Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo

It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.

After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.

As explained by the previous flair announcement:

The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.

While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.

Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.

Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.

Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

Vote

Today is voting day for municipal elections. You can vote online or in person. You simply have to decide who you think is the best person out of the choices given.

Not voting is not a protest. You are simply letting other people make that decision for you. If you do 2 minutes of research and cast your vote, it is still better than the person who will make that choice for you.

Consider that this person who you trust more than yourself, may not have done even the 2 minutes of research that you won't do. They may even be the driver on the road you hate, or the school parent you won't trust your kid with, or the owner of the thing that did you wrong that one time.

You are letting them decide for you.

Do we have a list of Coalition for Life and/ or other extremist Candidates?

It's really hard to keep track of who all these people are

It seems they're trying to destroy education using the same tactics they did in the states, leading to more fake Christians in power across the board.

A list would help today if there is one?

Okay this is tiresome. Does anyone have or know anyone renting out a room/studio?

I can’t with facebook marketplace and kijiji and roomies. Everything is either female only, vegetarian only, indian preferred, straight up predatory conditions like coin laundry in a house, walk in closets for rent… etc etc etc the list goes on and on.

And yes i reached out to sterling housing. They told me they’ll cover last month’s deposit but i have to find a place myself and provide proof of agreement.

I desperately need a place before it becomes cold.

Thanks!

Heritage planners in the region

I am studying Urban Planning and GIS at Conestoga college, for one of my assignments I need to interview a heritage planner from the region, it doesn’t has to be in person, I can send you an email with the questions and you can reply back to them. I have tried to reach out to the City of Kitchener Heritage Department to get one of the planners for the interview, but with the new Doug Ford “Designate or Lose It” deadline I understand that all of the staff in the building will be busy.

If you are a heritage planner in the region and would like to help me with this assignment please send me a DM so I can forward my questions to you via email.

Campaign Life Coalition could win a majority on the Waterloo Region District School Board on Monday because the rest of us aren't watching

Election day is this Monday. Polls are open until 8 p.m. and some local municipalities offer online voting. Go to https://wrvotes.com/ to get more information.

Many people here have said they're struggling to find information on the WRDSB trustee candidates. Here's what I've found, building on Lauren Weinberg's excellent roundup in Citified: https://citified.substack.com/p/municipal-election-2026

Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), a hard-right religious lobby, has green-lit enough candidates to fill 10 of the board's 11 seats. Trustee races get almost no attention and it feels like even fewer people are paying attention this election, so their green-lit candidates could win control of the school board without most of us noticing until it's done.

Consider this a list of who not to vote for. If you like what CLC is selling, well then I guess it's a list of who to vote for.

If you're not familiar with CLC, their agenda includes fighting sex ed that teaches kids consent and how to recognize and report abuse, banning books, attacking anti-racism and inclusion work, opposing acceptance of LGBTQ people, and outing trans kids. Listen for their dog whistles: "parental rights," "gender ideology," "age-appropriate," and, ironically, "keep politics out of schools."

Most areas elect several trustees, and CLC voters tend to vote as a bloc. If votes are split among the non-CLC candidates, CLC picks can win seats with a small share. The names recommended below are candidates who look like the strongest opposition or keep getting suggested to me by people who are following these elections closely. If you prefer another non-CLC candidate, go for it. I'm just one guy on the internet.

Every "Avoid" name below has a CLC green light, except Julia Malott. Names are listed alphabetically by last name.

Kitchener (elect 4)

  • Avoid:
    • Ahmed Kassad
    • Mandy Kaur
    • Sajid Kolsawala
  • Also avoid:
    • Julia Malott. CLC hasn't published an evaluation of her positions, so she has no green or red light. She's a trans woman, but she's a conservative who argues against trans-inclusive school policies and has become a go-to trans voice for people pushing policies that hurt trans kids. Her National Post columns say making schools tell parents about a student's new name or pronouns isn't "outing," and she has pushed that policy at the WRDSB.
  • Vote:
    • Mark Cairns
    • Brent Hutzal
    • Rachel McQuail
    • Sara Taghizadeh-Heroux

Waterloo/Wilmot (elect 3)

  • Avoid:
    • Cristina Bairos Fernandes
    • Clinton Heffernan
    • Geoff Horsman
  • Vote:
    • Brian Best
    • Karen Coviello
    • Kathleen Woodcock

Woolwich/Wellesley (elect 1)

  • Avoid:
    • Jen Burkholder
    • Carlene Hawley
  • Vote:
    • Ashley Gilbert

Cambridge/North Dumfries (elect 3)

This one's a mess for anyone who doesn't want the CLC picks to win. CLC has three picks for three seats. Shannon Adshade is the only strong non-CLC candidate still running. Carla Johnson, a solid incumbent, withdrew for health reasons after the deadline, so she's still on the ballot. There's almost nothing out there on Syed Ahmed, Richard Pfeifle, or Riaz Sial.

  • Avoid:
    • Naeem Awan
    • John Dideczek
    • Cindy Watson
  • Vote:
    • Shannon Adshade
    • Carla Johnson
    • Richard Pfeifle

If Johnson wins and declines, there's a process to fill the seat, and someone with a CLC red light can come forward. From what I've been able to learn, Pfeifle is the best bet of the unknowns.

Please vote in the trustee race, and use all your votes.

BEWARE, "SAN AUTO-HUB" / USED VEHICLES DEALER , 162 Ottawa St, corner Weber St KITCHENER

Subject: Predatory Tactics, Fraudulent Charges, and Refusal to Refund Cash Deposit Date of Incident: October 21, 2026 Location: SAN Autohub Inc., 160 Ottawa St N, Kitchener, ON I am a 72-year-old senior citizen, and I am writing this to warn the Kitchener-Waterloo community about the predatory and deceptive business practices at SAN Autohub. On October 21, 2026, I visited this dealership intending to look at a specific vehicle. The staff held me at the dealership for over three to four hours, employing intense high-pressure sales tactics. During this time, they performed a "switcheroo" on the vehicle I was initially interested in. When they finally brought out the paperwork hours later, they had slipped in an extra $2,000 charge for a 60,000 km warranty that was never once discussed or agreed upon. Furthermore, they attempted to charge an arbitrary $4,000 "financing fee" from their end, which they claimed they would "knock down" to $3,000 because I mentioned I was going through hard times. That evening, I was pressured into giving a $400 cash deposit (consisting of fifteen $20 bills and one $100 bill) directly to the owner and his partner to hold the deal. The very next day, the entire arrangement fell apart. After speaking directly with the financing company based out of Toronto, I discovered that there is absolutely no active contract or financing approval for any vehicle from this dealership whatsoever. The deal is non-existent, and the paperwork was torn up. Despite there being no contract, no vehicle, and no transaction, SAN Autohub has spent the last several days flatly refusing to return my $400 cash deposit. As a senior living on a fixed income, this money is actively being withheld from me when I need it immediately to buy food and survive. Taking money from vulnerable seniors and refusing to return an unapplied deposit is completely unacceptable. I have already initiated a formal complaint with the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) and will be pursuing this through all consumer protection and legal avenues until my cash is returned. Avoid this business at all costs.

A group of 4 young people, presumably students, get out of a Porsche on Willis way between king and Regina, only to park with 4 ways on and go into a pastry shop.

Parking tickets are just expensive parking passes right? Where's a ticketer when you need one.

Shame

Trustees for Waterloo District School Board

I’m getting ready to vote and reading through the candidate’s websites. And I met a couple of them. And most importantly, I’ve talked to several friends who teach and work in WRDSB.

Heartily endorsed by my teacher/principal friends:
Brain Best
Karen Coviello
Kathleen Woodcock

And the ones who want to “protect our children” from certain books and ideas are Christina Barios Fernandez and Geoff Horsman. My kids attend local schools and I can assure you that there is no harmful “ideological indoctrination” going on. So Fernandez and Horsman are big red flags for me.

My two cents. But go look at their websites yourself.

Looking for an indoor gymnasium in Kitchener-Waterloo region

Hey guys, I'm looking for an affordable indoor space in Kitchener- Waterloo to host sports and activities in the winter for my fitness club. But it's been difficult

So far I've reached out to YMCA, but they don't provide rentals to the public, I've had trouble getting responses from Kitchener community centres after summiting booking. I'm hoping Rbj Cowan centre will be an option once they open up but I don't see a booking information available online

It will be for 20 people. So for anyone that's rented an indoor gym where did you go?

What's the folk music scene like in Waterloo?

Hi, so I grew up in Waterloo, but I realized recently I don't really know what the folk music scene is like here.

I've been away for a couple of years doing journalism school up in Ottawa, and I came back recently to do an internship for a digital publication for folk, country and roots music.

I'm interested in talking to artists in this city or nearby, or really if anyone has knowledge on stuff coming up soon I would really appreciate it.

Voting day is tomorrow, Monday, October 26.

For those who have yet to vote municipally, CBC Kitchener-Waterloo has collected all of their coveragei including candidate response to their questions in one spot: Waterloo Region Votes 2026

CBC K-W reached out to candidates in the municipal election and asked them to take part in a candidates survey.

They were asked the following questions:

  • Briefly describe what your top 3 priorities are in this election.
  • Explain how you would address priority #1.
  • Explain how you would address priority #2.
  • Explain how you would address priority #3.
  • What else do you want voters to know about you and your campaign?

Candidate responses are below. CBC K-W has not edited these responses for editorial purposes, but small changes may have been made for style or spelling.

Voters go to the polls on Monday, Oct. 26.

Most candidates responded. Those who did not were not listed.

There is quite the field of candidates out there. As a veteran of helping someone the campaign trail in the previous municipal elections, hats off to everyone putting in the effort to stand for election.
