Question Why is selective mutism misunderstood?
Just some background: I am diagnosed with autism. Not diagnosed with ADHD but i suspect i also have it. I first had selective mutism when i was 12. It was caused by my mother's abuse. I used to be a loud hyperactive child when i was around 5-7 years old, and my ADHD was active. My mother abused me to suppress my hyperactivity and make me quiet and behaved.
When i was a 14 year old teenager, i overcame my selective mutism, but it wasn't chosen and was caused by peer pressure. When i spoke, my ADHD got active again, and i became a loud hyperactive teenager. My mother and other authority figures abused me again to suppress my hyperactivity and make me quiet and behaved (Example: My mother put me in a psych ward and gave me meds to make me quiet and behaved, labeling my speech and hyperactivity as "anger issues"). Now that i am 22, my selective mutism came back.
Whenever i tell this to AIs, AIs always misunderstand my selective mutism as "grey rock method" "information diet" "choosing to not speak" "strategic silence", which is absolutely not true. It's not chosen, it is involuntary due to fear that my mother will punish me if i speak. I stopped using AI because of this. It makes so many mistakes then it acts like it's the one who should make decisions for me rather than myself, so i'm the one who paid the price for AI's mistakes.
People also misunderstand my selective mutism as me "not wanting to speak", which is again not true. It not a choice, it is involuntary.
Anyone else had your selective mutism misunderstood?
