Discussion The truth about printer subscription programs and many misconceptions about them

Dear all,

I work in the printer industry. For a very well-known consumer products manufacturer that gets discussed on this sub a lot.  I will not disclose which manufacturer I work for, nor will I disclose any manufacturer I do not work for (since the industry is relatively small eliminating 1 or 2 will make it generally too obvious as to which I do work for) as I am not officially speaking on behalf of the company. But, I want to set the record straight on subscription programs because some of you are drastically misinformed and it is very frustrating to see as someone who understands these programs as well as basic logic.

There are two types of subscription programs. Each of the major consumer manufacturers offers at least 1 of these programs, some offer both.

The first type of program is an auto-reordering program. The printer can tell (via various ways depending on each manufacturer) when the ink / toner is low and when it hits a certain point that will trigger an order of the ink/toner that device uses. Most manufactures that offer this will first send you an email letting you know that an order has been triggered and it will allow you to skip the delivery of the consumable and thus not get charged. If you allow the order to go through you are purchasing that consumable. That consumable is yours, you own it, just as if you walked into a Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, or bought it on Amazon… You can cancel the “subscription” the next day and continue to use that consumable until it is empty.

The second type of program is a true subscription program. **THIS** is what many of you are vastly misinformed and / or are irrational about. In this program *you are not purchasing a consumable* at all. You are paying the manufacturer for X number of pages per month. The manufacturer will send you a consumable to use because the printer needs ink / toner to work but, that is not what you are paying for. You are paying the manufacturer $Y per month to print up to X pages per month.. that’s it. Of course you can print over that X number and pay an overage (just like years ago with cell phones).. and of course, you can print under that X number and some pages will roll-over to future months (just like years ago with cell phones). The owner of the consumable is the manufacturer. You never bought it, you never owned it. Therefore, it is not yours to use after you end the subscription! The only reason most manufactures do not ask for it back is because they don’t want to pay for shipping it back to them. But, they still own it… not you.  You can think of this like renting an apartment. You are paying a landlord $X per month to live in their building. The landlord is providing the building for you to live in while you are paying rent. You do not own the building. and when you stop paying rent you are no longer allowed to continue living in the building. Just like your Netflix subscription, Apple TV subscription and Disney+ subscription.. when you stop paying for the subscription, you stop getting to use the service. Just because while you were paying you had access to the content does not mean you at any time owned that content and get to continue watching it once you stop paying the subscription.

I truly hope this helps clarify somethings for some of you. Others I understand are lost causes but, I will do my best to answer any questions I can.

Troubleshooting Fuser Unit Heater Issue OKI

OKI MC362. Fuser unit is not heating on power on. Error 173 on printer which is apparently due to the fuser heater not functioning. Checked pin resistances on fuser as advised in the maintenance manual and can't find any incorrect values but apparently that doesn't rule out this issue. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZwGmqjFlHg&t=15)

It seems impossible to replace just the fuser heater itself for these printers (doesn't seem to be anything on ebay) and that the only option is to buy a new one .

It would be a shame to throw it out and additionally the new ones are not exactly cheap, especially since I've hardly used it at all.

So is there any chance at all of repairing it. Thanks

Purchasing Question regarding HP Designjet T950

• Upvotes

I'm currently trying to choose between HP Designjet T850 and T950. The T950 has everything i want, but I'm worried that the small basket will create folds when I print 2 meter long drawings.

Anyone got any experience with how the printer handle long printing formats? The t850 looks to have a more regular basket which I'm used to.

Any replies would be much appreciated as I can't seem to find any info about this.

Ciao a tutti,
Ho bisogno di un consiglio per quanto riguarda questa accoppiata stampante/cartucce.
Come potete vedere dalle foto allegate:

Purchasing Do “buy it for life” printers even exist?

Hi! Looking for printer recommendations, open to both inkjet or laser.

Yet again I am in the market for a printer. I am so tired of buying a new one every few years. Any recommendations for a black & white (no color) printer that will last a bit longer? The deciding factor these days seems to be how much the black ink cartridge is when it is time to replace the ink.

My last printer was a Canon, I have watched the replacement cartridge price climb to over $100 now for ONE ink cartridge. Is this just the norm now?

I really do not want a “smart” anything. I don’t care if it is Bluetooth, honestly I would pay extra for the ability to just print via a cord instead of constantly trying to pair Bluetooth. I don’t need it to connect to the internet or toast bread (lol), all I need is to print a lot of boring black and white paperwork items! Any recommendations are appreciated

Troubleshooting Canon TS705a missing yellow

Hi all, recently I noted that my Canon printer started having troubles printing yellow. The only way to print it decently is to set printing quality to hight. I use compatible cartidges and I used the same brand since the first time. I also updated the fw to the latest version and, of course, tried with another cartidge. Removed the head, cleaned it with isopropyl on contacts too not showed any improvement. Since heads costs like a new printer do anyone have any suggestions before buying a new printer?

Thanks.

I have the XP-450B label printer and have used it for about 7 years with my Mac no issues. I just updated my Mac OS and the printer now says this software is not compatible!

The website that supplies the driver also seems to have disappeared?

Anyone know if there is a new driver and where to get it from?

Other I seem to go through toner quickly...

I have a Brother HL-3270CDW laser printer and despite buying OEM "high capacity" toner cartridges and not printing a lot (maybe 200-300 pages/month) it seems like I go through a lot of cartridges. Both black and color. I had an old Brother HL-5250DN which seemed like it didn't use nearly as much toner.

Is this just shrinkflation, with less toner in the cartridge???

Purchasing Printer options for retail “Santa Photos”

Looking for a quick and easy (but decent quality) printer to print out photos for our customers- Santa is stopping by our small business store and we would like to give our customer’s a free printed photo to take home. I was hoping to give out 5x7 photos BUT I can’t seem to find one that prints that size. I may need to order a 4x6 photo printer- so wondering what anyone thinks would be good! Planning on printing 50-100 photos during our event, so something that won’t poop out on us and can get the job done. *We will be using my daughter’s Canon mirrorless camera- R100.

Troubleshooting HP DeskJet 2975 stuck on E9 after failed firmware update. Is there any way to recover it?

Hi everyone, I'm having a frustrating issue with an HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2975 (2900 series), and I'm hoping someone here might know how to fix it.

The printer was working fine, but I decided to try HP's official firmware updater (version 6.29.7.0). Unfortunately, the update failed, and now the printer is permanently stuck displaying E9.

I've tried restarting it, attempting a factory reset using the button combinations I could find, and running the official HP firmware updater again over USB. Nothing has worked so far. The updater either freezes during the process or displays an "internal error" saying that the printer cannot complete the request.

What's interesting is that Windows still recognizes the printer over USB, but not as a normal printer anymore. It appears as hp_fwupdate, with USB ID 03F0:FF53.

I've done some additional troubleshooting, and Windows detects four USB interfaces, including two WinUSB interfaces. USBView can read the device's descriptors successfully, so the printer is still responding to basic USB requests.

I also examined the official HP firmware updater and found references to recovery mode and firmware update functions, which suggests that the software is designed to handle printers in this state. However, the recovery process doesn't seem to work with mine.

At this point, I'm not sure whether the firmware is corrupted, the printer is stuck in recovery mode, or the HP updater is failing for another reason.

Has anyone experienced something similar with an HP DeskJet 2900-series printer? Is there a way to recover it from E9 without specialized equipment?

I'd really appreciate any advice. I can provide USB diagnostics, logs, or additional information if needed.

Thanks in advance.

Purchasing Buying a brothers laserprinter first printer in a decade, recommendations + or opinion on my choice?

Hey, so yeah buying a printer for the first time in 10+ years.

Read Laserprinter is the best n most robust and issue free for text docs

Goal: no pictures only text print outs 5-10 pagers and an occasional 150 page document

Heard brothers is the only decent printer in the 100-280 euros range
Is that correct?
Or should i look at other brands?

Just want a printer that works normal without any of the frustrating antics i read about all over the internet people pulling their hairs out

Also very confused about these print subscriptions i see

Was looking at these 2

Purchasing Canon MF665Cdw & Rtings review: the ADF scan is awful?

After an insightful response to my purchasing recs post, I am considering the Canon MF665Cdw. Rtings did an in-depth review and has troubling ( to me) data on the quality difference between output from a flatbed scan versus output from the single-pass duplex adf.

If you have that printer, have you found a fix for this?

Troubleshooting Need Assistance with setting up an HP LASER 303DW printer please !

Hi Everyone!

I've bought a HP LASER 303DW 4 days ago and I've been having trouble connecting it to my internet wifi and cable..basically lot of connectivity issues..and when i try to use direct wifi it does connect but has some printing issue instruction that fails (like printing one page on one sheet instead of duplex).

If someone can assist me to set it up properly with guided step by step with button instructions(including a full printer network reset as well) and any links for applications/drivers needed to be downloaded.

I've tried their support.hp.com directed various applications like HP app , HP smart app , hp laser 300 series driver installer and no luck..it keeps failing recognizing the printer itself or if it connects its very slow and those prints attempt usually give a disconnected from host or error decoding (error 11-1114 and 11-1112).

Please help and free me from this misery i just want to use my printer 😭😭😭😭

PS: the wifi 5g and 2.4ghz r both separated with different name and passwords. Ive also logged into the EWS (printer's web application) and tried setting the general wifi from there and no luck...I've also looked up on videos for this on yt/their website and its clubbed under 300/3000 series and has different button instructions (4 buttons instead of 3 buttons)

Troubleshooting Black won’t come out solid from Epson XP 7100?

Post image
1 Upvotes

(is this “streaky”? or is there another term for it?)

Essentially the black won’t print solidly. It did print solidly in the past; I’ve had this printer for around 3 years I think. It doesn’t get heavy daily usage but I do ask it to print high resolution PDFs and jpgs on a variety of paper stocks about once every 2 weeks on average.

But this has been happening more lately, as well as what I think is leakage, as I’ll get some wet liquid ink spots along the leading edge and even sometimes in a thin line down the center of the paper. (The examples of this I have on hand I can’t show, as they’re private client work.) If I run a cycle to clean the print head, it stays clean for a couple of sheets and then gets back up to mischief and wet ink.

Essentially: What do I need to do or clean to make this not happen?

(extra: this is printed on bright white 24lb paper; my ink was purchased within the last 3 months and is official epson brand ink. The image above was a PDF, if that makes a difference. let me know if more info would be helpful?)

Purchasing Will printer shops print a sample?

I’m looking for a printer for my greeting card business. I think I’ve settled on the Epson EcoTank 8500 but before I spend the money I’d like to know for sure that the quality will match the print on demand supplier that I’ve been using so far.

Is a printer shop likely to print a sample for me if I bring my own cardstock and image file? I’m in the UK.
