested potential fixes, as well as diagnostic tools to help generate logs. If you have any issues, please raise an issue on GitHub and provide the logs there. Be aware I am unable to test the 11,4 myself as I do not have one.
MavericksResurrection installs Mavericks directly onto an internal partition or an external USB drive, from within your existing macOS installation**.** You don’t need to make a USB installer, boot into it, or manually run the post-install patches afterward. The app handles the installation and the patches.
The main additions are:
- Direct installation to an internal partition or USB drive.
- NVMe support, including buttons to add or remove it from an existing Mavericks installation without reinstalling the OS.
- A post-update audio fix. Mavericks updates can break the internal speakers, microphone and HDMI audio. Boot back into your newer macOS, select “Fix post-update issues,” and let the app repair the affected installation.
- MavericksForever integration, so the app can download and prepare Mavericks for you, or reuse an image it previously saved.
- Diagnostic logging for troubleshooting.
I tested direct installs to both my internal NVMe SSD and a USB drive, installed the available Mavericks updates, repaired audio on both, and tested removing and reinstalling NVMe support on the USB installation. Both installations boot and work, and NVMe access returned after reinstalling the driver.
This is a beta because compatibility with other NVMe drives still needs testing. My Apple NVMe SSD works, and the driver is intended to support third-party drives too, but I can’t promise every drive will work.
The app supports MacBookPro11,4 and MacBookPro11,5. My testing was on the 11,5, running the app from Monterey; the 11,4 remains untested.
Back up important files first. You need an existing Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. The app formats the partition you select—it does not partition your disk. Keep your newer macOS installation available for repairs and troubleshooting.
One important boot warning: HDMI connected directly to my 11,5’s built-in HDMI port prevented Mavericks from booting. Leave it disconnected until Mavericks reaches the desktop. HDMI through my dock worked, but other docks and the 11,4 are unconfirmed.
Huge thanks to Wowfunhappy for MavericksForever. Please direct MavericksResurrection issues to me, not them.
This took a ridiculous amount of testing. I’m very happy to finally get it out there.
The download and instructions are on the Jaegermeister-Dev GitHub repo. Please read the README before installing in case you have any questions. If you have any questions that the README doesn't cover, feel free to comment them here, and if you have any issues, either inform me here or on the GitHub repo.
If you just want to install, there's just one thing to know. Sometimes a window may reappear after its disappeared. I can't figure out why, but it doesn't affect functionality. If you see a window reappear that you had just confirmed, just ignore it. Interacting with it might interfere with the process. They seem to appear after entering admin credentials in the authentication popups. As far as I see, that's the only bug I can see from my testing.
Enjoy!

Tilde - A native macOS file manager with multi-split panes, command palette, workspaces, custom file organization and more
Tilde is a native macOS file manager built to replace Finder. Work across folders in split views, find files and run actions from a command palette, and organize your files with custom properties, filters, and groups. It's a drop-in Finder replacement that transforms how you interact with your filesystem.
Features:
- Split views - Work with multiple folders side by side in one window, with tabs in each pane.
- Command palette - Find files, jump to folders, and run file actions from the keyboard.
- Workspaces - Saved split pane layouts for quickly jumping back into your work.
- Custom sidebar groups - Bring the folders you use together into groups you define.
- Auto-updating sidebar groups - Live groups makes your sidebar dynamic. Matching items appear in your sidebar automatically and update as things change.
- Properties, filtering and grouping - Add custom fields like Status or Priority to files and folders, then use them to filter and group your views.
- Pinned folders - Keep important folders at the top inside another folder without moving or duplicating them.
- Related items - Mark folders and URLs as related to specific folders so you can jump between them, even when they live in different places.
- Markdown editing - Built-in markdown editing and code formatting allowing you to do more without leaving Tilde.
- Tonnes of little features that make sense - Space overviews, Nicknames, Related folders & URLs, custom folder icons, 'Open in Finder' replacement, and more.
- + much more...
Similar apps:
- Forklift - This is the obvious 'Finder replacement' alternative. Tilde builds on this idea, in a more native-feeling approach, with far more features fleshed out for the everyday poweruser. Tilde offers more versatile split pane functionality (essentially unlimited splits horizontally and vertically), a command palette, custom properties, sidebar spaces, live groups, a more beautiful user interface and much more.
- Bloom - Probably the closest alternative, though Tilde takes a different approach. Tilde focuses the UI on being completely flexible to your needs: it's highly adaptable Split View system offers a more flexible, fluid way to work across folders. Custom Properties, Related Items, Sidebar Spaces, Custom Groups, Live Groups and Pinned Folders change how you interact with a file manager and make it truly adapt to your work, not the other way around.
Pricing: $29.99 USD for use on 2 Macs. No subscription. Lifetime license with one year of free updates. You can use this forever. Then, if you want another year of updates, it's $19.99.
Free trial: 7 day free trial, no credit card required. Give it a go and let me know what you think!
Apple notarized: Tilde is Developer ID signed and notarized by Apple.
I’ve been building this for a long time, and I’m so excited to share with everyone, get feedback and make file management actually delightful.

We built GameRex — use a game controller as a mouse on your Mac
Hey everyone! We’re WozDev, the small indie team behind GameRex, an app that lets you use a game controller as a mouse on your Mac.
The idea is simple: if you already have a controller in your hands, you can keep using it to browse the web, scroll through pages, or interact with other apps.
With GameRex, you can:
- Move the pointer with a stick and use buttons to click and scroll.
- Assign keyboard shortcuts or a sequence of actions to a button.
- Bring up an on-screen keyboard to type a quick search.
- Adjust pointer speed and fine-tune how the pointer responds.
- Set up different controls for different apps.
The free version includes pointer control, button remapping, the on-screen keyboard, and two macros, with no time limit. Pro adds automatic per-app profile switching, custom pointer acceleration curves, and more macros.
GameRex works on Apple silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. You’ll need a compatible controller. The app is notarized by Apple.
You can watch a demo and download it here:
https://gamerex.uk/
If you try it, we’d love to hear which controller you’re using and how it feels. If anything feels awkward or confusing, we’d like to hear about that too.

Title: External keyboards typing the wrong accent characters on macOS Monterey (Portuguese layout)
Hi everyone,
I'm having a frustrating keyboard layout issue on my MacBook Pro and I'm hoping someone here can help me figure out what's going on.
My setup:
- MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch, Early 2015 (Intel)
- macOS Monterey 12.7.6
- Keyboard input source set to Portuguese (Portugal)
- External keyboards tested: Logitech Classic Keyboard 200 (USB) and CHERRY KW 9100 Slim (Bluetooth)
The built-in MacBook keyboard works perfectly with Portuguese accents. However, both external keyboards produce incorrect characters on some keys, even though macOS is set to Portuguese (Portugal).
Here are some examples of the problem:
- When I try to type
Joãousing the external keyboard, I getJo\ao. - When I try to type
avô, I getav|o. - The key physically labelled
~types\without Shift and|with Shift. - The key labelled
ºtypes~without Shift and^with Shift. - The
çkey works correctly. - Pressing the
~key followed by Space inserts the symbol directly, rather than behaving like a dead key.
I have already checked the keyboard settings in System Preferences. Portuguese (Portugal) is selected, and macOS detects the external keyboards. I also ran the Keyboard Setup Assistant for the CHERRY keyboard and completed the physical key identification step.
Unfortunately, I cannot find another Portuguese keyboard layout to select in macOS Monterey. The only Portuguese layout available is the one I'm already using.
I've also noticed that this happens with two different external keyboards, while the built-in keyboard works correctly. This makes me wonder whether the issue is related to the difference between Portuguese Mac and Portuguese PC keyboard layouts, or whether macOS is mapping the physical keys incorrectly.
I'm not looking to remap the Command, Option, Control or Shift keys. The problem is specifically with accent keys and character mappings.
Is there a way to make macOS correctly interpret the accent keys on an external Portuguese PC keyboard, without changing how the built-in MacBook keyboard works?
Would a custom keyboard layout, Ukelele, Karabiner-Elements, or another solution be appropriate for this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

🟣 Two small Mac apps I made: ChimeQuotes and FolderContents
I’ve been working on two lightweight Mac utilities. Neither is trying to become your next productivity system.
ChimeQuotes: a little incidental uplift
A menu bar app that shows a notificaton quote at intervals you choose, with an optional chime. Use the bundled author lists or import your own.
There’s also a quote poster window. I like leaving it visible so there’s something worth reading when I come back to the Mac. You can copy a quote or save it as text, PDF, or an image. Custom backgrounds.
No account, tracking, or cloud sync.
ChimeQuotes on the Mac App Store
---
FolderContents: what’s actually in that folder?
Downloaded folders accumulate. Their names don’t always help.
FolderContents puts a compact summary in Finder’s Comments column:
png: 42, jpg: 18, pdf: 3
It also surfaces version numbers for Xcode projects and Chrome extensions, plus details such as image dimensions and media duration.
Run it on selected items through a Finder Quick Action, drag items onto the app, or let it watch Downloads.
Keep, delete, or dive in. A little more information before you decide.
FolderContents on the Mac App Store
I’m the developer of both. I’d appreciate practical feedback:
would quote chimes feel welcome or intrusive? I enjoy a little incidental wisdom.
And what information, in the Finder Comments column, would help you scan a crowded Downloads folder? 🟢I use both daily.🟢

FileDesk_Mac file manager[Free]
**I built FileDesk, a Mac file manager with split panes, a temporary file shelf, and custom folder colors**
Hi everyone! I’ve been working on **FileDesk**, a macOS file manager designed to make organizing files across multiple folders easier.
Here are some of its main features:
* **Split panes and tabs:** Open up to six panes side by side, resize them, and keep different folders in separate tabs.
* **Temporary file shelf:** Collect files from different folders, then copy them to a destination together. Clearing the shelf removes the list entries without deleting the originals.
* **Themes and folder customization:** Choose a theme, use dark mode, or pick your own colors. Give individual folders custom colors and add an image or icon in the center while keeping the folder shape.
* **Previews and media playback:** Preview files and play supported video and audio directly inside the app.
* **Batch renaming:** Rename multiple files with a preview of the changes.
* **Cloud and server connections:** Browse connected storage alongside your local folders.
* **AirDrop and Taildrop:** Use AirDrop for nearby Apple devices, or Taildrop to send files to your other Tailscale-connected devices—including a Windows PC.
FileDesk supports **Apple Silicon and Intel Macs**. Personal, noncommercial use is free; business and institutional use requires a separate paid license.
Screenshots, user guide, and downloads:
[FileDesk website](https://igomumugo.github.io/)
I’d appreciate feedback, especially on the split-pane workflow, temporary shelf, and customization options.
