Discussion I Give Up On DolbyVision Support
"I'm tired, boss"
Currently on AppleTV 4k Gen 3, and almost a third of my library is still unplayable. I'm having issues with both DV 7 and 8, even though people seem to be only reporting issues with DV 8 playback.
I was contemplating buying the new AppleTV 4k Gen 4(has native DV 8 support), using the dovi-convert docker, and converting all my DV 7 to DV8. But honestly, I didn't want to spend $300 testing if that would resolve my issues. (If the developer of dovi-convert is reading this, it would be awesome if you added an option to strip out DV 7 and 8, since you utilize dovi_tool)
So I decided to stop chasing my tail and just come accept that I can do without DV; even though my TV which is below 1000 NITS would benefit from it. Just vibe coded a script utilizing dovi_tool that strips out all DV 8 and 7 profiles, and leaves the underlying HDR10. Anything without DV 8 and 7 it ignores. I tested three movies I had issues with, and now they are playing flawlessly. I just setup the script in a Flow in TDARR docker and I'm YOLOing it at my library.
Am I a fool playing with fire? Maybe. But this is the level of desperation I'm at trying to make sure my library is playable. Would love for an option on the Plex app to simply just ignore DV 7 and 8, and just automatically play the HDR10 layer.
Before anyone mentions Infuse, I'm aware it can play DV 8 and properly handles DV 7 fallback to HDR10. I just don't want to be forced to use another app.
