🐧Linux I reverse-engineered the Pimax Windows service for Unix-based systems, specifically focusing on Omarchy's

So, I have full control over all inputs coming from the headset, and I already have a full application working on Unix/Linux systems (specifically for the Dream Air SLAM for now).

What I currently have access to and working: • All IPD, brightness, and lens adjustments • Full controller input • Camera access • Eye tracking control • Native SteamVR integration • A custom pass-through desktop app that stays fixed in space and supports AI commands

Technical details: I had to patch the latest NVIDIA drivers and work with Monado.

There is still a lot to do, especially regarding support for other devices, but it has a ton of potential. If there's enough interest, I'll open-source it and share the GitHub repo.

What do you guys think? Would anyone want access to this?

UPDATE:

I’m almost finishing the final steps and integrations so everyone can contribute—automating testing and setting up a way for everyone to use Claude, Codex, or whatever text LLM on their machine to submit a PR for compatibility with all headsets.

There’s still a lot to do, but I find this really exciting: we have access to all eye-tracking data, can implement our own foveated rendering, and have full control over tracking. I also implemented a local AI (WhisperVR workspace) so you can work right in there—along with many other features.

This Saturday, I’ll have it ready for everyone! Thanks for your patience.

UPDATE2:

https://github.com/laughtt/omarchyvr

So here it is—the public repo! There is still a lot to cook and a lot to work on, but I wanted to address a couple of questions and answers for everyone.

I originally wanted to finish this project completely and share it once it was 100% ready, but I realized there is just so much to do, and getting more developers involved will make progress much faster. I could really use help with:

  • Supporting additional VR headsets
  • Improving controller/remote tracking support
  • Room synchronization and spatial setup
  • Further refining the experimental SteamVR implementation

Currently, I use Monado and Ryze. My approach was to think through each feature, get it to a good-enough state, and then move on to the next.

Project Background

For context, I started this project just 5 days ago. I have extensive experience as a software engineer with a background in C and low-level languages, so I had a good idea of how to approach it. I didn't use any reverse-engineering tools or Pimax binary executables—I felt that was the wrong approach. Instead, I analyzed the cable signal specifications, ran tests, deciphered data with Claude, and iterated continuously.

From there, I routed all commands to Omarchy, patched the display issues, handled the driver pathways for NVIDIA, and forked Monado and Ryze to resolve some specific disconnects and quirks unique to this headset. On my machine, it's pretty stable once fully configured.

Raw Telemetry & Inputs Collected

Here is a breakdown of the raw data streams we are currently reading from the hardware:

Input Where it comes from Rate Primary Use Case
IMU (gyro + accelerometer) Headset USB (own stream) 500 Hz Head tracking, "headset lying still" detection, auto mode
4 Tracking Cameras (infrared) Separate USB camera device 60 fps 6DoF head tracking, controller tracking, camera hands, passthrough
Controller Reports (sticks, trigger, grip, buttons, touch, battery) Headset USB (via headset radio) Active connection stream In-game / Work input, "picked up" detection
Controller Heartbeat (awake, battery, firmware) Headset command channel Every 2s per controller Pairing status & app battery level
Eye Tracker Own USB device ~119 Hz Gaze point in Work mode
Microphone USB audio 48 kHz stereo Voice commands & recording
Headset Info Report Reply on command channel On demand Lens IPD readback, headset state

Note on Unused Telemetry:

  • A controller touch bit (believed to be a proximity sensor, unverified).
  • A "visor status" query that may indicate whether the headset is currently being worn.
  • Both are visible in Windows packet captures but are not yet implemented in our codebase.Ā

Why Omarchy?

The primary reason I built this on Omarchy was to create an optimal AI-driven work environment with Claude or any local model —where you can speak, windows pop up, and you can interact with up to 6 floating screens using voice commands. It's a really compelling setup and I enjoy using it a lot. Omarchy is really good on this as is deeply integrated with LLM.

Current State & Performance

I’ve also managed to play Dungeons and Half-Life 2 in it. The tracking isn't perfect yet since we need deeper integration—right now, we are relying on raw data directly from the headset. The room setup and eye-tracking integration also currently run on raw telemetry.

If you find this project interesting and want to contribute, you are very welcome to jump in! Please note: this is strictly aimed at developers right now, not end-users or consumers, as the tracking isn't quite game-ready yet. That said, frame rates are higher and efficiency seems significantly better in this environment.

Future Vision & Community Goals

I'm not sure if there are other VR projects with this specific depth of integration, but tinkering with this stack has been incredibly fun. There is huge potential for improvement here, and I'm confident that with the community's help, we can make this hardware shine to its full potential.

Leveraging AI in this workflow has changed the game—a good engineer can move 100x faster. What typically would have taken months took just days, and being able to hand this project off to everyone in such a functional state is deeply rewarding.

Looking ahead, the goal is to expand this ecosystem to support a much broader range of hardware, including the Meta Quest 3 and other popular headsets. If we can build a fully optimized, open-source stack that works seamlessly across all devices, it will be a massive win for everyone.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them! Thanks for everything!

Discussion My new Pimax Dream Air SLAM has just been delivered....

I posted here a while ago about Pimax bricking my OG crystal after participating in their beta program. Originally they only offered a $300 voucher but after posting here, Jaapgrolleman came to the rescue and sorted it out for me! He basically sorted me out with a much larger credit (1900aud)

Just had notification that my new Dream Air has been delivered...looking forward to trying it out when I get home from work.

I now hand my unit to the Pimax Gods to see if I have a fault free unit.....

Question Kharvox Doom 2016 VR launcher is rebooting my PC

Pimax Dream Air, Win 11/i9/32gb 5090. I've been happily playing the Doom 2016 VR mod by Kharvox for over a week now using the Sboys3 driver (which looks great). I was close to finishing the campaign last nigt, but when I tried to fire it up today the VR demons struck with a vengeance: for some reason, trying to launch the game hard reboots my PC (not a CTD, a complete reboot). I validated the Doom 2016 game files in Steam and made sure that I could still launch the game in flat mode...all good there. Opened the in-game settings in flat mode and dialed down the graphics just in case, no joy. Made sure I could run my other games from sboys3/SteamVR still (Cyberpunk 2077 LR, HLA, etc.), all good...it's just Kharvox. Reinstalled the Kharvox launcher and Sboys3, still reboots. Finally, I tried running the game without Sboys3 by running SteamVR directly from Pimax EVO, nope.

The only other change I made was updating the nVidia driver this morning, which would seem to be the likely culprit just due to process of elimination...except I've never seen this behavior before after many driver updates. I would consider trying to roll back anyway but I'd rather not without some independent confirmation that this would make a difference, which is why I'm posting here (I'd rather not get behind on driver updates, as it could cause issues with other games). Suggestions are welcome, thanks!

Resolved Eye tracking calibration crashes every time I launch it

When I am setting up my Dream Air, I'm seeing a bunch of pulsing, pixellated areas of the screen, and these areas move around depending on where I am looking. When I try to calibrate the eye tracking in the Pimax Play app, the screen goes dark, I see the Unity logo, and then the app hangs with a blank, black screen. I cannot see anything, and I have to use Task Manager to kill the Pimax app manually, and then relaunch Play. This is occurring on Windows 10 Pro.

Is this a known issue? Are there any steps to address this? Am I missing something entirely? FWIW, I received no errors or anything indicating a problem when installing Pimax Play.

[edit: More info] I have "plano" lenses (meaning, no Rx correction) from HonsVR fitted, to protect the stock Pimax lenses. Calibration crashes on launch, with or without the HonsVR lenses fitted, so I don't think this is a factor but still FYI.

Question First 12 hours with the Pimax Dream Air.

Background: I am coming from a Quest 3 and bought the Dream Air as a headset exclusively for simracing (iracing). This is my first DP headset.

The Good: The visuals are incredible. The colours are so vivid and the image is really crisp. It is a very significant step up from the Quest 3.

The issues: There are a few unfortunately....

1) I am getting burryness/glare(?) towards the bottom of my visual field. This is mostly visible in the loading screens or in the Pimax Home screen. For example when there is that blue/turquoise round planet thing in Pimax Home, I get a narrow greenish elliptical blurry band towards the bottom and outer bottom of the visual field on both sides. Within iRacing it is less visible but it is still there.

2) From time to time, maybe once every 8 minutes I get a narrow column shaped band of pixels/artifacts flash quickly on one side of the screen. It lasts only a split second. It doesn't really bother me visually but I am worried it may be an early sign of something faulty within the headset.

3) The sweet spot/eye tracking. Maybe the Quest 3 spoiled me, but the outer most sides of the visual field on the Dream Air are really blurry/low resolution. In Simracing the peripheral visual field would be populated with information boxes about lap times etc and with the Quest 3 I can see them clearly, however with the Pimax Dream Air I need to move my whole head to see them. It seems that the eye tracking is not working properly. I cannot understand.

4) Comfort: I read about all the issues and confirm. I have a bigger than average head and the whole thing feels small and uncomfortable. I know that this can be fixed but I am hesitant in throwing more money into this if I cannot fix the above issues, especially (1) and (3)

Things I tried:

A) Trying to disable eye tracking within Pimax Play......but it didn't seem to make a difference to (3)

B) Switched off quad views in Pimax Play whilst running iracing in foveated mode with eye tracking on. But (3) is still an issue

C) Carefully cleaning the lenses.....did not do anything vis a vis (1) . Lenses do not seem dirty.

Any ideas? I would love to keep the headset because it is obvious that the raw image quality is REALLY good. However the issues I listed, especially (3), are really a deal breaker for me and as things stand I am leaning towards returning the headset.

Any input? Any ideas on fixing the issues?

Discussion What Pimax Play (Evo) Settings Are You Using for the Best Balance Between Image Quality and Performance on the Dream Air?

Im am especially interested from users with either RTX 5080, 4090 or 5090 who use the Dream Air for iRacing (and/or MSFS 2024). I'm aiming for a stable 90 FPS, as 72 FPS unfortunately just doesn't feel smooth enough to me.

Relevant items could be:

  1. Which slider value do you use in the Pimax Software? 1.0, below or even above 1.0? Do you use the Pimax Play Evo Software or Sboys3 driver to achieve it?

  2. Do you crop the FOV? Vertically or even a bit horizontally?

  3. Any special advice for in game graphic settings?

I would like find a good sweet spot. Of course the sweet spot varies from person to person.

Thanks a lot.

Discussion VectorXR frame gen with Star Citizen VR

I've been testing frame gen on my Dream Air (i9/13gen/32gb RTX 5090), primarily with Star Citizen VR and MSFS 2024. I tried out the latest versions of OFXR Bridge and VectorXR, here's a summary.

OFXR Bridge - easier to set up and use as it's just a small system tray utility. Seemed to work well with MSFS 2024 on (2x frame gen), was able to get 90fps or close with DLSS Quality and in-game settings cranked up. Visuals were mostly pretty smooth, although I still saw some stutter and artifacting in high-detail areas and in steep turns. Although the latest version is signed and supposed to work with EAC anti-cheat, I still couldn't get it to work with SC VR.

VectorXR - this utility has a bigger footprint and more options and functionality than OFXR Bridge. The quality of the UI and supporting user guide/doc is among the best I've ever seen for an app of this type, quite frankly I'm amazed that it's free...I'd both expect and be willing to pay for a utility of this high quality. VectorXR worked as well or better than OFXR Bridge in MSFS 2024 in most areas, however like OFXR I still had some stutter and artifacting in high-detail areas, particularly high-rise building windows. I was happy to see that VectorXR works with SC VR, although not flawlessly: there was a lot of artifacting with the default Dynamic Interpolation setting (you could really see it on the ASOP terminals). I was able to reduce this a lot by switching to the Extrapolation setting, although not completely.

Conclusion - of the two, VectorXR seems to have the most upside due to its high quality and wealth of functionality (and it works with SC VR). I think both frame gen utilities have potential, and will be keeping an eye for new releases. However, at this point IMHO you can get better visuals and performance in both these games by dialing down the in-game settings and resolution (I generally go with 0.8 render resolution on the Pimax and DLSS Balanced in-game) and skipping frame gen for now.

If anyone has been getting good results with frame gen on either of these games (particularly SC), please share...I'm really interested in frame gen, and I believe this tech potentially has more upside than dynamic foveated rendering for improving VR gaming performance in high-res headsets (DFR has been a bit of a disappointment so far IMHO, but that's another story for another post).

Tech Support Pimax crystal light headset resolution stuck

No matter what resolution render scale I set in pimax play, the resolution reported by the headset is 2498 x 2900. Steamvr reports the same render resolution. the runtime is Pimax XR.

things I've tried: removed openxr tool kit and registry values, deleted runtime folder in the pimax local app

Request Pimax EVO feature suggestion - motion compensation vibration filtering

I have a DOF reality H3 motion chair with a Buttkicker bass shaker attached. I've tried using a Vive tracker as the motion compensation tracking device, however the device picks up high frequency vibrations from the buttkicker despite all of my efforts to physically isolate it with foam. It's a shame because the Vive tracker tracking is far superior to the Witmotion accelerometer solution, which requires accurately placing the virtual center of rotation in space... Is there a way to add a filter to the Pimax EVO software specifically for the Motion Compensation device?

My current working solution is to use the Witmotion via the BuzzteeBear OpenXR Motion Compensation API Layer, which includes a vibration filter. Unfortunately, it's not possible to use the Vive tracker with this layer + vibration filtering in combination with the Pimax OpenXR runtime.

Question My PCS 50PPD OG has blown out colors, what can I do?

So, I haven't contacted tech support yet because I want to know what my options are and if it comes to that point, what I should specifically plan on saying...

I have a Pimax Crystal Super with the original 50 PPD optical engine and overall everything is fine EXCEPT for the semi-common blown out colors issue. To put it simply, it kind of looks like a monitor that is using the wrong color space, certain colors are very blown out on default settings and the whole thing seems a bit too bright (with pretty bad mura I think related to it).

I have tried adjusting the brightness and contrast and have gotten tolerable results but it's clear that by doing so, I "moved" the problem to other parts of the color space.

What can I or should I do? Overall I'm having a great time, I just remember owning the Pimax Crystal OG which had perfect colors and almost no noticeable mura and feel like my PCS could be EVEN BETTER if it more closely matched that part of the Crystal OG experience.

Tech Support DOA Crystal Super Ultrawide

I got a crystal Super Ultrawide last week to play DCS. Had previously used a Quest Pro. It worked for a total of about 10 hours then stopped. No LEDs, no cable to engine reseating solved it. Do the power supplies on this die easily? I'm in two minds about a refund as opposed to a replacement. Incredibly disappointed.

Discussion 9 days with my Dream Air

0 hours of gameplay enjoyed, because I can't get the displays to stay on longer than a handful of seconds without cutting out.

And 5 days since my support ticket last saw a reply.

Soon I'll have no choice but to return and refund. Very disappointing.

Anyone else start off with a less-than-stellar experience like this? Was it worth sticking it out and working with support to get the issues resolved? Or was it more headache than it was worth?

I hope yalls experiences have been better than mine.

e: To their credit, they've since offered a replacement unit.
