[Achievement Unlocked!] This weekend at Galloping Ghost Arcade, I became the third person to clear the "Kill Screen" in BurgerTime!

TL;DR: I didn't get a world record but I did something amazing I wanted to brag about. Incoming rant otherwise (with no AI used!)

History time for the arcade game BurgerTime! As a note, I am a former Guinness World Record holder on the emulated version; I'm not the world's best any more, but boy do I have information!

So Level 28 was, for decades, considered the Kill Screen. The enemies move just too fast to control for any human being. This can be proven with some math; all scores before Bryan's score coming up were capped at 7.8 million, and the maximum points you can get off of the ingredients is 7.7 million; throw in bonus peppers, the occasional crushed enemy, and small bits here and there. My own personal best is 7,789,300 which also died at Level 28, and other high level players also have similar scores.

It wasn't until the mid 2000's that Bryan Wagner figured out how to group them (INCREDIBLY difficult), and found a bug; if you can survive long enough, the code actually breaks, and the enemies slow to a crawl! So what was once a 3-4 hour long game can now take even longer to do. He is the arcade world record holder at over 11 million points, and for him to get those additional 4 million points did take him a total of 24 hours of gameplay.

There is a gentleman in Japan who goes by "Vertex DAN" who has also done this, albeit never officially submitted to anywhere other than MARP. His score is over 10 million and ended at stage 39.

Every other high level player, myself included, ended at between 7.5 and 7.8 million at Level 28. No one else has cleared the level.

All that preamble aside, this weekend I went to Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield, Illinois and played my first "serious" game of BurgerTime in over a decade, focusing on collecting peppers instead of points, and just wanting to get a score of 2 million, recorded with GGA's equipment. Instead I kept pushing, and got to Level 28. I managed to group the enemies and survive to hit the glitch! I screwed up and accidentally killed the enemies, but it kept the glitch active, and I was able to survive through the level and made it to Level 29!

...Where I immediately died to another bug, which is a whole different rant.

EDIT: I originally said GGA was in Chicago, when it's in Brookfield Illinois. I just plugged in "Galloping Ghost Arcade" into my GPS and followed it, not paying attention to the city, and I made an assumption on that. My apologies!

[Discussion] Which old school RPG has your favorite party members?

Whether it’s because of their banter, their companion quests, their designs or their classes, which old school RPG party is your personal favorite? Ideally this is based on the combined strength of the entire cast and not just one or two standouts

[Story Time!] My first time getting into retro gaming, as an 18

here's the story, so... i was watching Pokémon and that remind me about what my dad is playing when he was a kid, and i searching for retro game shop, and yeah... i went into that place,

i only bought gameboy and Pokémon red, because i don't have much money (If I have more money that time, i could buy NES and Elevator Action lol)

when i get into home, i was so so so so excited to turn on gameboy for the first time, and the first thing i see is gibberish text, i was like... "what?? is this broken???" actually... i didn't remove the dust inside the card game lol

my first Pokémon that i choose is Charmander, now he's at level 29. everytime i get into school bus, i have to choose the seat to get the sunlight for my gameboy (of course, it always the right side lol), and when i'm arrived in school, everyone was looked at my gameboy, like they really want to play my game lol

Everytime i get a money from my parent, i just don't buy any vending machine, because I was targeting to buy NES and PlayStation1 (someday I don't buy a lunch to forced myself lol)

If you asked me what's make me like retro game? the answer is... it's like i'm simulating my dad's childhood and deep diving into history of technology, that's it

[Discussion] You might know the infamous Nintendo IP Philips CD-i games, but did you know that the reason why these games were a thing because Nintendo cancelled the CD add-on that was home to the complete versions of games like Secret of Mana and Super Mario All-Stars, and the contract required it if cancelled?

Nintendo had a choice, release the SNES CD add-on that was going to be home to the original, complete versions of many of the SNES's best titles, or cancel it and give Philips the license to use their IPs to make some of the worst official games featuring Nintendo IPs ever. Super Mario All-Stars was likely going to be the pack-in game for the SNES CD to justify its high initial price, and was going to drive up sales significantly, helping the add-on beat the Sega CD. The SNES CD would've had a 32-bit 21.47 MHz CPU, enabling Super FX-level 3D graphics. As a result, due to the expensive manufacturing costs of Super FX-chip cartridges, most Super FX games, especially third-party games, would've likely been moved to the SNES CD. The SNES CD would be a lot better than the Sega CD, and it's a shame that Nintendo thought cancelling it and licensing their IPs to Philips for terrible CD-i games was the better idea.

[Modding] We turned the new LEGO PlayStation into a working PS1

Post image
36 Upvotes

We’re the team behind BrickBoy (the LEGO Game Boy kit). When LEGO announced their PlayStation set, we started building a console to go inside it.

It plays on your TV over HDMI. You play your own original discs through an external CD-ROM reader, and it works with original PS1 controllers (via a USB adapter) and memory cards, or Bluetooth controllers.

This is the prototype. In the final version, everything is closed up, and a small speaker and vibration motor recreate the sound and feel of the CD drive spinning up on every boot.

Crash, played from our original disc, was the first thing we had to test.

[Question] Never played a classic pokemon game, what’s the best one to play?

• Upvotes

Hey guys, I’ve never really played a classic pokemon game and I’m kinda feeling in the mood to give one a shot.
I have played pokemon snap for the 64 and really enjoy it as a relaxing game, which is why I say I’ve never played a “classic” pokemon game

I have an analogue pocket and a 3ds so I’d say anything I can play on either of those is what I’d be looking for

But I don’t know where to start

What is the best pokemon game that give the classic turn based feel.

[Question] How many of you guys have played the original Zombi?

• Upvotes

Just curious because I was interested in getting into the game soon to see what Ubisoft’s first game was like as I have heard how the game was basically their debut in the gaming industry.

But I know about the game such as its gameplay mechanics as the game is so obscure that I couldn’t find a forum to discuss it, but again all I know is that it’s one of the first games made by Ubisoft.

I finally reached Megalopolis on Sim City for snes! I used my emulator because my original console and games are in storage. My brother and I used to play this for hours trying to get that damn mario statue 😂 we bought the snes and games with our combined paper route money. I still have that console as well as the sega gensis we bought together.

Yes he’s super jealous. Almost as jealous as the time I had a cooler slammer than him for our Pogs games

[Discussion] Essential Titles on More Obscure Systems

I was never allowed consoles until the Wii but, growing up in the 90s, I would hear all about the ”next-best-thing” consoles that were coming out. I had friends who had the N64 and the original PlayStation, but adverts on TV and in magazines always showed different consoles: the Saturn, Jaguar, the 3DO and others.

Since those days I’ve been able to pick up most of the games I would have had any interest in playing, but those alternative systems always intrigued me. What do you consider some of the essential titles on the non-Nintendo, non-Sony platforms? Either those exclusive to the system, or those best or just more at home there?

[Discussion] SkyRoads (1993) was pure muscle memory. Anyone else still remember the later roads?

Booting up SkyRoads on the family PC meant fiddling with fuel and oxygen and trying not to fall off a ramp you could barely see coming. The music still lives in my head. It felt impossible as a kid, and the later levels with the burning tiles and the speed strips still trip me up. Did anyone actually finish all the roads back then, or was there a level that stopped you cold?

[Question] Easy way to compare retro console mods.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Im starting to organize all my retro consoles around my modern TV. Im looking at modding most of them to USB C power and HDMI connection. The options for mods is huge. Is there a spreadsheet or something out there that compares existing mods for different retro consoles? The investigating each mod individually is taking forever and is complicated.

Here's a Pic of the start of my retro display.

[Recommendation] My fav retro strategy game. M.A.X. MECHANIZED ASSAULT & EXPLORATION

Post image
25 Upvotes

I wanted to STRONGLY recommend M.A.X. Mechanized Assult & Exploration.

It's a 30 year old DOS game (has a windows .exe github mod) but to this day there still isn't a strategy game that can quite do what this game does.

Over 50 land, sea, and air vehicles, each can be upgraded. Any unit can have tbeir armor, weapons, speed, cost, upgraded allowing for unlimited different strategies with each new game.

To win you have to build colony buildings to reach a determined score. Each turn that a colony building is active you get a point but if that colony building gets distroyed you lose all the points it accumulated.

Avoid M.A.X 2, the sequel was never completed. And I've never actually played the campaign, I play custom games or "hottest games". Meaning you and up to three other players take turns on a single PC or pass around a android phone (magicDosBox).

Available on Steam, GOG, and Epic. And there is a mod available that fixes most of the bugs

[Question] Looking for wireless NES controllers for PC.

I'm not sure bluetooth will support 2 controllers at once since two ps5 controllers already conflict on my laptop. So maybe 2.4ghz wireless with the receivers is best? Any suggestions for good wireless NES controllers for PC? Thanks.

PS: Worst case, I can buy "wired" if the controller is good enough and there are no better options.

[Discussion] What classic, highly-rated retro game do you respect, but personally find unplayable today?

For me, it's the early 3D titles, like GoldenEye 007, any of the classic Resident Evil games, etc. Historical importance is massive, yes. But the tank controls make it a chore for me to revisit now. What's yours?
