Let's talk about rules.

Howdy, folks!

This subreddit hasn't had codified rules in a while, mostly because the people here have usually been really chill with one another.

However, the vibe has changed over the past few months, and we've noticed some nasty behavior popping up and lurking around our community.

We don't allow bigotry like racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia on this subreddit. Generally speaking, we expect folks to be civil and decent towards one another.

Recently, we've noticed a distinct uptick in the amount of trolls who have been showing up in the comment sections of the various protest posts. We know they're trolls because they're almost always attacking the OP or trying to diminish the protest, and they usually have user activity across many state and local subreddits.

These aren't local folks - they're people coming into our space from elsewhere to stir up trouble.

Since this sort of behavior has only been getting worse, let's discuss our subreddit rules and which ones y'all think would be good to have for this space.

For a start:

  1. Be civil and respectful towards one another.
  2. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or bigotry.
  3. No spam.
  4. Follow all of reddit's rules.

What other rules do you think we need?

Howdy, y'all. I guess it's time for me to tap the sign again, because every time there are protests in the Triangle, someone goes around and mass reports all of those posts.

Strangely, we also tend to get a lot of people who post in all sorts of local area subreddits, all over the country, just to act like they're upset about this protest or that protest, and yet have never commented in our community before. Fancy that.

So there's some underhanded fuckery afoot, and y'all should be aware of it.

This subreddit is devoted to the protection and well being of our community at large. That means all of y'all. We cannot support the extrajudicial detainment of anyone, citizen or no. This country was built on laws and principles, meant to be a shining beacon of democracy where people would get a fair shake.

One of the cool things about America is you can come here and become American. It's one of our country's major strengths.

As a country, our diversity has repeatedly protected us - patriotic members of German and Japanese communities helped the US translate enemy communications during WWII. The Navajo code talkers weren't declassified until the 1970's because they were so effective - their codes were never broken. There's also the Tuskegee Airmen and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an all-Japanese unit which became the most decorated unit for its size in US history.

Today is also November 20th, a solemn day for trans folks across the US. It is the Trans Day of Remembrance, when we remember those we've lost to murder or suicide over the years. Unfortunately, I recognize more than a few of those names, and I hate the way the list gets longer every year.

Times are tough for our Hispanic and LGBT friends. People are anxious and scared. Bigotry and bullshit have been stoked and set loose upon the country; hatred has been running rampant. People are going to need protection, support, and resources.

This space is meant to be a refuge and a resource for our community. If you can't respect that, or if what I have said here is somehow objectionable to you, please leave.

Belief and Nonbelief in the Black Community

Triangle Freethought Society is excited to be present Candace R. M. Gorham, LCMHC, the President of the American Humanist Association to speak on Nov 1 in Morrisville. More information can be found on our event page. This event is free and open to the public.

Title: Belief and Nonbelief in the Black Community

Black atheists, humanists, and nonbelievers have been increasing significantly in recent years. However, Black Americans remain the most religious demographic in the country. This talk will explore some of the history of religion in the black community, how things are changing, and the future of non-belief in the black community.

Candace is a licensed professional mental health counselor. A former ordained minister turned atheist-humanist activist, she now writes and speaks on the intersections of race, religion, and mental health.

Candace entered the secular community by joining the Triangle Freethought Society (hey, that’s us!) She gained greater recognition with the release of her book The Ebony Exodus Project, which examined why Black women leave religion, and she has since authored On Death, Dying, and Disbelief and contributed to Women v. Religion.

Natural Hair Salons

Hello, I am a African American woman looking for a hair salon in the area (although traveling is not an issue) to help me maintain and care for my 4c natural hair. Even though I don't have anything against these styles: braids, perms/chemicals, locs, crocheted add-ins or curl softeners... I love all of these styles, but I'm looking for someone to help me with maintaining my natural hair.

If the salon isnt in the area, that's fine and I will travel, I just need someone who will focus on the care and healthiness of my hair. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Does anyone know of a provider in the area who does adult autism assessments, bills insurance, and doesn't have a waitlist into next year? I've hit my out of pocket max and would love to get this done before that resets.

Looking for the best place to get a women’s haircut for $50. Apparently it’s hard to find. Help me out, please!

My wife needs a haircut and is constantly complaining about the price of women’s haircuts. Men’s haircuts aren’t cheap anymore either. Will you please recommend some women’s hair stylists for her. Cary preferred, but at this point willing to travel.

Home services price quotes

Hi everyone, as a first time homeowner in the Triangle who’s been in my home for almost 4 years, it has really amazed me at the range you get in quotes for home services (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.). Literally same job, same parts, and hundred to sometimes thousands of dollars apart.

And as someone who doesn’t work in the trades, I don’t always immediately know if I’m being taken advantage of. Yes I do my research ahead of time, I’ll even ask AI about the quote when I receive it, but it really made me wish there was a way to know for sure. So - I’m building it!

It’s called trianglepricebook.com and it collects verified (backed up by documentation) and unverified quotes directly from homeowners. It’s an anonymous, crowdsourced site that gets better the more people contribute. So take a look, let me know what you think, and if you have received any home services quotes it’s be super helpful if you could submit that info (I’ve made it very easy) to benefit all homeowners in our area!

Missed Connection: Sola Coffee (Friday morning 10/23)

We crossed paths at Sola Coffee yesterday morning (Friday, Oct 23rd) right around 7:00 AM. We caught each other's eye at the coffee and water station.

You were wearing brown pants and a brown sweater. I was the guy in the gray Patagonia jacket.

I really regretted not striking up a conversation with you right then and there. If you happen to see this and remember the moment, I’d love to get together and grab a proper coffee sometime.

Drop me a message and tell me a quick detail about what you were doing at the station so I know it's you.

Emergency dog fostering resources

I am looking for any emergency fostering options that might be available in the wider Durham area. My step mom is in critical condition in the ICU and she has three adult labs. We do not want to give them away or take them to a shelter because we want her to be welcomed by her dogs when she comes home.

Does anyone know of any temporary fostering options?

Dating advice in Raleigh NC

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m trying to put myself out there more and improve my dating life in Raleigh. I’m open to something casual or a serious relationship if I meet the right person.

I’m not a huge fan of relying only on dating apps, so I’d like to meet more women in person through social events, hobbies, bars, or mutual friends. I’m still using apps like Hinge and Bumble, though.

The hardest part for me is finding someone I genuinely click with, not just getting matches.

For those of you who are dating in Raleigh, where are you actually meeting women? Any bars, events, social groups, or activities you’d recommend? Also, are Hinge and Bumble decent around here, or is meeting people in person the better move?

I’m Male in my 20s/30s dating pool and would rather meet someone through shared interests and good conversation than spend every weekend at bars.

Would appreciate any real experiences or recommendations. Thanks!

Elementary Schools

I live in a weird little section of the triangle with a Raleigh address but in the county of Durham. It looks like they drew the county lines around my neighborhood. We have young children and are thinking about elementary school. The market isn’t ideal for moving right now into wake county but we would like our children to attend wake county schools as we are significantly closer to the nearby elementary school in wake county (2 miles and on the way to work) than the one we’d be assigned to in Durham (over 7 miles opposite direction). Does anyone have an experience with attempting or receiving an inter-district transfer? I’m sure it would be extremely unlikely to happen but I’d like to learn how things work and what options exist for elementary schooling
