Discussion - J-Mod reply Truth and Reconciliation

Hey folks, Happy Friday and/or weekend!

Last week I shared some thoughts around how we can all create a more welcoming community, especially given that we're still looking forward to an influx of new players on December 2nd, but that was just a comment in a thread, in response to a one-off. It was also very much a "JMod weighs in" moment, whereas the beauty of community is that we all have a voice that should be able to be heard.

Today, I want us all to take the next step towards a kinder and better community. And I need your help.

We can all hope for something better, but the ability to make a positive change is truthfully within each and every one of us. All of us have agency. We can make choices and choose our reactions to circumstances. We can choose our words and our engagement carefully, even when difficult emotions arise. That's what I want everyone to focus on today.

It's fair to say that this community has undergone a series of collective hurts. Not just from Reignited, but from a number of instances over the years. We can ignore that hurt and continue as we have so far, or we can start to openly and properly talk about it.

We can speak to why we feel the way we do, and what others can do to help move us towards a kinder space.

Some of that may be things that we as JMods can do better. Some of it may be how members of the community interact with and treat each other. Since joining Jagex last December, I too have had many thoughts about things across the board, but today I don't want to make big statements. Today I want to just listen and chat with you. While I won't have answers to every topic, I may be able to provide some helpful context somewhere - and I will still be reading everything that flows through here.

It all needs to start with a conversation. With all of us listening and being curious.

With that said, I would like to open it up to each and every one of you (and yes, I mean you lurkers as well - if ever there was a time to get involved even nominally, this is it).

TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT

A few basic terms of engagement before we get started with contributing:

  1. Everyone comes in and leaves here with their dignity intact.
    • Respect is the highest virtue here. No one should be made to feel lesser just for having a diverging opinion.
  2. We have time.
    • You do not need to rush out an answer, there is no urgency. I'm not rushing off and will continue to monitor this thread over time. Take your time, compile your thoughts and we'd love to read them. Firing a hot take from the hip probably won't convey the nuance we're looking for today.
  3. We're not here to win arguments or convince other people to share our opinion.
    • The point of today is to create a shared understanding, not to champion a cause. Realistically, none of us are going to have our feelings swayed by someone else's opinion on the internet, especially taking confirmation bias into account.
  4. Stay Curious
    • If someone says something that you don't understand or agree with, try to dig deeper into understanding it, rather than rebutting it.
  5. Private and Throwaway accounts are fine.
    • Some folks will not be comfortable sharing their opinions publicly on their main handle, just as many people in real life are not comfortable to openly acknowledge their politics.
    • An individual's play- or comment history should not disqualify them from sharing their opinion, so long as it is well made, thoughtful and adheres to the ground-rules above.

The above notes are for this discussion today, the usual subreddit rules still apply as moderated by the volunteer team.

PROMPTS TO CONSIDER

  • What Perceptions do you have about RuneScape, its (in-game and social media) Community, Reignited, The Treasure Hunter MTX era, its sister and sub-communities or its very identity in gaming?
  • What Stigma do you feel you face from other individuals? How does it make you feel and do those feelings influence how you in turn engage back into this or other communities?

If you're feeling up for bonus prompts:

  • How do the above perceptions or stigmas influence the worries you may have? What are you concerned about that the perceptions/stigmas may mean or insinuate about yourself as a player, the community or the game?
  • What are you most hopeful about if we could address the above perceptions and stigmas?

Everyone is welcome to weigh in.
No matter whether you've been with us for 20 years, have just started new this week or have never played but are thinking about joining us in the months ahead, I'd love to hear from you.

Equally, I would also love to hear from you if you tend to spend a lot of time observing this community but are not actively playing RuneScape (perhaps you play another Jagex game or MMO). Or maybe you've wanted to join but have never felt entirely welcome? Please speak up today.

Please use Your Reddit Votes for Clarity, not for Point-Scoring

  • Please upvote posts that progress the discussion, even if you may have a differing opinion.
  • Please avoid downvoting posts just on the basis that you disagree with the points that the author raises, especially when it is a well-thought through post. If possible, consider avoiding downvoting altogether within this thread.
  • Give kindness and respect your upvotes and support - We don't need much more than that to start making a difference in each others lives.

The point of today is that we will all encounter opinions that we do not agree with. The aim is that we understand and respectfully engage with these opinions out of curiosity, not that we attempt to stamp them out.

A couple extra requests to help make your contributions more helpful:

  • Try to avoid generalizations.
    • Rather than saying "The X Community is Y", go for something along the lines of "when individuals in X Community Say Y, It makes me feel Z".
  • Be Kind
    • There are many ways of expressing an opinion - try to default to kindness rather than coldness.

What will any of this achieve?

Some of you may be wondering - what's the point?

Fundamental to moving forward in any direction in life is the ability to understand.

Firstly, understanding that others may not share the same opinion as yourself even if you share the same echo chamber.

Secondly, understanding why others feel the way they do.

Very often, our opinions of situations or people are coloured by our perception of them, and perceptions can be quite misleading. Learning more about the "why" can help us understand and speak to the real underlying cause, rather than the top-level response.

Sorry for the wall of text above, but this might be one of the most important discussions we have as a community, and I want to make sure we get it right.

With that said, thank you so much for reading this far - let's talk!

Discussion The periodic table of Runescape foods

Post image
• Upvotes

I am FINALLY re-organizing my huge food collection and i wanted to make something special so everybody could always see it.

I thought about doing a spreadsheet with all the items maybe descriptions and such, yet i am not sure on how to organize them so it looks pretty and easier on the eyes.

Currently its organized by how much they heal top to bottom, but we have so many classes i can only think this might be as hard to organize as a periodic table, there is sweets, fish, meat, quest items, event food, healing factors and many many more. HELP.

Appreciation As a relatively new player, the Road to Restoration has genuinely made me fall in love with the game

• Upvotes

I never post on reddit, literally ever, but I just want to take the occasion and say how much I've enjoyed playing this game.

For context, I'm not a veteran of RuneScape. I never played when I was a kid, and only got to know the franchise some years ago through YouTube/Twitch.

I've tried both osrs and rs3 many times, but I've always ended up burning out and quitting for different reasons.

I've enjoyed rs3 gameplay (skilling and combat), but when I was showered with treasure hunter keys and proteans in the past, I always lost motivation and just ended up quitting (yes I know you can play ironman to not have any mtx).

In the meantime, I like the dedication it takes to level up in osrs (at least on paper), but always end up burning out so fast due to the lack of QoL (compared to rs3) and the low xp per hour / very click intensive skilling.

With Leagues 2 and the removal of mtx, I have found a new love for the game and ended up coming back this summer. Since then, I've been hooked ! Like many people in this sub, I was bummed out with Reignited and couldn't find motivation to keep playing, but regained it when Jagex decided to scrap it.

I just want to say to the devs that the road to restoration has such a positive impact on new players like myself, and your care for the game really shows.

The 2027 roadmap + the arrival of plugins have made me even more excited for the future. I hope Jagex keeps up this direction. With enough time and care, I think that the game has more potential than ever.

Creative Plugin: Bank Preset Visualizer

Hi,

I suggested this to the ninja team QoL many many years ago, but nothing ever happened. I have later seen many others requesting such bank preset function. Now that plugins are here, I finally decided to make it myself.

Presenting: Bank Preset Visualizer!

See what each bank preset is for with one single glance. Instead of the generic numbers on the bank's preset buttons, Bank Preset Visualizer shows a skill icon, a boss, or a short name, based on the preset name you already picked in the ingame bank preset settings. You don't need to type anything to get started: If preset 1 is named "Herblore", its button shows the Herblore skill icon.

I have also added a custom preset interface, where you can add your own text or icons instead of the default icons i have chosen.

Would love some feedback if someone has any suggestions for improvements or other discussions.

Check out the plugin site on mod.io:  https://mod.io/g/runescape/m/bank-preset-visualizer#description

Appreciation RuneScape Beauty: The Cursed Warrior BGM

Post image
46 Upvotes

To any lurkers here wondering whether to play RS3, please do give it a try! Among other good things said recently about the game, the music rarely disappoints.

If you are a fan of some badass boss music, I’d highly recommend giving The Cursed Warrior a listen. This is the BGM during the fight against one of the Elder God Wars boss - Kerapac. The fight is also perfectly voice-acted.

Shoutout to the music team behind all the quality production!!!

Honourable mention: Icthlarin’s lament.

Which song would you recommend?

Suggestion Wyrm Grunting

June 29 2009 - 10-year-old Sophie Smith of Willaston, England, raised 567 worms during Britain's World Worm Charming Championship. This feat was completed with the skillful use of Worm Grunting. A stick. hammered into soil, and and saw lightly from the top, "charmed" 567 worms to her vicinity.

Lore, Planks, Saw, Hammer, and blueprint.

The Giant Mole - hunted to near extinction by 2006 - last of its kind, discovered residing in Falador. Having its population reduced so heavily, nothing kept the Wyrm Population in check, allowing these monolithic tubes of destruction to surface once again in in 2010 - evolving to the Lava Stryke Worm by 2015.

Since then, Slayer Masters have been sending their apprentices out to maintain the population. But some slayers (me) find it really annoying and tedious that Lava Wyrms tease them by waiting next to a battle nearly complete, and running away at at the most inconvenient time. Leading me to run longer than it take to kill a Wyrm, and ruining my -- erm -- their entire day.

Enter: the Wyrm Grunter. A simple stick and saw, or perhaps an advanced Mechanical tool operated by a Chinchompa on a Chinchompa Wheel. When placed in the ground at a Stryke Wyrm site, attracts the wyrms to the surround spaces. Slayers can then battle them one by one without running around for ages

2-D Drawing
In Game Rendering

This quality of life improvement is a change that likely nobody is asking for - but I would love so very much. I am not one to skip a task, or block on permanently - and would like to improve the Wyrming Experience.

Edit: To answer some of the questions noone has asked. The reason their are two is simple. My thinking is that users with invention between level 30 and 40 can make the wooden grunter with the saw. You would need to use this device for 10-15 seconds, in order to attract wyrms for 3 minutes.

The second version is a Mechanized option (level 90+ invention), it will work automatically with no interaction - Just place, and mechanized grunting ensues. it will use a mechanized chinchompa as it's method operate.
The machine will need to be powered either by the Chinchompas, or with divine charge. I like the idea of a visual of a Chinchompa running the wheel, but not sure it needs to actually be the resource. Technically, motors do exist in Gielenor, and the Chinchompa is not needed. But without the visual of a chinchompa running, it is just a boring and loud invention. An in lore explanation could be that a motor counteracts vibrations created by the grunter, but the silence of the Chinchompa wheel allows the grunting to work.

Discussion Making the low to Mid tier More challenging

I have really been enjoying watching some people like Faux streaming recently, great to see and encourage others to join.

There have been a few times such as in the cave during the waterfall quest where you are running past the fire giants which you would be a challenge / scary. You might think you may need to come with food or an emergency tele but alas no. The giants are not aggressive and this happens in quite a few places. Often randomly above ground in the wider map.

I know they are looking at reorganising the quest line and early game soon. It would be interesting to add at least some trepidation rather then it being a little anti climatic knowing you can just walk past many NPCs.

What do people think?

I remember coming back to the game years ago and feeling ignored by higher-level players when I tried to talk or ask for help. A little friendliness would’ve gone a long way.

Nobody’s obligated to chat or help, of course. This is just a gentle reminder to be kind.

Ninja Request POH Default Skybox

Could we be able to set a default skybox for all who enter our POH? The Gothic style thrives in darkness with lanterns lighting the way, but loses all effectiveness when the sun is the default.

P.S. POH Dungeon return when?

Suggestion Bring back Wildywyrm as the games first Slayer Boss.

Ultimate slayer grind is getting really boring doing lava strykewyrms for eternity. Having the Wildywyrm back as a slayer boss that's only killable on task would make things more diverse and interesting.

It would probably need its health pool decreasing or its drop table increasing to make it valuable to do as a slayer boss, but I think I'm onto something here.

Edit: I forgot that some bosses in the game already need a slayer level requirement to kill. Oops.

it's a fairly hungry style and still probably one of the more annoying bits about it, having it just generate 2-3% more per basic ability would be a minor but very welcome QOL especially given you literally only have three abilities that generate the stuff.

Question A few questions from a brand new player

First and foremost, I apologize if there is a new player / question thread that I am supposed to post this in instead. I looked at the pinned posts and I didn't see anything so I figured it should be fine if I make my own post.

I played the old runescape YEARS ago back when I was in middle school and I recently got the itch to play again a decade + later. With that being said, I familiaried myself with OSRS vs RS3 and what not and decided that I want to play RS3.

So currently I mainly just training magic(which I got to level 30) and I really want to focus on that when it comes to PvE. Is it okay if I "main" magic or is it suggested to train every single combat style?

Right now my money making is just selling the drops from the mobs I am training at. I know its not making me rich or anything but its covers the cost of getting food and buying the gear upgrades I need. Is this sustainable or do I get to a point where I need to do actual money making strats to continue to progress my gear.

Lastly, is there a guide for places on where to train and at what level? Right now I just went into those catacombs im lumbridge and have been kinda killing w.e I think I can kill quickly and not take too much damage from. I am assuming there are better spots.

One of the things I am excited for is getting buying a membership which I will probably do today after work. When I was a kid my mom would never let me get one and so im excited to see how much more of the world I can explore with it.

Any other tips are very much welcomed! Thank you!

Question Anyone have a chill clan I could join?

• Upvotes

Coming over from OSRS and over the last few days I have been having a lot of fun.

My only gripe is that no one will talk to me. Literally no one will talk to me. I run passed the PoF and say hello, nothing. I am doing the Halloween Event and try to say hi to people, nothing. I say hello at the World 2 GE, nothing.

It's been really discouraging honestly. I have genuinely been enjoying the game and I'm just trying to say hi and see what's up with other players.

So I'd love to join a chill clan to talk to some other people and be able to ask questions along my journey.
