Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Support Someone received an iMessage from my number that I never sent, and it isn’t showing on my iPhone. What could cause this?

Hi everyone! I’m hoping someone who understands iMessage or has experienced something similar can help me figure out what happened.

(Coach screenshot is white background and mine is the black background)

Today at 8:41 AM, my coach sent me a message about starting the pool heater. At 12:36 PM, she sent another message asking if we were still on for swim that afternoon.

The strangest part is that, within seconds of messaging me, she received a gray incoming message in our existing conversation that said:
“You have the wrong phone number.”

I did not type or send that message. It also does not appear anywhere in my own Messages conversation.
Coach then messaged me and another person in a group, and I received those messages in the group text.

When Coach arrived she showed me her phone with the our texts and asked if I changed my number. I said I didn’t and we doubled checked my contact info on her phone. I then texted her saying, “Hey Coach!” to see if if my text went through and it did! She received that text right then and there as she was showing me our text thread.

A few additional details:
● We both use iPhones.
● The conversation was our existing individual iMessage thread.
● My outgoing messages were successfully received by her.
● We were later able to communicate in a group chat without an issue.
● My Apple Account device list showed only devices I recognize.
● I changed my Apple Account password and confirmed that two-factor authentication is enabled.
● My trusted phone number and Messages “Send & Receive” settings are correct.
● I contacted T-Mobile, and they didn’t identify an issue.
● I contacted Apple’s automated support system, but it didn’t give me a specific explanation.
I’m updating my iPhone and plan to speak with a live Apple Support representative.

My questions are:
1. How could an incoming iMessage appear on someone else’s phone as coming from my number if I never sent it and it isn’t in my own conversation?
2. Could this be an iMessage registration, syncing, or software issue?
3. Could another Apple device or session be involved even if it doesn’t appear in my device list?
4. Has anyone experienced this exact combination of an unexpected message and missing incoming iMessages? Did you ever find out what caused it?

I’m not trying to jump to the conclusion that I’ve been hacked. I just want to understand what could explain this and what I should ask Apple to investigate.

Thank you!

Discussion Duo: nobody talking about my biggest gripe?!

All of the other objections about the device are overblown. My screen is fine, touchID is fine (especially with Apple Watch unlock), and the mini front screen is far more comfortable to use than I expected.

But my biggest complaint 4 days into use: how it behaves open on a flat surface. It rocks - the two sides adjacent to the camera bump are lifted off the surface and will fall and tap the surface with any screen touch. I was about to go buy an Apple Pencil USB-C to draw on the iPhone, but I’m not even sure I could draw on it with it rocking back and forth. Definitely won’t ditch my iPad for drawing after using this. That or I’ll have to set the phone on a plush towel or something just to keep it still while drawing. I don’t know… seems like such a major design oversight. I’ve always hated how the camera bumps made iPhones unstable, and was excited to see them extend the bump on the 17s and later for stability.. and I hate how unstable the Duo is on hard flat surfaces.

[end gripe]

That said - big fan of the phone.

Discussion I finally switched to apple and I’m not going back

• Upvotes

ive owned multiple phones from most brands throughout my life and ive switched to an iphone 14 for 2 months now and i cant see myself turning back.

What truly shocked me was how well optimized it was. my previous phone was a xiaomi 13T. it was big, ugly and mid at most categories but it was very durable (which was great for me because im extremely clumsy) and the charging was the best i had ever seen, fully charging from 0% in like 30 mins, therefore i never considered an upgrade. however it then updated and it got destroyed completely all for a fake control centre and a fake 10 fps dynamic island. As if that wasn’t enough, now with this update if the screen turned off while playing music through bluetooth the sound would be so distorted to the point that you couldn’t hear anything.

I decided to upgrade to a refurbished flagship, settled on an iphone and everything, other than the keyboard, was an upgrade. Every app is so well optimized and so pretty. Many things are a lot simpler and a lot easier like passwords and payments and its truly such a better experience overall. Even if by the time i have to upgrade apple is making subpar flagships i cant see myself going back to android.

edit: minor punctuation and sentence straight errors and added paragraphs to make it easier to read

Discussion iOS 27.2 adds Synth ID for photos edited with built in Apple Photos tools

For those who don't know, Synth-ID is an invisible watermark used to detect AI-generated content.

If you edit images using the built in Object Remover or Extender in Photos in iOS 27.2, the image will receive Synth-ID now.

I don't know what to think of it. Yes, it makes sense for the Extender etc., but why for the Object Remover? If I take a picture with my iPhone camera and remove an unwanted object or person, then all apps like Instagram etc. will flag it as AI using Synth-ID now, confusing people even though the image is not AI generated.

Object Remover isn't generative AI and shouldn't get Synth-ID in my opinion. Strictly speaking, it's not even an AI feature. Before the AI hype and before phone manufacturers had such things built in, this feature existed for ages through apps. It was never an issue.

News/Rumour Apple Lowered Inspection Standards on Foldable iPhone Duo Amid Supply Crunch, Chinese Foxconn Insider Alleges

Chinese reporters just spoke with a Chinese Zhengzhou Foxconn insider on the iPhone Duo assembly line.

I found the article but it's in Chinese so I'm just using translate tool .

https://www.jiemian.com/article/15241414.html

Apple’s first-ever foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, has run into reports of display issues within just its first week on shelves.

According to current media coverage, two cases have gained wide attention: one involving a display unit at the Apple Store in Shanghai’s Lujiazui IFC Mall, and another shared by an Australian user on Reddit. A handful of other users have also voiced similar concerns across social media, sparking considerable discussion online.

While individual usage conditions and the extent of damage vary slightly, the reports share striking similarities: the devices had only been folded a handful to a few dozen times. During the final unfolding, users heard an unusual sound along the crease, quickly followed by a 3-to-5-centimeter crack appearing beneath the hinge line, alongside another crack running perpendicular to its apex on the right side of the screen. Both cracks presented as white pixel bands, accompanied by dark spots of varying sizes near their intersection.

The root cause likely points to the iPhone Duo’s hinge mechanism.

The hinge is engineered from precision components, including gears, springs, and interlocking metal joints. Multiple teardown reports indicate that Apple adopted the relatively common "waterdrop" teardrop hinge design, but incorporated curved guide rails to regulate joint movement—a mechanism designed to alleviate stress on the display panel whenever the phone is opened or closed.

In a teardown report previously released by repair authority iFixit, analysts speculated that the screen failures might stem from the central support bar failing to retract properly when the phone closes, thereby exerting excessive pressure on the display. In addition, the curved rails guiding hinge movement rise above surrounding components during folding; if they fail to shift as intended, there is a distinct possibility they could physically interfere with the screen.

A reporter from Jiemian News spoke with a Foxconn employee, who confirmed that the underlying cause of the screen issues closely mirrors this teardown analysis.

The employee further noted that amidst tight manufacturing capacity, Apple had previously eased certain quality control standards for yield rates to secure steady supply—a decision that inevitably increased the likelihood of units with defective displays reaching consumers.

Even with this slight easing of standards, however, the actual failure rate may not be as severe as initial reports suggest. Several distributors told Jiemian News that defective units have been rare in their inventory, and they have yet to see noticeable after-sales issues.

Addressing the problem, the Foxconn source noted that production lines have already carried out an emergency swap for a batch of materials. Actual manufacturing remains unaffected, and Apple has not altered its inventory targets. Industry channel sources told Jiemian News that Apple’s stocking goal for the iPhone Duo remains at roughly 7.5 million units this year.

Apple’s reluctance to tighten inspection standards likely comes down to one clear reality: it cannot afford to miss its window of opportunity in the foldable market.

Leading up to the iPhone Duo’s release, rivals such as Huawei and Xiaomi introduced their latest foldable flagships. Distributors noted a clear surge in sales for Huawei’s Pura X Max, with weekly sales climbing 27% week-over-week—though they added that promotions during the "Double 11" shopping festival also played a role.

To ensure the iPhone Duo delivers strong commercial results, Apple has mobilized extensive resources across retail, operations, marketing, branding, and its executive leadership to build momentum.

In mid-October, Tim Cook, Executive Chairman of Apple’s Board of Directors, and Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan visited China in quick succession. During a tour of Foxconn's Zhengzhou facility, Khan stressed that the iPhone Duo is scaling production in line with Apple’s traditionally high quality standards. Cook made a rare point of emphasizing that the iPhone Duo is manufactured exclusively in China, expressing high hopes for its domestic performance. Meanwhile, newly appointed CEO John Ternus took to Weibo right on schedule on pre-order day to share pre-purchase guidance for customers.

On the software front, Apple’s iOS developer relations team has been actively pushing app optimization forward. Just before the launch, Apple updated its official website with compatibility updates for a wide range of popular apps—spanning e-commerce, ride-hailing, content communities, productivity, video, and gaming—with WeChat’s adaptation drawing particular interest.

Since the device was first announced, Apple teams have hosted more than 50 developer sessions across 20 countries to encourage wider adoption of its dedicated SDKs and features.

The iPhone Duo is not just Apple’s inaugural foldable phone; it also arrives squarely in the middle of a historic leadership transition. Whether evaluated on pure product merits or as a test of market confidence in its new executive team, this is a pivotal battle Apple simply cannot afford to lose.

Support Apple Pencil USB-C Disconnects from iPhone Duo Repeatedly

I connected my brand new Apple Pencil USB-C to my iPhone Duo through a USB-C cable from Apple. It works beautifully for a few minutes then disconnects, after which I have to connect with a cable again, only for the problem to repeat. I tried restarting the phone, forgetting the Apple Pencil from the bluetooth menu, charging the pencil fully, and even resetting the iPhone Duo. When the problem first occurred I was on iOS 27.2 public beta. But since then I downloaded the newly released version (not the beta) and the problem persists.

Has anyone faced the same issue? When it disconnects, I can see it listed under Bluetooth settings and it says Not Connected. When I press on it a message appears saying "Apple Pencil Not Connected. To use Apple Pencil, connect it to your iPhone using a USB-C cable."

And to make sure that Bluetooth is not the issue, I used my AirPods 4 for over 20 minutes without issues.

Support iPhone 17 Pro Max concert audio is terrible (weak right channel) compared to 16 Pro. Anyone else?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I recently recorded some videos at a Metallica concert (Sphere) using my new iPhone 17 Pro Max, set to the highest video quality. Unfortunately, the audio turned out to be really bad.
When I listen to the recordings with headphones, the overall sound quality is poor, and the right channel is almost completely dead/super quiet compared to the left.
I just upgraded from an iPhone 16 Pro, which always captured incredible audio at live shows. On both phones, the audio recording setting was set to "Spatial".
Has anyone else experienced this with the 17 Pro Max? Could this be an iOS software bug with how Spatial Audio handles very loud environments, or should I be worried about a defective microphone?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Discussion iPhone Duo Touch Screens

• Upvotes

So I am on day 2 with my Duo and noticed some issues on both the inner display and outer display. When watching Netflix on the inner display I was unable to close the video despite hitting the X on the screen several times. It never worked. I had to swipe up to force close the app.

Then just now I was using the cover screen display and all of a sudden the left to right swipes didn’t work. I couldn’t swipe on the Home Screen to go to another panel, open a folder and swipe to more apps or even swipe to power off the phone. I had to do a a hard restart and then once it powered back on everything is working. Guessing this is a software bug more then a hardware since it seems to fix with a restart.

Anyone else running into this issue? I just submitted a ticket to Apple but doubt I will get a reply since it’s not a ticket.

Thanks!

Discussion Upgrading, and want to transfer individual files manually

I’ve always just transferred the entirety of my old phone to the new one, but this is enabling my ADHD induced disorganized file hoard.

Would it be straight forward to manually sort and transfer files?

Is there anything I should make sure gets transferred- like files that pertain to specific apps, the operating system, etc?

Should I dump everything onto a computer, sort, then dump onto the new phone?

Discussion Any chance we’ll get more functionality out of the Action Button? (Tap, double tap…)

As it stands, the action button only activates when held but it would be far more useful if we could also press and double tap for different actions. Is that something that Apple can unlock later via software or is it hardcoded that way? I could only imagine if the action button existed in the jailbreak era we’d be able to tap, hold, double tap, triple tap, etc to activate something. I remember back in the day on my iPhone 5g I had my volume buttons setup where long press on volume up skipped to the next song and volume down was for previous song. Is no one at Apple considering more uses for the action button other than a long press to open shortcuts?

Support Voice memo transcript really bad

So I’ve today needed to record a voice memo of one of my courses at my university. My first language is not English so my phone settings aren’t in English either.

When I last recorded another lecture which was in my first language the transcript was spot on even though the quality of the recording wasn’t good due to my seat in the room and acoustics.
Today however the English recording transcript was complete garbage even though the recording itself is clear. It mixed both languages together, created words that exist in neither languages which makes is pretty useless to further work with.

Does anyone know why this could be the case? I’ve activated English and German keyboard options and spell checks. Is there an option I need to select so it recognizes English language when creating transcripts?

I’m grateful for any input! Thanks
