People who work out before work, how do you manage it?

I work 9–5 and commute about an hour each way. By the time I get home, I’m too exhausted to hit the gym.
Thinking of switching to morning workouts. For those who do it, what time do you wake up, and how do you manage your routine without feeling exhausted all day?
Any tips for making it a habit?

Is viral gastroenteritis going around Toronto right now? I'm on day 3 and absolutely miserable.

woke up Sunday morning with some of the worst symptoms I've experienced in a long time. Watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting (so violently that it even came out of my nose), muscle aches, headaches, extreme weakness, a low-grade fever, chills, and abdominal pain. can't even eat now. Ate a burger place on Saturday did I catch it from there?

I'm now on day 3 of this mess, and I'm genuinely suffering. I've completely lost my appetite, and I'm still experiencing watery diarrhea almost every hour. I'm so physically exhausted that I barely have the energy to do anything, let alone make a trip to the doctor.

I came across another post in this subreddit mentioning that an ER doctor said viral gastroenteritis was going around Toronto, and now I'm wondering if that's what I've caught. I haven't been diagnosed, so I can't say for certain, but the symptoms seem to line up.

Please, guys, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the washroom. I genuinely wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Has anyone else in Toronto been experiencing something similar recently? If so, how long did it take for your symptoms to resolve? I'm exhausted and just want to feel normal again.

Is $80K enough to live comfortably in Toronto?

Curious how single people earning around $80K are managing in Toronto.
Is it enough to rent your own place, enjoy life, and still save money?
For those earning $75K–$85K, how much are you paying in rent and saving each month?

How to deal with off leash dogs in a North york park

I see a group of dogs gathering at a public park in North York everyday, morning and evening. A lot of them are big and the owners let them roam around off leash, taking up the whole grass field, even though there is a sign saying dogs need to be leashed. My small dog is a rescue with a very tragic past. She is timid and gets intimidated by big dogs or dogs that are too assertive so introductions need to be slow. When she sees these dogs at the park, she whimpers and i have to carry her. And I can’t confront these group of dog owners alone. It’s not just these owners, this area in general has way too many off leash dogs. When I do ask the owners to leash their dogs, they just tell me their dog is ok (it scares my dog still) or tell me they have ecollars and so they’re leashed and I need to train my dog (their dogs run at my dog). I am so tired of feeling guilty and having to walk around the park in fear. How can I deal with this situation without becoming a public enemy of this neighborhood?
I already made a report to 311 but not sure what could be done realistically about a large group of dogs…

Edit: thanks everyone for the response, i did report it already with pictures so we will see if it works, for those of you telling me to avoid the park.. i live near yonge street in a condo with no car so access to green space is a bit limited and almost every park in this area within reasonable walking distance has off leash dogs roaming around, even on the sidewalks. I feel like it is time the city really did something about this..

Anyone manage to have a TDSB school bus stop moved? Who can I escalate to?

The title is self-explanatory - the rest of this is just the specifics of my frustration.

The TSTG (Toronto Student Transportation Group) has just about broken me.

My child is the only kid at his bus stop. He's four years old, and takes 20 minutes to get from our front door to to the 'common bus stop' at our nearby English school... only to spend another 40 minutes actually sitting on the bus.

There's a bus stop on our road already used by the nearby Catholic school and I've been trying since the first day of school to have his stop moved to the same location. It's a four minute drive from his current stop and - based on the route map - would actually save the driver some time.

I understand that French Immersion students are generally directed to a bus stop at their local English school. And if there were other kids there, I would be completely okay with that. Inconvenient, but manageable. But I'm pregnant, he's small, and the English school is on a tiny street that's always busy and chaotic with drop-offs at that hour. This seems like such an obvious change to make, for both safety and convenience.

I've called and emailed tstg repeatedly. They gave me a ticket number over a month ago - great. Said I'd hear back in 3-4 business days. I followed up and was told my ticket was marked "high priority". Still, nothing happened. Called again today, and a very rude woman basically told me "tough shit, it's unlikely to change". (Although she said it a lot more professionally than that, with a bunch of excuses about why they keep promising and failing to get back to me.)

I tried talking to the bus driver directly about "unofficially" moving the stop, but he's understandably worried about getting into trouble.

I'm out of ideas. Someone recommended contacting a tdsb superintendent, but I'm not sure which one would cover something like this. If you've had any luck moving you child's bus stop through official channels, please let me know!

Why was the 2022 Toronto Mayor Election such a snoozefest?

I was looking at the Wikipedia pages of past Toronto elections. 2022 seemed so recently, yet the Wikipedia article is so short compared to even 2023 where it was just a by-election.

How come in 2022 so few people voted? Even 2023 had a way bigger turnout, despite being a snap election. And how come there was only 1 period of polling listed whereby we've effectively done daily polls for both 2023 and 2026 elections?

And how did Redditors feel about that election at the time? Like there's so much narrative around why Reddit, particularly r/Toronto heavily endorsed Olivia Chow, while opponents would counter with "Reddit does no represent real life".

Has anyone seen police speed radars recently?

Might just be me but ever since the speed cameras were gutted, I haven’t seen one police speed radar set up anywhere.

Other than on the highways, has anyone else seen any?

Best employment resources or agencies for people with advanced degrees?

• Upvotes

I am about to graduate with my PhD and have been struggling to find work. I understand the job market is absolutely terrible right now for most folks. I have been applying for full time, part time, casual, and contract research positions (both within academia and the private sector) with absolutely no response. At this point, I’m struggling financially and it’s beginning to severely affect my ability to live.

Background info: 37 y/o woman in the health sciences/social sciences with advanced training in qualitative research.

Are there any employment agencies that have experience with people in my field/with advanced degrees in Toronto that can help with resumes, career planning, networking, or even training?

I’ve done a pretty thorough search but wanted to see if anyone on here had any lived experience, tips, or any resources that might help. I have only been in the city for a year and all of my networks and contacts are in another province, so I’m hoping someone with more insight into the area can point me in the right direction.

Thank you in advance for any information!

Election volunteers, what's next?

Hi! I put in a few shifts volunteering for an electoral campaign each election, but I don't have a "regular" volunteering gig in between. What are you all doing now that the election is over to stay involved in your communities or active with your candidates/city hall? Looking for suggestions while I'm engaged and motivated lol!

Dress Shirt and Blazer store recommendations!

• Upvotes

Hello TO friends,

Starting a new job after being unemployed for 13 months, but the dress code is either: blazer and a dress shirt OR dress shirt with a tie.

I haven't worn something of that strict of a dress code in years, so I'm wanting to update my wardrobe.

Currently looking to purchase:

1 Blazer with matching dress pants.

5 Dress Shirts that I can wear throughout the week.

A few ties that will look nice, I only have a black one.

Budget: Hoping to spend $500, I feel that's quite low, but willing to go as high as 800.

Any recommendations would be great, I've read already about the Suit Supply, but feel like it is a bit out of my budget, but if I'm wearing this everyday, willing to spend a bit more for comfort and tailored!

How do they know I’m a citizen?

So I just voted for the first time since becoming a Canadian citizen. I didn’t register to vote in advance. When I got to my voting location, they checked my drivers license, filled out a form with paper and pen and added me to the list, and allowed me to vote. I don’t think I saw them check my name off any existing list etc., and just added me based on my ID. How do they know I’m a Canadian citizen and have the right to vote? In theory, my husband, who is not a Canadian citizen could have followed the same steps.. what am I missing?
On another note, it felt amazing to be able to vote after living in this city for many years 🌟

1 hour wait at Lifelabs

not trying to sound entitled, genuinely asking 😭 but is it normal to wait an hour at LifeLabs even when you booked an appointment? like, what’s the point of booking an appointment if you’re still waiting an hour or so while walk-ins seem to be getting accommodated first? 🥲😭

this is in scarborough location btw

edit: I have an appointment at 2pm. it’s currently 3:44pm and they’re closing at 4pm 😭😭

Question for those voting Brad because of crime or safety:

I’ve been thinking a lot about this type of exchange I’ve seen frequently online. Someone says they are voting for Brad because crime is out of control, or they don’t feel safe in the city. Someone else will respond with stats about how crime is down in the last few years. And the OP will respond with “but it feels less safe.”

So my question is: what could a mayor do that would change your “perception” of crime and safety? Reducing the amount of crime hasn’t had an effect on your perception, so what would make you feel safer?

Suggestions for indoor public space to play cardgames sundays 9-11am

Trying to setup a hangout with randos from reddit/discord. Im only available sunday mornings and most (except dufferin mall) malls dont open until 11am. Can anyone suggest places that fit the bill?

Realistically anywhere the GTA is fine, the randos dont necessarily drive so TTC friendly would help them out for sure.

prescription fee in pharmacy

if a doctor prescribed 60 pills and it says 0 refill.

Now i take this to pharmacy and they gave me 30 pills and put 1 refill .

This means I need to pay prescription fee twice as they made it 30+30 instead of 60 direct.

Is this standard practice of the pharmacy is doing tricks ?

Public karaoke around Yonge & Finch

I'm going out to dinner with friends in a couple of weeks and we wanted to do some karaoke around Yonge and Finch. From everything I've seen, they're all private.

Does anyone know of a bar within walking distance that has public karaoke on Friday nights?

Scarborough - Best Food Related Charities for Donation

Does anyone work for, or have experience with local organizations such as breakfast clubs, community food banks, pantry's, shelters, programs that could benefit from a donation of 2-3 pickup trucks worth of non perishables? Preferably benefiting Scarbrough.

Long story short we organize a local event annually that raises a sizeable donation of non-perishables . In prior years we donated it all to a well known Scarborough food bank. However to be frank we have concerns with how the items are being distributed and if they really make it into the hands of families and individuals who need them.

Does anyone have any recommendations for local organizations that they know do great work, who could benefit from something like this? Would appreciate any recommendations that we could look into. Again ideally serving our local community of Scarborough Southwest.

TPL Art Classes - Has Anyone Been?

Hi!

I just discovered TPL offers art classes/workshops.

Has anyone been and, if so, how are they? There’s an upcoming one I’m interested in but it’s at a branch on the other side of the city from me. Thought I’d crowd source reviews before making the trek.

Thanks!
