so i spent the last week tuning instead of actually playing games, as one does.
steel nomad stock: 13,952
steel nomad after mVolt+: 16,969
that’s +21.6% on a card that already costs more than my first car. avg clock went from 2857 to 3030 mhz. my GPU is now basically a space heater with RGB.
the card: gigabyte aorus rtx 5090 xtreme waterforce (360mm aio). i paid extra for the aio so it can run cooler, then immediately used that headroom to make it run hotter
what i’m running:
- power limit 110% (the connector is fine. the connector is fine. the connector is fine.)
- memory +3999. not +4000. +4000 crashes instantly like it has a personal problem with that number
- xbar +450, sys +650 with +50mV. sys actually does something, xbar is mostly vibes
- custom v/f curve: around +300 where the card actually lives (~1000mV), and the top capped so it stops trying to hit 3200+ and dying in loading screens
- temps under load: gpu ~65°C, memory ~80°C
things i learned the hard way:
- the 5090 is always power limited in heavy stuff, so the trick isn’t more voltage, it’s more mhz at the same voltage. stock it sits at 1070mV doing 2930mhz, now ~1020mV doing ~3050
- every single crash i had was the top of the curve when the game goes from loading screen → full load. witcher 3 crashed so many times it should get a dev credit
- colder card = more mhz. my fans now sound like a jet taking off but hey, free performance
mVolt+ is honestly ridiculous, per point v/f curve, xbar/sys, voltage demands, stuff afterburner doesn’t even know exists. dev deserves a medal: https://github.com/b00nz/mVolt
credit where it’s due: the crash-hunting method (watch clock + voltage graphs, see at what voltage it died, lower only those points) came from this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/comments/1xbnhjx/mvolt_guide_the_max_safe_daily_overclocks_for_5090/. go read it, it’s way more useful than my rambling
if my house burns down i’ll post an update. probably.
your card is not my card, don’t copy numbers blindly etc etc
