Megathread It's election day, Toronto. Join us all day for news, answers and free coverage.
EDIT: Thanks for joining us, Toronto. We're winding down updates to this mega thread for tonight. Still got questions? Tune into our Q&A tomorrow (Tuesday) with City Hall reporters Ben Spurr and Ben Cohen. The live chat will take place at 12 p.m. in the comments section here.
UPDATE, 10:39 p.m.: Olivia Chow is currently making her victory speech. "The people of Toronto have spoken... you have given me the extraordinary honour of continuing to serve as your mayor. I am so proud of our city. It was a hard fought election." On Bradford, she added: "We had our differences, we fought hard for what we believed in... I do not doubt we both want what is best for our city."
UPDATE, 10:30 p.m.: Brad Bradford is currently making his concession speech. Bradford won 1.2 per cent of the vote in 2023 and well over 40 per cent this year. "This is not the result we were hoping for tonight," he said. "All of you folks here took a risk and made a bet... This was a campaign of hope and energy."
KEY UPDATE, 10.04 p.m.: Chow is projected to win after a hard-fought race with her chief rival, Beaches–East York councillor Brad Bradford. Chow, first elected mayor in 2023, ran a campaign that emphasized her progressive record, arguing Bradford’s promises would necessitate massive cuts to services.
UPDATE, 9:18 p.m.: The first polls have just begun reporting results. Brad Bradford has taken a lead in the race for mayor with 41,531 votes to Olivia Chow's 32,119, but that's with just 67 of 1,431 polls reporting. Results will vary wildly in these early stages.
UPDATE, 8.56 p.m.: A source close to Chow’s team tells the Star they hear there are still lines at polls in Regent Park and Scarborough, which may explain the delay in results. As the Star previously reported, Scarborough’s turnout may just determine the mayoral race.
UPDATE, 8.00 p.m.: As of 8 p.m., most polls have closed, except at 11 locations where voting times were extended by up to 20 minutes. If you're still in line, don't worry, you will still be able to vote as long as you were in line before or at closing time. A city spokesperson said results at the 11 locations where voting times were extended can be expected starting around 8:20 p.m.
UPDATE, 7:30 p.m.: Polls will be closing in 30 minutes. We can expect results after 8 p.m. Our election results map will be updating live.
UPDATE, 6:41 p.m.: Voting hours have been extended at 11 voting locations across the city by up to 20 minutes due to “disruptions earlier in the day,” according to the city. Voting is only extended for voters assigned to the 11 locations. A full list of where voting hours have been extended can be found on the city’s website. If a voter is in line by 8 p.m., they will still be able to vote.

Discussion Braeden Chow votes
Did that many people mean to vote for Braeden, or were those votes meant for Olivia Chow? Also a little concerning there were that many unserious voters, voting for Alexander and Gong. Anyway, congrats to Olivia Chow!

Discussion Now that it's over, let's talk about the fairy tale media narrative around Brad Bradford.
Bradford: *lags behind Olivia Chow in the polls literally all year*
Our media: He's gaining momentum!
Bradford: *still lags behind Olivia Chow after picking up Chris Alexander's vote share*
Our media: He's closing the gap!
Bradford: *loses the election by 128,000 votes*
Our media: He nearly won it all.

Discussion Shoutout to all the Toronto election workers today!
Regardless of who you voted for or how you feel about tonight’s results, let’s take a moment to thank the thousands of election workers who made today’s municipal election possible.
From setting up polling stations early in the morning to helping voters, managing lineups, counting ballots, and staying late to close everything down, it’s a long and demanding day.
A lot of work goes on behind the scenes that most of us never see.
Our democracy depends on people willing to show up and do this important work.
To everyone who worked at a polling station today: thank you! Your efforts are appreciated.

Discussion Voter turnout
Best I can tell, turnout in the municipal election was double what it was in 2022.
545K votes total for mayor in 2022.
Bradford got 74% that many votes by himself—404K—in 2026 and still lost.
What a seismic shift.

Discussion I worked today
I worked as a ballot officer in Ward 8 today, and it turned out to be an amazing day. The morning rush was intense with long lines, and then there was a constant flow till 8.
I saw a lot of seniors, along with many young people who came out to vote. We had a brief issue with our tabulator, but support arrived quickly and resolved it in less than 30 minutes.
Voters were also very patient whenever they were sent to revising officers for any changes.
A huge thank you to the TPL staff, they are truly one of the best things in the city.
10/10, would do it again, Toronto!

News Thank you to the rest of Toronto from Etobicoke Centre for saving us from ourselves
I was really worried when I saw the early results coming in. However, a friend of mine told me that the downtown and Scarborough votes hadn’t come in yet. That was a relief.
Yes, we sadly elected Holyday again but at least it wasn’t with a 70% margin this time. I think with some good organizing he could be defeated in the next election like how Morley defeated Grimes in South Etobicoke.
Anyway, a big thank you again to the rest of the city for saving us from ourselves.
