Really enjoyed watching this (by YouTuber ShowMeTheMeaning). Great way to relive the magic of In the Pale Moonlight, and definitely made me want to rewatch the whole episode, and season six!!

Odo & Kira disappointment

Am I the only who’s disappointed about Odo leaving Kira (love of his life) to join his people? I always thought him realizing he spent so much time among humans that he really cares for them will top his disire to be with his people. Especially seeing the Dominion war😩

Time’s Orphan is the most egregious thing I’ve ever seen on TV

Some backstory about me. Growing up, I never really watched Star Trek. I have been watching various Star Trek shows now, as a man in my late 30s. I am the father to one. A sweet boy, age 6 – who is nonverbal autistic. Being a special needs parent is the crux of why I completely hated this episode and view it as probably one of the most god-awful things I’ve ever had the displeasure of sitting through. There were just so many terrible choices and plot holes that made this story make no sense, and put Miles, Keiko, and the Federation in a terrible light. Let’s talk about it.

So, Molly falls into a time portal and is the sole humanoid trapped on planet Golana. Somehow, despite being only 8 years old, she manages to survive for a decade on her own before the portal is reopened and she is brought back. Now let’s remember that the universe of the show is a semi-utopian future where an entire planet is dedicated to pleasure via geoengineered weather (Risa), yet the O’Brien’s are given absolutely no family leave to deal with their crisis. Nope – get back to work, your feral daughter can deal. Maybe, help her on your lunch break?

They try their best, and even in their limited time with her in between their other duties, she is seen making measurable progress. She begins to remember what it’s like to be human. But sadly, it all goes awry when they are forced to take her out of the holo suite where they were helping her learn in an environment she was accustomed to. Mind you this is the same holo suite that Nog spends days in just a few episodes later, with no repercussions from other potential patrons. But for the O'Brien's, an hour is all you get!

Anyway, as soon as she leaves the suite, she is quickly overwhelmed by all the people around her, freaks out, tries to flee, and stabs someone. Now the O’Brien’s are faced with 2 choices – send their daughter to jail, or obey the federation and send her to an institution where she can be helped. Yes, the same allegedly benevolent organization that caused the situation in the first place by not granting O’Brien’s any family leave is now demanding accountability.

So we’ve seen that Molly can learn, and would likely be able to reintegrate back into society after a few years of intense therapy and intervention, but O’Brien’s can’t be bothered with all that noise. Instead, they decide to listen to the PTSD riddled Molly who just wants to be back on her wild planet Golana where we can assume if she’s lucky she’ll die alone at the ripe old age of 37 sans medical care or anyone to support her.

They take her back to the portal where she hops through and discovers that she isn’t on Golana 10 years later, rather only a few hours have passed as 8-year-old Molly is there crying.

At this point 18-year-old Molly is either suicidal, in the sense that she is mentally aware that if she sends the 8-year-old back through the portal she ceases to exist. Or she is too primitive cognitively to recognize the ramifications of sending her younger self back through. Whatever her tragic final mental state was, she sends her back, and her own life is swiftly ended as she vanishes.

Why I especially hated the episode: Let me tell you, raising a nonverbal autistic child can be INCREDIBLY challenging. Things that other children can get in days might take my son months or years to learn through careful instruction and repetition. However, it is also INCREDIBLY fulfilling once he does master it.

Which is why it was so hard for me to watch an episode where Molly was smart and resilient enough to survive solo on a planet for a decade, was clearly learning and remembering skills, but the O’Brien’s just could not be bothered / were not provided any resources to help her.

Instead, everything gets tied up in a neat little bow when feral Molly disappears, and their adorable 8-year-old is back.

In summation, Justice for feral Molly, and In a universe that has moved beyond money, Star Fleet couldn’t spare the expense.

Tom Paris Mutated was just a bonus, but I figure he fits because he would've blasted by DS9 during his Warp 10 flight.

I said what I said. And I meant what I said.
Rewatching DS9 (my first watch was only a few years ago). Nothing against Worf but Martok kicks ass.

DS9 is wonderful

Can I just say, I absolutely ADORE this show. I have binged watched it so many times.

It is not only the greatest Star Trek series. It is also great TV.

It is impossible to pick a top ten best episodes, because there are WAY more than 10. Even series 1 and 2, which I for some reason remembered as a bit shaky, have some great episodes.

How I would write Gowron's descent into madness.

So just wanna start by saying I adore the writing of Deep Space Nine especially it's final arc. But I always felt Gowron's motivations for almost sinking not only the Klingon Empire but the entire Alliance were somewhat dubious. He's crazy, spiteful, and vindictive but I don't believe Gowron would sacrifice brave Klingon warriors to satiate his ego and jealousy towards Martok. I think he would be more than content to go down in history as the acting Chancellor during a come from behind victory. Even if someone else is doing a bulk of the fighting and planning. It's kind of muniutia.

I would perhaps add an extra episode that shows Gowron and his envoy heading towards Deep Space Nine. They are ambushed by Jem Hadar, who destroy all of the ships except the one Gowron and his guard are on. Gowron single handidly slays about five Jem Hadar as deep down he is a true Klingon warrior, but the ship is falling down around him and he suffers severe brain damage between that and the combat. Because of Gowron's efforts his ship makes in time to meet a Starfleet escort. Video of his heroics makes it throghout the entire Empire, as many who once thought Gowron to be an empty suit now praise him. However he can no longer think clearly or rationally and begins to see himdelf as a warrior of destiny that the Empire needs to survive. He still views Martok as his right hand man but keeps sending him and countless Klingons into pointless and suicidal situations. He gets aggressive when confronted and refuses to step down as no one can force him to as head injuries are a touchy subject in Klingon culture. Worf, for the good of the Empire and the Alliance, challenges Gowron to a duel and see's slaying him as a mercy killing - allowing him to die as a warrior who's intentions were good but who's mind failed him through no fault of his own.

Weyoun and Art

Post image
313 Upvotes

Just watched a clip of Weyoun asking Kira her opinion of Ziyal's painting and confessing that his people have no sense of aesthetics. It delves into and reveals something deep about both the Vorta as a genetically engineered species who are aware of things outside their ability to understand, and of the Founders' contempt of solids, in that they would take a monkey like species and create a race from it but giving it only what they deem necessery to carry out their wishes.

But the most interesting thing is that Dukat and Weyoun are very much like office colleagues, to be intimate enough for Dukat to give his daughter's painting to Weyoun. I don't boast about my kids' achievements to every guy in the office, only to a select group of close colleagues.
