Hi all, I draw illustrations of closed college-town hangouts: the booth, the sign, the street out front. I'd like to do that for UT, and I need the people who were there to tell me what to draw. I haven't drawn anything for Austin yet, and nothing here is for sale.
A few I've started with (years are from news and local history, so correct me if I'm off):
- Les Amis Cafe, 24th & Nueces (coffee and people-watching, to 1997)
- Liberty Lunch (open-air club, to 1999)
- Nau's, 24th & San Gabriel (soda fountain and burgers, to 2007)
- Players, MLK & Guadalupe (burgers and a bar, to 2014)
- Milto's, Guadalupe (gyros and pizza, to 2019)
- Spider House Café, Fruth St (coffee house and bar, to 2020)
What would help most:
1. Which closed spot is missing from that list? Bars most of all, but also delis, record stores, pizza, anything from your UT years that you still talk about.
2. What do you remember? The order, the booth, the band, the sign, the night. One detail is plenty.
3. If you have an old photo of the place, I'd love to see it. I'd only use it as a reference to redraw from scratch, never copy it, and only with your OK.
What did I miss?
Full disclosure: this is my small business, Lost Hangouts. I turn these places into tribute t-shirts, but that's the last step. First I want the drawings and the memories right. No links here. If a mod thinks this breaks the sub's commercial-post rule, I'll take it down, and I'm happy to move it to a different thread.
