Recommendation Browser Recommendation Megathread - October 2026

There are constantly a zillion, repetitive "Which browser should I use?", "What browser should I use for [insert here]", "Which browser should I switch to?", "Browser X or Browser Y?", "What's your favorite browser?", "What do you think about browser X? and "What browser has feature X?" posts that are making things a mess here and making it annoying for subscribers to sort through and read other types of posts.

If you would like to keep the mess under control a little bit, instead of making a new post for questions like the above, ask in a comment in this thread instead. Then, one can choose to follow this thread if they want. Or, post in r/suggestabrowser.

Also, check out all the individual browser recommendation posts and make use of the search field for this subreddit before asking for a recommendation.

Introducing Bare 2.0 — A new identity, same philosophy!

Things are moving fast at Bare, and a huge part of that momentum comes from the r/browsers community! Your feedback, suggestions, and support have helped shape Bare into what it is today. A huge thanks to the moderators for letting us share our progress here. This community is a big part of why Bare even exists!

Downloads keep growing, feedback keeps coming in, and we're constantly improving the browser based on your suggestions.

But one thing became clear: Bare needed its own identity.

When I started this project as Chromium-Extend, the goal was simple: Build a better Chrome than Google does.

Keep the familiar Chrome experience, clean Material Design, and simplicity, but without the unnecessary bloat, telemetry, or subscriptions.

That philosophy isn't changing.

So, why Bare 2.0 already?

Bare 1.0 established the foundation, but it still looked and felt too much like Chromium.

Bare 2.0 changes that.

Here's what's coming:

  • A completely refreshed UI and a brand-new logo.
  • Better security and privacy controls.
  • Faster, easier tab management.
  • Improved extension integration.
  • Built-in translation.
  • More customization without the bloat.

And yes, we're keeping that familiar, vanilla Chrome feeling.

Bare will finally look and feel like Bare.

What's next?

Bare 2.0 is entering beta, and your feedback will continue to shape its development.

We're also working on better password management, backup and restore, improved import/export, and more community-requested features.

Bare is still an independent, open-source project. No subscriptions, no premium tiers, and no telemetry. Just a browser we're passionate about building.

If you're enjoying Bare, an honest Google Play review helps more than you might think. And if something needs improvement, keep the feedback coming. We're listening!

I started Bare as a personal project. Seeing it grow into something thousands of people use has been incredible.

Bare 2.0 is just the beginning.

Try Bare 2.0 on Google Play

Bare 2.0 is currently in public beta! Make sure to join the beta to get access to the latest version.

A quick heads-up: Bare 2.0 is still in beta, so expect a few bugs and rough edges along the way. That's what beta testing is for! Your feedback will help us make it even better.

It feels like 2004 again with the new browser wars.

• Upvotes

Back in 2004 there was what was known as the "second browser war" hotting up with both Firefox and Safari trying to dislodge Internet Explorer. The fact that Mozilla made an ad reflecting that era confirmed my feelings. Now in 2026 I am seeing browser innovation everywhere with browsers switching to fortnightly updates adding more and more features and also adding even more flexibility to the web engines themselves (More CSS and JavaScript capabilities coming in Interop 2026/27). I have multiple browsers installed again since there is so much innovation that I can't keep to one browser for all my use cases. If you're a browser dev you really need to listen to users feedback and sentiment on social media to keep your browser fresh and innovative. Then there is the upcoming alpha release of Ladybird which could really add new competition to by introducing a fourth modern capable engine to the mix.

I have Edge, Vivaldi and Firefox windows open right now and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Recommendation Switching from Arc

I wanna switch from Arc to another browser since their notice that it will shut down by December, I tried Dia but I'm not happy with it. I really loved Arc and loved the user experience there. It's sad that it will be shut down. anyone switched to a similar browser? or what browser are you planning to switch to? I tried Brave and it's good but I prefer Arc still. I heard about Zen. what do you think i should try? what's your daily browser that you use? would appreciate any recommendations.

Edit 1: I use Macbook Air M1

Recommendation Firefox or Opera? Looking for a Chrome alternative with profiles and more customization

• Upvotes

Chrome has been my primary browser for years, including on Android. I used Chrome profiles for different purposes, such as Personal, Work 1, Work 2, etc.

Later, I moved to Arc as my primary browser and kept Chrome as secondary. However, with Arc's development coming to an end, I'm looking for an alternative.

I've always liked Firefox, but somehow never stuck with it. Now, I'm slowly moving to Firefox as my primary browser, with Chrome as a backup.

I also wanted to try Dia, but unfortunately, it doesn't support Windows 10.

Recently, I visited Opera's website and discovered that they have multiple versions, like Opera, Opera Air, and Opera GX. Now I'm confused about whether I should stick with Firefox or give Opera a try.

Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Browser profiles similar to Chrome, so I can easily switch between personal and work accounts.
  • Good customization options.
  • Smooth everyday browsing, AI chat tools, social media, and online shopping.
  • Sync between desktop and Android would be a bonus.

I'm not interested in switching to Brave or Edge, so please don't suggest them.

For those who've used Firefox and Opera, which would you recommend for my needs, and why? I'm also open to other alternatives that offer proper profile management and customization.

Extension After Pocket shut down I built a browser extension to save and search articles offline - would love feedback

Hey r/browsers,

Like a lot of people here I was using Pocket daily and then it shut down.

I tried the alternatives but I wanted something that:

- Works as a native browser extension (1 click save)

- Has full-text search that actually works offline

- Has a clean reader mode

- Lets me import my Pocket export

So I built FetchMark - it's a Chrome extension + web app. It saves the full article locally so you can read/search offline, then syncs.

It's free: https://fetchmarkapp.com

Chrome extension: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/fetchmark-%E2%80%94-save-and-orga/epbmoflnndmcfocekfbcnjpcfegnjcko?pli=1

I'm not trying to spam - genuinely looking for feedback from browser folks:

  1. Do you prefer bookmarks saved in browser storage vs cloud sync?

  2. Is offline search useful or am I overbuilding?

If you try it, let me know what breaks. Happy to share how I built the extension if useful.

No referral links, no paid tier right now.

Discussion A thousand Arc clones, none thinking forward

https://reddit.com/link/1xg55w0/video/y53a0gvevuxh1/player

Why is everyone trying to clone Arc instead of imagining what it could have become if it hadn’t been abandoned? None of these clones will be as good as Arc was, because none of them are thinking beyond what it is right now in its abandoned state. I’ve been a dedicated Arc user since the first alpha, so I started asking what that team would build if they were starting Arc in 2026. Trying to answer that question by building a browser that eliminates the need for tabs all up by implementing a canvas based UX (just one of many ideas). It includes much of what's expected, and what made Arc great, but also meant to be an evolution rather than a clone 🤷🏻‍♂️ https://parkweb.co

Is there anything similar to Vivaldi in terms of features?

It’s quite simple: I want to use Vivaldi, but the company I work for blocks any domain containing "...vivaldi..."—I can’t even sync my account.

So, I’d like to know if you can recommend a browser that includes these Vivaldi features:

- RSS feed

- Notes

- A preview of a website when hovering the mouse over a tab (I’m not sure what this feature is called, but it’s very useful for viewing a site without leaving the current tab)

Thanks.

I moved my browser data from Windows to Linux without ever booting Windows - here's the hole I had to dig

I'm running a dual-boot: Windows for leftovers, Arch for real life. When I finally moved, one boring chore was still sitting there - my actual browser life: about 3,600 live session cookies, 236 saved passwords, bookmarks in two Chrome profiles.

The obvious "solution" - boot Windows, run Chrome's export - felt like a whole ritual for 5 minutes of work. And it wouldn't even work properly: the target browser's "import" moves passwords at best, sessions/cookies nothing; Brave can't join Google sync; and the only public tools that unwrap modern Chrome's App-Bound Encryption all demand a running Windows with admin rights. So I did the stubborn thing: read the mounted partition straight from Linux and never booted it.

Without getting into hex dumps: Windows stores the browser's master key behind two layers of DPAPI (the OS crypto), and Chrome adds a third layer whose key material hides in a system key container on disk. Each layer had a different way to reopen it offline, and the last one checks itself with AES-GCM - which is actually great news: either the whole chain is right or it fails loudly, nothing decodes into garbage. The full byte-level story is in the repo's PIPELINE.md.

The funniest traps were actually on the Linux side:

  • After import, Brave's password manager showed nothing while the database clearly had rows. Turns out the browser silently hides entries it cannot decrypt - the GNOME keyring daemon wasn't running. One autostart file later, all 233 lines appeared.
  • A batched cookie import dies entirely on the first cookie with a binary value - 13 sessions (webcams, ticket portals, whatever) just don't have a text value and must be re-logged manually.
  • Passwords synced from Chrome-on-Android show up as android://... entries. Normal. Don't "fix" them.

The write-up (methodology, pipeline, caveats) and the sanitized scripts are here, nothing personal is committed: https://github.com/rviach/chrome-offline-to-brave

Scope note: this is a tool for your own machine - it needs both the disk and your Windows login password, so it's migration/forensics, not a stealer.

Happy to answer questions about the chain or the CDP import quirks.

Graphene os team recommand vanadium, and I fully trust them, but vanadium is not available for regular android. What would you recommend for minimal attack surface and privacy concern?

Discussion I made my own macOS browser, Lumen: native, lightweight, WebKit-based. Looking for feedback

For the past few months I’ve been building Lumen, a native macOS browser written in Swift and SwiftUI on top of WebKit (the same engine as Safari, but it’s not a Safari reskin). I wanted something lighter than Chrome, with vertical tabs like Arc, but fully native and without an account.

All the releases are from today because I’d already built the whole browser but never put it on GitHub, so I just uploaded all the versions I’d made. (If you see gaps between the uploads, it’s because I was running the tests, building the DMGs and so on.)

What it does:

  • Vertical tab sidebar with tab groups, plus an optional top tab bar
  • Profiles: separate cookies and logins for each profile (work, personal…)
  • Power-aware: in Low Power Mode or when memory is low, idle background tabs go to sleep
  • Built-in password manager and per-site camera and microphone permissions
  • Privacy and data-clearing tools
  • Turn sites into web apps
  • Downloads you can resume after they’re interrupted
  • Fast history and session restore
  • Built-in updates that check the download’s signature and checksum

What it doesn’t have (yet): Chrome extensions (it’s WebKit, not Chromium), and sync between devices.

Native Swift, no Electron, no account, no telemetry. It’s completely free and open source.
Download it from: scadavide55.github.io/Lumen
Code: github.com/scadavide55/Lumen

It’s still a work in progress (latest pre-release is 1.5.2). What’s missing that would make you try it as your daily browser? And what do you hate about your current one?
