Advice ECE Secondary Focus recommendations for CPE Machine Learning option?

I’m a Computer Engineering major at Virginia Tech doing the Machine Learning option, and I’m trying to figure out which ECE classes I should take for my Secondary Focus.

From what I understand, I need 3 ECE courses (9 credits) at the 3000/4000/5000 level, with at least one 4000-level course.

By Spring 2027, I’ll have completed or be taking:

  • ECE 2214
  • ECE 2544
  • ECE 2564
  • ECE 2714
  • ECE 2804
  • ECE 3504
  • ECE 3514
  • STAT 4714
  • ECE 3574 (SP27)
  • ECE 4524 (SP27)
  • ECE 4424 (SP27)

I’m planning on taking two Secondary Focus electives in Spring 2027 and the third in Fall 2027.

For people who have taken upper-level ECE electives, what classes would you recommend?

I’m mainly interested in software, computer systems, embedded, networking, or cybersecurity, but I’m open to anything useful. I’d especially appreciate opinions on:

  • Difficulty/workload
  • How good the professor/class was
  • How much coding/project work there is
  • How useful the class is for internships/jobs
  • Any classes you would avoid

I’m trying to graduate Spring 2028, so prerequisite chains also matter.

Thanks!

Academics Don't want to take another math class, have to take another math class. Any recommendations?

• Upvotes

I am an Electrical Engineering major graduating in the spring 2027. Have a final elective math credit to fulfill and just want to focus on my capstone and ECE classes and do as little math as possible. Only math I loved was Diff Eq and I despised Calc 3.

Does anyone have any experiences with these math classes to tell me which one is going to let me have the most time to focus on my other classes?

Choices:
MATH 2534 - Introduction to Discrete Mathematics

MATH 3034 - Introduction to Proofs

MATH 3214 - Vector Calculus (Ew another calc 3)

MATH 3414 - Numerical Methods

MATH 4445 - Introduction to Numerical Analysis

MATH 4564 - Operational Methods for Engineers

MATH 4574 - Vector and Complex Analysis for Engineers

Events Show up to Blacksburg Town Council meeting today at 6:30 in protest of Flock and mass surveillance!

I’ve seen a lot of people around campus and on social media complaining about Flock, so I reached out to the group that got Flock removed from Christiansburg. This is bipartisan so whatever your political beliefs are, as long as you don’t think mass surveillance has a place here you’re welcome. Unity is our strength.
