Announcement Official /r/beer FAQ - Please Check Here Before Posting

THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS A BEER FAQ. IT IS ADDRESSING A FEW FREQUENTLY BROUGHT UP TOPICS ON /R/BEER.

Hi there,

There has been some need for announcements on a few different commonly posted topics. Since we are limited to two stickied posts, I'm going to use this one as a hub for these issues. I will be adding to this post as needed, but here's a /r/Beer FAQ to cover these post types.

If you notice people posting these topics, please be polite. Feel free to link to this post or use the provided links in a response.

This is not an invitation to harass anyone for posting a repeated topic. Reddit does not do a good job with presenting subreddit announcements, rules, sidebar info, etc. If posts annoy you and you don't think they belong, please consider downvoting, using a report, sending us a modmail message, hiding the post or simply moving on with your day. I highly suggest using the "don't show me submissions after I've downvoted them" option in old.reddit preferences (this may be broken in the app/resdesign website, but it should be fixed eventually and appear in those preferences as well).

Medical questions will be limited. /r/Beer is the wrong forum for serious medical questions, particularly where there's potential for harm to come as a result of the discussion. Please consult a medical professional for any questions about your own health, not an online beer discussion board.

I'm trying to hit the more pressing topics first, but I'll look for some good links for other topics ("how do I figure out what kind of beers I like?", "what are the best budget beers?", etc.).

Everyone is welcome to join the official /r/Beer Discord server if you'd like to discuss anything here or just hang out and chat.

Cheers.

Edit: I'm locking this to comments because I don't want to have the post turn into a place where people ask these questions. However, feel free to post about any topics or send us suggestions for topics to be added via modmail or Discord chat.

Also, I may use the second announcement slot for a specific post on something like old beer questions, but I'd prefer to keep it open for the weekly No Stupid Questions posts (and possibly others; still working on redoing the scheduled posts and making some better topics).

¿Question? what's the one food that makes a cold beer taste even better

a good beer is nice on its own, but the right food can make the whole experience better. For some people it's pizza or burgers, while others swear by spicy food or simple snacks. What's your favorite food to pair with a beer?

Which brewery would you happily travel out of your way to visit?

I'm curious which breweries are genuinely worth making a trip for, whether it's because of their beer selection, the taproom atmosphere, or something unique about the brewery itself.

I'm especially interested in places that do something different from the usual lineup. Maybe they specialize in a particular style, have a great beer garden, or make a seasonal release that's worth looking forward to.

What's a brewery you've visited that left a lasting impression on you, and what beer would you recommend trying there?

What beer style took you the longest to appreciate?

Some beer styles seem to be acquired tastes. Stouts can be too roasty, IPAs too bitter, sours too funky, and certain Belgian beers can taste downright strange if you're not used to them.

It's interesting how a style you once avoided can eventually become something you actively look for.

Which beer style grew on you the most, and was there a particular beer that finally made it click?

Which Beer Gardens/Taprooms in NYC do You Recommend For Beers Other Than IPAs?

Ive tried a few beer gardens/taprooms (blind tiger, eckhart, evil twin, finback, grimm, other half, threes, and wild east) and I noticed that I like darker beers that are full-bodied and sweeter and lighter beers that are wheat-forward.

I dont really like IPAs. Ironically, I had a west-coast pilsner that I thought was pretty good.

Id like to try more beers that arent IPAs and Im wondering which beer gardens/taprooms in nyc youd recommend? I considering harlem hops and torst.

Sorry, I reposted since I didnt specify nyc as the location

Massachusetts beer suggestions

Hey yall

I am looking for craft beer suggestions from MA for a friend

I am from MA, but don’t really drink. However my friend here in NJ loves craft beers, specially light pale ales, and always lets me crash when it gets late so I want to get him some beer when I go back home (specially to Worcester )

Yeah, if yall have any suggestions please let me know. My fall back is wachusett beer because I can’t get it in NJ, but I’m looking for something more niche

Thank you

Anyone know why you apparently can’t find any Anderson Valley Brewing in Georgia? Briny Melon and the Watermelon Gose used to be our jam but they seem to just be gone now.

Anyone try it? Had a little today and enjoyed it but not sure I'd drink in volume. Alcohol content was 4.7%. Made by Japanese in America.

Used to think stouts were disgusting until I tried one that actually changed my mind

For the longest time I avoided certain beer styles because the first one I tried was just not it. Figured I didn't like the style and moved on.

Then you try one good example and realize maybe the problem wasn't the style after all.

Happened to me with beers before, and now I'm always a little more willing to give something another shot instead of writing off the whole category.

Discussion Treehouse overrated?

I just got back from a trip and picked up a case of Treehouse beer. I wanted to see what the hype was all about.

Let me tell you, from the beers I’ve had so far, it’s all just hype.

I’ve heard people call these beers smooth - they most certainly are not. They all have a hop bite to them. The DIPAs and TIPAs are boozy.

I’ve heard people call them flavorful - the flavor is generically hoppy and kind of bitter for hazy IPAs. There isn’t really a depth of flavor or any standout characteristics.

The IPAs have 4.5 stars on Untappd. Come on, they’re not that good.

This has been just another example that people buy into hype and regurgitate opinions as fact.

Were they better 10-15 years ago? Were they always like this? I’m trying to understand how a seemingly average product gets this reputation, and then maintains it.

Hot Take. The "winter warmer" style isnt that great and isnt much better than "pumpkin beers."

So the first winter seasonal in my area just showed up and of course its a winter warmer from a local regional brewery. I really want to like this style but its just average and meh to me. Id much rather have a stout or porter than this. It does remind me of pumpkin beers a bit with all the added spices. To go from marzens and festbiers in the fall to the winter seasonals is such a letdown imo.

Discussion Not a fan of Guinness

I'm usually a Weihenstephaner or Mich Ultra guy. People joke about ultra, but that shit is good lol. I tried Guinness today, I was not impressed, I've heard people hype it up, but I don't get it. It tastes like really dark coffee to me.

Revos beer concentration system

Thumbnail
alfalaval.com
0 Upvotes

The Alfa Laval Revos™ lets breweries ship beer concentrate in order to cut bulk freight costs by up to 80%.

  • The Tech: Uses a cold, two-stage high-pressure w reverse osmosis to remove water without heat; preserving flavor, aroma, and alcohol up to 22% ABV.
  • Why it matters: Beer is ~90% water, so slashing volume by up to 80% drastically cuts shipping weight, cold-storage needs, keg turnover, and transport CO2 emissions.
  • The Pour: The concentrate is shipped to pubs/venues and rehydrated + carbonated on the fly using a "Re-draft" dispensing tap.

Hope this work, because diluted beer sounds awfull.

Discussion How to pluralize Labatt

Major disagreement at the bar. You’re ordering labatt because it’s delicious.

Option 1: a single beer for yourself is “a labatts please” and a round for the table is “3 labatt”

Option 2: a single beer for yourself is “a labatt please” and a round for the table is “3 labatts”

I think we all know I’m right but I wrote this as neutrally as possible. Assume “please” is at the end of all orders because we are polite orderers. Loser takes a shot of malort

Miss these from my past Coors Extra Gold - Pete's Wicked Ale

Fall is always a sad time for this older beer drinker - I remember the days when we would get some Coors Extra Gold (1985) and Pete's Wicked Ale (1986?) - My tastes have gone from the heavier of the commercial beers to the hoppier micro brews but back then, these were favorites...

Where to find ABC Stout in the States?

It's my girlfriend's dad's favorite beer, and he hasn't had it since immigrating to the States from Burma in the early 2000s. I'd love to surprise him with some for his upcoming birthday. Having trouble finding a place in the US that carries it. Appreciate any insight.

15+ year old 120 Minute IPA

I have kept a bottle of Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA sitting still in a refrigerator for well over 15 years (along with Russian River Damnation), only because someone said these can age, then I always forgot about these in the fridge.

Keep them refrigerated or Pop them open?
