Loser: Anyone sleeping on Eric Izoita

What, you didn’t expect us to spend a sixth of this column on a teenager who’s played less than 300 minutes this season for a team that’s probably not going to make the playoffs? You don’t know Backheeled at all, do you…

On a serious note, if you’ve been sleeping on Eric Izoita (or if you don’t know who he is), it’s time to change that. The 19-year-old central midfielder signed a homegrown deal with the Portland Timbers just last month. That fact alone makes Izoita notable simply because the Timbers have done very, very little to develop young players and move them through to the first team in their 16 years as a club. Marco Farfan became Portland’s first-ever academy-developed homegrown player when the outside back signed a first team deal in 2016. Since then, they’ve signed just seven homegrowns. The only one who’s really contributed? Eryk Williamson, a homegrown by the letter of the law only and who wasn’t from the Pacific Northwest.

So Izoita, who started in the Timbers academy at age 10, is in rare company.

When you watch Izoita, it’s clear why he’s been entrusted by Marti Cifuentes to start crucial games as Portland desperately try to claw their way above the playoff line out West — they’re currently 11th. In short, the teenager is a savvy possession player. Playing as the right-sided free No. 8 in Cifuentes’ 4-3-3 setup, Izoita helped Portland run rampant over Charlotte FC in a 3-2 win on Saturday by notching two assists. You can see Izoita’s high soccer IQ on both plays. On the first, he finds a pocket of space off the ball to free himself up to put the ball on a platter:

On the second, he sees space in behind and squeezes a ball through a tight window:

Now, if you think that Izoita’s ball on his second assist leaves quite a bit of work for Ariel Lassiter to do, I think you’re right. Still, both of Izoita’s assists came with his weaker right foot. His shots and his long balls since graduating to the first team tend to come with his stronger left. So, then, not only is the 19-year-old a clever mover off the ball and a surveyor and a quick thinker on it but he’s also two-footed. Though he doesn’t have a ton of burst, he does have a good frame and is willing to cover ground.

Izoita is a player, one who I expect will be a regular starter for as long as he’s in Portland. With club legend Diego Chara potentially calling time on his Timbers career, a changing of the guard is on the way. - Joe Lowery
