U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Apple face-time removed my bf from the call after I removed my bra. Is this a new feature??

5.9k Upvotes

So as the title suggests I was on FaceTime with my boyfriend earlier today chatting, while on call I was getting changed and removed my bra for a brief moment. About 3 seconds after removing my bra his screen turned into a blurred screen, his audio cut out and I could not see him, so I hung up thinking that maybe his connection dropped out? When I called him back and asked if his WiFi dropped out he said no and that Apple suspended the call and gave him a ‘content warning’ after I removed my shirt and asked him if he consented to continue with the call. Despite him clicking the button to continue with the call, Apple did not allow him to return to the call and he hung up.

I guess I’m posting this here because this has never happened to me before and I have no clue what this could be. I have not yet downloaded the latest software update and if I’m being honest I don’t read the full T’s and C’s that come with each update :,)

I know it’s probably really silly to feel this way but I genuinely feel violated, as though something was watching me. Maybe I’m being a little overdramatic.

Should I report someone for violating their parole?

4.8k Upvotes

I met this guy at work who for whatever reason decided to openly talk about being a registered sex offender. Looked him up and yeah sure enough "indecency with a min0r". He also mentioned that he's not allowed to have social media because of his parole or whatever. He recently started boasting about how he made a Snapchat and has been talking to young girls that he "hopes" are legal(he said girls lie about their age sometimes). It didn't sit right with me and now I'm wondering if I should report him in case he's being a creep. And in case anyone is wondering he's 39.

Edit: It's done y'all. Called his officer and the state office.

2nd edit: HOLY CRAP. I got off work and had 400+ notifications I have never had a post get so much stuff. I am a little new to reddit so first thanks for awards, ngl unexpected. Also, I'm sorry to the people who were upset at me asking this question in general. I've never been in a situation like this and I was the only one who asked out loud if we should report him from my coworkers. Even the ones that agreed with his boasting being off putting said to leave it alone so that's why I came to reddit because unbiased opinions. I did not mean offense or to be stupid y'all I'm sorry. Also, when I called they didn't say they'd keep me updated. Just took notes on what I heard him say and asked his full name and where I saw his offender status. They verified he was indeed a offender and said they'd forward all the info to someone who would investigate. Other than that, idk what'll happen but I guess I will do a 3rd edit if anything else happens. Just gonna keep my head down at work and not say I reported anything also. Thank y'all for your opinions!

I thought becoming an adult... involved a lot more sex. Was i wrong?

This is gonna sound a bit funny but when i was a kid (and hit puberty), i remember looking at adults in public and seeing so many people walking about: men, women, tall, short, attractive, not so attractive, and thinking to myself..

"Wow they all must be having so much sex, I can't wait to become an adult!"

I honestly thought becoming an adult would involve just a bit more work (vs being in school), but a LOT more sex. Like sex was just a regular part of an adult's daily routine or something.

Then i became an adult. And the reality (after a decade+) is that it's the exact opposite. Being an adult involves a LOT more work, yet much less sex than i imagined.

I see people giving others advice: Go hit the gym! Go join a club! Go to bars! Work on yourself and everything will work out! We have to dress well, make X amount of money, post great pictures of ourselves, be the correct age/maturity, be in the right place, learn "game"/seduction techniques, spend $15/drink at bars, etc.

I'm out here participating in bouldering, skiing for years, have an active photography hobby, traveled to 20+ countries, regularly go to bars/nightclubs, have a wide friend group in multiple continents. Yet if all just feels so.. exhausting.

I even ask my friends (some of whom are REALLY attractive) how often they're getting regular sex, and i swear almost every one of them these days are basically going months also without it.

And to be clear, I'm not sex obsessed. But when you're starved for physical intimacy, it just drains the energy from everything else that you do, you know what i mean? I've been in 2 longterm relationships, so it's not like I've gotten zero either.

I feel like there naturally should've been a place in society where people could go find like-minded people and say to each other in an honest way: "Hey, sex feels great. Let's agree to do it safely". I believe the closest we came to that was Tinder, but as with most things, it got ruined by capitalism.

Yes the universe doesn't owe us anything, but it's pretty grim out there ngl

If you live in the US and have diabetes and have absolutely no way to pay for your insulin, does your government just let you die?

I'm Australian so the thought of not being able to afford medical care is pretty foreign to me.

Another question, if you have no way to pay for hospital stays or surgeries what happens? Like obviously you get a debt, but what if you have no way to pay that debt? Can you go to jail?

How do poor people have babies if just birthing the baby in a hospital cost nearly $100k? Are there cheap hospitals or birthing clinics for struggling people?

What happens to people who didn’t save enough money for retirement?

Obviously they need to rely on other sources of income to survive but what do they actually do? I see people spend all of their money on random stuff and say that they’ll figure it out in the future or that it’s a waste of time to try to save for retirement for whatever reason but what are the actual consequences of this?

How do TV show producers put out casting calls for ugly people?

1.0k Upvotes

For example in Curb your enthusiasm, Larry David knows a blind man dating a woman, the man excitedly tells larry that the woman is a model, but Larry makes it abundantly clear that that could not be the case. So how do they cast that specific “ugly“ actress, whose role is central to them being ugly. Or do they just skirt that fact?

Are there "weeaboos" but for Native Americans?

Do Native Americans have their own "weeaboos", or outsiders (such as white people) who have an obsession/fixation for their culture, and want to be like them, or study their lore, etc.?

If so, how are they viewed by natives?

Do older women (65+) have trouble dating given they outnumber men so significantly?

I often wonder about this. Given men die significantly earlier, women outnumber men heavily as age increases.

So, are there women who want a partner and can’t find them? Do they date younger men? Hook up with younger men?

Curious 47/m here

Is it weird for a male scientist to have an interest in researching women’s health?

I had a group assignment at uni and we were doing some general introductions and I mentioned I’m doing a dual degree in biomed engineering and biotech and that my interest is in furthering women’s diagnostic and preventative health technology. One of the girls in the group said that was kinda weird that I wanted to study women and that I should leave it to female scientists to do that stuff.

My interest are purely based on the women in my family struggling for diagnoses for fairly standard and common issues (endo for one) where as I can walk in to any random doctor and get a diagnosis of all sorts of things within 1-3 sessions. Women’s health just isn’t taken as seriously and I would like to change that.

How is the economy supposed to work if no one has a job because of AI?

Thinking about this larger trend lately (today Microsoft), isn’t the economy built upon people spending money? And if AI is replacing everyone’s job, where does the money come from? There’s no progress towards a universal basic income. Doesn’t it just collapse if this trend continues?

Genuinely, cooking is cheaper than eating out, right?

I've heard so many people say, friends included, that eating out is cheaper if it's just one person, and cooking at home is better for two or more. But can't that one person just cook and have left overs? Or cook smaller portions and save the rest of the ingredients for later? I live alone and am so positive that cooking is saving me money, but so many people tell me otherwise.

I plan my meals and shop accordingly so I am hoping I'm right and that fast food wouldn't save me time and money lol.

I taste a very unpleasant soapy bitterness to cilantro, but I know that some people love it. If you don’t have the gene that makes it taste soapy, what does it taste like to you?

Why has the ‘I don’t understand taxes’ grift become so popular?

It’s always been around ‘I turned down a raise because it would put me in a higher tax bracket and I would make less money’. Or more recently ‘why doesn’t the government only charge us taxes after expenses’.

I feel recently I am seeing them everywhere. They don’t really make sense because who are they for? If do your taxes you will realize these arguments make no sense.

How many of you would actually attempt to survive during an apocalypse?

Say nukes dropped all over the world, civilisation collapses. You can possibly survive if you fight tooth and nail every day to do so. There will never be a real respite and the world won't recover in your life time. How many of you would even try? I know I wouldn't.
