WRX Before posting please read this first!

READ THE SUB FAQ FIRST. 90% of the repetitive questions we see on this sub are answered there. Even if you don't have an issue covered in the sub FAQ it will likely help you narrow down your question. If you have a question you think should be added to the sub FAQ feel free to message any of the authors of the FAQ.

If you are troubleshooting, give us all the info we need. For example, it's best to include your year/model, any AND ALL mods, and the specific tune you are running. The more info we have, the better we are at answering questions. We also ask you try to post the question/info in the comments below before posting to the sub as a whole. This will hopefully clean up some of the really repetitive questions.

A few common posts/questions we see everyday.

Does my engine sound okay?

  • 99% of the time the answer is yes. The fa20 sounds like a tractor. It is normal.

Are these numbers on the COBB AP normal?

  • A snapshot of your AP with the DAM less than one doesn't actually tell us anything about what is going on. All it tells us is that you had a knock event that your ECU recognized and adjusted for. The most common cause for DAM drop is bad gas. Go get a fresh tank of 93/91 from shell and add a gallon or two of e85 for a full tank. I would also like to point out that knock numbers of -1.41 are super common. They can be caused by your AC kicking on and any other noise really. nothing to worry about.

This thing on the front of my engine is not spinning with the belts, is it broken?

  • That is your AC compressor clutch. It only engages when the AC is on and the compressor is running.

Let me know if you guys want any other common questions added.

Barn find 2002 WRX

Happy Monday WRX people. This is my first post within this community. Recently I received the opportunity to purchase a 2002 WRX from my grandfather's home in Prescott Arizona. This story/explanation may be long but bear with me.

This 2002 WRX is in World Rally Blue, has 117k miles on engine and chassis, has a slew of period correct early 2000s modifications, and has a cross country rally history. It belonged to my step grandmother's son. The car was purchased sometime around 2004 and was immediately tastefully modified. It received the STI short throw shifter, a full APS stage 2 kit including a BOV, CAI, inlet pipe, full 3 inch turbo back exhaust, intercooler water spray system, APS badged alternator cover, and an APS Unichip piggyback ECU. I have not been able to find hardly anything about this company or its products save some historic forum posts. YouTube wasn't even a thing before this company went out of business so videos are basically non-existent. From what I've been able to gather, these parts were top of the line back in the early 2000s and are hard to find today.

Sometime in 2004-2005 it went on the AKA rally. A Gumball 3000 inspired rally from New York to Los Angeles. Ed Bolian went on this same rally and is featured in his episode of VinWiki "MTV followed me around the country at age 18". In order to enter this rally you needed to put on decal and sponsor stickers all over your car. The Arizona sun has forever burned these stickers into the clear coat over the cars 24 year life.

Unfortunately this car has been sitting around unloved for about the last 10 or so years. The interior is in immaculate condition. No cracks on the dash and the seats are barely worn. However, due to sitting in Prescott where there is a lot of wildlife, the engine bay has some extensive rodent damage. I have never attempted to fix anything electrical before, but I'm willing to give this car a good fighting chance. I'm debating on starting a small video series to document this awesome car and maybe uncover some more insight into its history.

Let me know what you guys think, id love to get some feedback/advice on what I should tackle first to get this car road worthy. Also let me know if you know anything about the AKA rally or APS parts. Seriously, I can barely find anything.

WRX One year yesterday

Post image
121 Upvotes

One year as of yesterday. The lady insisted on getting a picture, I guess looking back glade she did. I absolutely love this car, honestly never thought I would own a car like this. My first manual and car with turbo. I always wanted to learn how to drive manual and very proud of myself for just going for it. Most fun I ever had driving.

I'm not much of a car guy, but I'm always learning something especially here. Just got my 60k service done, everything is working smoothly so far. Last owner took really good care of the car. No mods yet, unless changing all the interior lights count lol.

Thank you guys for all the posts, it really helps. Going to try and keep this car as long as possible. Also thanks for all the waves, makes my day. ✌️

I got a new job lately that started paying me really well, I decided to start putting some more love into my darling dearest.

I’ve ordered some headlights and taillights for her and so hopefully they’ve arrived when I fly back from my next job swing. Unfortunately she’s out of commission because the clutch is fucked but soon she’ll be all repaired and I’ll be able to take her onto the road again.

Hopefully by January next year, there’ll be heaps of more stuff added but I don’t have any sort of mechanical background, I intend to do some mods to learn as I go.

Has anyone heard of or used subishop.com? Girlfriend ordered me some parts from that site and I'm wondering if the stuff coming in is legit.

First 2 photos are the of the difference between the new and old turbo to downpipe gaskets. I'll let the viewer figure out which is which. The last is the mid-pipe to tail pipe connection after 367k. No leak there! Naturally welded tight.

2003 wrx 5 speed manual. Is the metal pinch ring needed to install the shifter cup. https://youtu.be/nTrDDo1-_Rg?is=LzvTGbPMT-VFf8Ay I watched this video and he doesn’t use it. If it is needed, how would I install it because I know it won’t fit if I put it on as one piece.

General Question 2025 Exhaust modification

Howdy, Just picked up a 2025 WRX VB RS MT, loving it!
I’ve noticed a big difference between the sound my 2017 (stock) exhaust made compared to the sound (stock) exhaust on my 2025 WRX.
My 2017 WRX had that classic WRX rumble, I’m keen to know what’s changed with the exhaust setup, and what my best options are to obtain and swap out the stock exhaust for one that’s (still legal) but has the familiar WRX rumble?
Located in Australia

Glamour Shot Fun, Fun Fun

So picked up my 2026 Limited WRX on Friday. Today was the first real chance I had of getting out on the back roads around where I live, all I can say is FUN! I had a 2002 wagon then a 2009 wagon. In 2017 I went with a Mazda CX-9 and it died so new car shopping I went back to my fav and again won me over. Took it on some backroads that aren't heavily patrolled, so got to test her out on curves and hills without limiting my speed like many places require, I had told the sales person much lower speeds I realized than what I actually do when given the chance by a measure or 2. Have a 2 hour trip on Wednesday on a twisty road that I do once a month, it will be so much more enjoyable now.

What have you paid recently for clean example for one of these? They are my favorite car by far sticking with the true old school rally look. I’m not a wagon guy myself. Looking to gauge what a realistic price will be. Thanks.
