Question Neighbours smoking at my front door
I live in the basement of a house, with tenants (not landlord) in the floor above me. The neighbours literally set up chairs right at my front door (they have their own entrance into their home), and proceed to chain smoke cigarettes and weed from 8am until almost midnight, every single day.
I've asked them to smoke away from my front door. I've asked the landlord to tell them to smoke away from my front door. But it continues, day after day. I literally can't open my front door without getting blasted with tobacco and weed.
What can I do about this? Do I have any options?

Question Parking vs GO train for TD Coliseum?
Coming in for Buffalo for a concert, was thinking I would park at the Burlington go station and take the train in… but another post made it seem like there is parking everywhere around the coliseum. Is that correct? What’s the better option? Can you get out quickly after the concert? Also, do those parking lots take tap, since I won’t have Canadian currency?

Question Second sewage backup in basement after building trap not removed - can I hold the plumbing company responsible?
I own an 80 year old home and am looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with sewage backups, plumbing contractors, or Hamilton’s Protective Plumbing Program.
I’ve now had two sewage backups in my basement, and I’m trying to figure out who is responsible, what my options are, and how to avoid being left with thousands of dollars in costs and potentially higher insurance premiums.
The situation:
I had a sewage back up last year and put in an insurance claim. I was advised to install a backflow valve and to remove the building trap. I chose an approved plumber through the city’s Protective Plumbing Program and discussed the plan. The paperwork listed removal of the existing building trap as work to be completed, however, that work was not done - they only installed the backflow valve. They also inspected the rest of the line with a camera and did not find any major obstructions, as far as I know. I submitted all this paperwork (including the cd with the camera footage) to the city for reimbursement. The contractors then came in and completed the reno, including new flooring, drywall, trim and paint. I thought it was all behind me.
Unfortunately, I experienced another sewage backup a month ago. I contacted the City’s Sewer Lateral Management Program and had another plumbing company inspect the situation. Their report indicated that the pipe was obstructed/flooded and that they suspected the existing building trap might still be in place. They were unable to get their equipment more than approximately five feet downstream from the backwater valve area. They recommended interior excavation, removal of the suspected trap, clearing the obstruction and further investigation. This work is quoted at more than $3000. This plumber told me verbally that the building trap was the cause of the problem although I plan to investigate further again.
My questions:
Can I hold the company that didn’t remove the trap responsible? They were a City-approved contractor, and their paperwork listed the building-trap removal as work to be completed, but they left it in place. Can I hold them responsible? What evidence would I need to establish that their incomplete work contributed to the second backup? Should I start with a formal written complaint to the company, the City, or both?
What is the best way to pursue this? Is there a complaint process through the City of Hamilton’s Protective Plumbing Program, a plumbing regulator, or another organization? Would a lawyer be worthwhile, particularly if the cost of repairs is substantial?
Could the City share any responsibility? Does the City have any responsibility for the contractor’s work, or is that strictly between the contractor and me?
How can I minimize the impact on my insurance? I’m concerned about premium increases or other consequences of having multiple sewage-backup claims. Is there anything I should know before deciding how to proceed with the claim, particularly if I pursue the contractor separately? I don’t want to make a decision that leaves me worse off financially.
What should I do before authorizing expensive plumbing work? I want to establish the actual cause of the backup and avoid paying for unnecessary excavation or pipe replacement. Should I request the camera footage that has been submitted to the city?
Has anyone dealt with a similar situation in Ontario? What happened? How did it go?
I’d very much like to avoid a complicated legal process and am not looking to jump straight into a lawsuit, if at all. I want to understand my options and figure out how to get this resolved without being stuck paying for someone else’s negligence.
Thanks for any advice!
