Megathread Admissions Megathread - Class of 2031 Edition

It's that time of year once again!

Every year, we get thousands of posts and comments from prospective students about applications, many of whom have similar or identical stats. To keep this subreddit clean for current students, as we have done for 11 years now, all threads related to applications and other admissions-related topics will be redirected to this megathread.

Please search the existing comments for similar qualifications or post a comment of your own, or look at the previous admissions megathread for additional data. All admissions-related posts outside this thread will be removed.

If posting stats, please be sure to include the following:

  • Gender/ethnicity
  • Intended major
  • Admissions cycle (EA, RD, etc.)
  • Location (in-state/out-of-state/international)
  • GPA
  • Test scores
  • AP/IB/DE credits
  • Extra-curriculars
  • Community service, jobs, etc.

If you are a transfer applicant, please review the transfer roadmap for your major. The more courses completed, the higher your chances of getting accepted.

Please note that the majority of the contributors to this subreddit are past and present students, not admissions counselors or faculty members. As such, any advice given is unofficial and solely based on personal experience and historical data. You should contact the admissions office or talk to your guidance counselor for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

I applied as a spring 2027 transfer and I’m wondering what the average status of somebody that they admit is for transfers. Please include your major, GPA, and credits. Feel free to also let me know anything you think would be helpful.

General Question Spring Intramural Tennis/Pickleball

Hey,

So I've been playing tennis for a couple of months and I'm getting better each time I play. I know that obviously the rec model for intramural isn't meant to be competitive but how good would you say people are? Also is it difficult to match with a partner if I'm applying as a free agent.

Academics What's Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) like here?

I'm considering switching from mechanical engineering to ISE. I've been struggling with some of the ME courses, and after talking with my friend in ISE, I think it might be a better fit for me. However, I also want to hear about the experiences of others in the major, so anything helps!

I'm really interested in hearing about internship opportunities and employment after graduation though. As a general note, I'm involved in various engineering design teams here, and I plan on sticking with them throughout my time at VT.

Academics I am so tired of AI in higher education.

I am a Junior at Virginia Tech and I am so tired of AI in higher education. This post might be a bit hypocritical because I do utilize AI nearly every day but at the same time what else am I supposed to do. My goal at the end of the day is to get a job and if AI can help me with that/everyone else including my competition is using it why would I nerf myself.

At the same time it is just disappointing how much AI has flipped higher education on its head. It feels like every class/assignment AI is being utilized and my teachers can't shut the fuck up about how great and powerful of a tool it is.

The students are using AI for their work and the teachers are grading that AI work using AI, it is just so surreal. AI is grading itself in so many cases

I think this is definitely exacerbated by the fact that I study Business Information Technology which is literally just an AI slop major at this point but I bet this is true of other majors as well.

To make things even worse every job interview I have they want to talk about "how have you implemented AI into your life" like jesus christ man

Next semester I am loading up on non major specific classes like philosophy and arts because I just can't stand it anymore.

General Question Good Hiking or Outdoor Trails

Hi! I’m planning a date for my bf and I and I want to do something outdoors since he’s a big fan of that environment. I’m not big on hiking so I wanted to ask for recommendations on some hiking trails that are scenic but aren’t too rigorous for a newbie like me. Also it would be if it had a nice place to sit and have like a mini picnic or small lunch

Academics I made a free OCHEM 1 study tool to help fellow OCHEM 1 victims

Hey everyone! I don't know if this counts as an ad so it may get taken down, but I am a senior at VT and made an OCHEM 1 study tool/website where you can do infinite practice problems of nomenclature of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, amines, rings, chairs, drawing questions, reactions, etc. in a gamified way. You can compete with your friends for the leaderboard and do 1v1 knockout rounds to climb the ranks. It's completely free with no ads or anything, I just wanted to make a study tool to help people because honestly this class has been kicking my butt.

Any and all feedback is appreciated! Please let me know what you think!

Academics How difficult is BMES 3184??

Hi everyone!

I'm planning my schedule for next semester and was wondering how difficult BMES 3184 is. Does the course have exams, or is it mostly assignments and projects? How heavy is the workload?

I'm also planning to take Dynamics (ESM 2304) and Deforms (ESM 2204) alongside BMES 3184. For anyone who's taken these courses, do you think this combination is manageable, or would it be too much for one semester?

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks!!

General Question Search for weiner dog

My gf like really wants a weiner dog (dachshund). She would take wonderful care of it, I have a dog now and multiple times she’s helped me out in taking care of my dog for the day or something like that. We couldn’t find anything in local shelters and she’d rather not go to a breeder place. Please let me know!

Events Vintage Market - Flea Market - Giganto Yard Sale at the Downtown Farmer's Market Today (Sunday Oct 25)

The weather looks good for today's (Sunday Oct 25) Vintage Market at the Farmer's Market. We've had more cancellations due to rain this year than ever before, so catch this one while it's still nice out. The Vintage Market meets every other Sunday at the Farmer's Market at 108 W. Roanoke St, the corner of Roanoke and Draper by the downtown 7-11 (behind Champs and the Boardwalk) from 10-5, featuring dozens of vendors, live music, arts, crafts, vintage clothing, vinyl records, and for you plant lovers I'll even be bringing my champion Monstera and some other tropical houseplants that have been thriving in front of John's Cameras all summer, as I don't have room for them inside over the winter. Hope to see you there and tell a friend!

Academics Admitted to MS in ECE for Spring 2027 – Looking to Connect with Current Graduate Students!

Hi everyone!
I’ve recently received my admit decision for the MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) program for Spring 2027 and would love to connect with current graduate students.

I’m particularly interested in learning more about the coursework, overall student experience, and opportunities for Research Assistantships (RA), Teaching Assistantships (TA), and Grader positions.

If you’re currently pursuing your graduate studies in ECE, I’d really appreciate the opportunity to connect, ask a few questions, and learn from your experience.
Looking forward to connecting with you all. Thanks in advance! 😊

General Question Looking for new friends!

Hi! I’m a 23F grad student looking to meet some new people around here!
I enjoy playing pickleball, swimming, going on walks, grabbing drinks, and playing board games. I’m honestly not very good at most of these things lol😳, I just enjoy doing them for fun!
I’d love to find some people to hang out with, try new activities, or just explore the area together!

Just to clarify, I’m mainly hoping to meet people around my age! Undergrads and grad students are both welcome. It’d be great to find people with similar interests to hang out and do fun things together!

Feel free to DM me or leave a comment if you’re interested! :)
