Academic Advice As a student pursuing EE there’s no good reason to take a proof based mathematics course is there?

• Upvotes

I’m studying to become an EE and my college, as is the case with most EE curriculums as I understand, does not involve any proof based mathematics courses. So it would probably be interesting but overall pain with little gain to try and sneak in a proof based math course just to see it, right?

Career Help Just got interview for dream role in dream location but unsure how to proceed

• Upvotes

Currently 4 months into an entry level systems engineer role in defense. Just got an interview with another defense prime in my dream location (Colorado) for Wednesday. Currently located in the Midwest, and have been fighting ruthlessly to get out of here while I’m young and go somewhere different.

Suppose I get the offer. I’m currently bound by my offer letter to remain in my current role until June of next year, otherwise I’ll owe the total of my relocation and sign on bonus when I originally accepted the offer in August 2025. That total is $11,500. Once I cross the one year mark in my current role in June, I’ll only owe $2,000 which is half of the relocation.

Would it be possible to delay my start date until next June (I know, probably unlikely)? What else could be done in the event I get an offer?

I am a Junior Engineering Physics student at Tulane University. I am minoring/concentrating in mechanical and electrical engineering since thy dont have the majors. I have completed 2 internships so far. Plus a research lab position, and I work as a fabrication technician for the schools engineering workshop? I want to land a internship and hopefully a career in Aerospace, ive done about 196 applications but because my gpa is low (3.02), I feel like I have no shot. Am I just being super anxious? This is genuine btw im not like attention seeking or anything im just incredibly stressed and feel a lot of pressure about it. Here are the three resumes Ive been using.

Career Advice location-specific networking

hi all, senior [Spring 2027 grad] here, at early stages of after-grad job search. my partner of 3 years is currently on co-op at a cleantech startup near Boston [where he also goes to school] and he's been saying lately that he really likes the job and he'd want to stay if they give him a return offer. so with this in mind I want to find a job in the boston area too (for a bunch of reasons, mostly to be w him, but I also really like the area).

it seems to me there are plenty of engineering jobs over there, the only issue is like, how do I network? the impression I've got of finding jobs via networking is that it's kind of random, like you take whatever opportunities land your way based on your connections. I don't know how to approach the whole networking thing with the goal of moving to a specific area. what do you guys recommend?

[if it matters, i go to a school in WNY, which is also where my hometown is]

Homework Help Help on homework

Hi, I’m past midterms, and things, as usual, have gotten more complicated. I need some help with some questions, step by step. I can put up my work and you guys can correct me if you see any problems. I usually skip steps by accident, which causes problems at the end since the answer doesn’t match up and I don’t know where I went wrong.

Discussion Should I stop going to my lectures?

I’m first year and I just bombed my first calc midterm, barely passing. I didn’t think it was going to be so hard, since I did good in high school calc 1 and went to all the lectures. I probably could have studied more like I did my other midterms (haven’t been graded yet), but also I feel like I barely have any time. I spend all day going to lectures and then spend the rest of the time doing assignments that I never feel like I can do any extra practice.

I feel like some lectures, notably my calc class, are a waste of time and it would be more efficient to spend my time doing practice problems. The only thing is that in class online participation questions are worth 5% but that’s barely anything and I feel like my exams might improve way more than that. From experience is this the better option or should I still go and time manage better?

Career Advice Career path question

Hello I am a sophomore aerospace engineering student and have been talking to a marine recruiter about possibly participating in the plc program to become an officer in the marines. The mos I am looking at is either aircraft maintenance or aircraft supply. I would like to get into defense for a career after I graduate. For the plc program it would take up 6 weeks of my summers so I think that internships wouldn’t work. My question is would being a marine officer help me get into a higher management position along with my degree or would it just be better to get internships and stay out of the military. If it makes any difference I am also a member of my school’s Aiaa. Thanks

Discussion Trading bot with Antigravity

Hello Everyone.
I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on the last few weeks at my university, I’m studying software and network engineering.
I've built an algorithmic trading bot with Antigravity.
I haven't tested it with real money yet—it's on a demo account. And I think it's generated good profits. I haven't become a millionaire, nor do I expect to, but I think it can work for making a little money and turning a profit.
It has a Telegram bot that sends notifications for every trade it opens or closes. It runs 24/7, scanning the market every 30 seconds, connected to an Oracle VPS, and trades during New York and London market hours. It works with just 7 instruments, reads real-time news and breaking headlines, uses the macroeconomic calendar, and has take-profit and stop-loss protection. Here are some screenshots of Friday’s trades. I welcome any suggestions or feedback.

Career Advice What should I transfer to if I want to become an engineer?

Hi everyone! I’m 18 years old and currently a first-year student at Chechen State University (ChSU), majoring in Economics.
I’ve realized that economics isn’t really for me, and I’d like to become an engineer instead. Which major would be the best choice if I want to achieve that goal?
My university offers the following programs:
38.03.05 — Business Informatics
11.03.02 — Infocommunication Technologies and Communication Systems
10.03.01 — Information Security
01.03.01 — Mathematics
01.03.02 — Applied Mathematics and Computer Science
09.03.04 — Software Engineering
03.03.03 — Radiophysics
03.03.02 — Physics
Which of these would you recommend if I want to pursue an engineering career? I’d appreciate any advice, especially from people who have experience in these fields.
Thanks in advance!

Rant/Vent Does it get better?

I'm in year 3 out if 5 in chemical engineering.

I am sick of lecture, lab exam, repeat over and over again. I haven't done an actual project outside of gen eds since freshman year. I haven't built anything but basic python scripts. I don't know when, if ever, we'll actually learn to DO anything.

Academic Advice CS grad considering MSc Mechatronics and Robotics at Leeds, anyone done it?

Hi all, I'm a final year BSc Computer Science student looking at the MSc(Eng) Mechatronics and Robotics at the University of Leeds for 2027 entry.

Has anyone done this course coming from a CS background? It covers a lot that a CS degree doesn't, like electronics, control systems and mechanical design, so I'd love to hear which topics you struggled with most and whether there's anything worth learning beforehand to prepare. I'm also curious how the job prospects were after and what kind of roles you or your coursemates ended up in.

Also, has anyone already applied or got an offer for 2027/28? Would be good to know how long it took to hear back and what your background was.

Any other experiences or advice are welcome too. Thanks!

Hey, I am a Student of 12th pcm right now and is Exploring different types of Courses to purse but nothing is Fitting right. My father owns a construction company and that is going quite good so I was thinking to join that after 12th and pursue a Degree in Civil Engineering. but I have seen a lot of backlash for engineering as there are too many engineers and Convinced myself to Drop engineering plan and Go for something else I am thinking of doing something related to architecture or designing but can't find anything usefull or my type please suggest me what to do as I have no choices right now.

Career Advice Is it appropriate to email a company that I interned for and tell them I got a job offer from their competitor?

Senior EE student here graduating in the spring, had an internship at company A this past summer and I loved it, pay was great and I really enjoyed the people I worked with and the projects I worked on. During my exit interview they told me they would love to bring me back and to get in contact with them in February about getting a full time position. I went to my schools engineering career fair and had a brief conversation with company B who is their competitor and handed them my resume. They interviewed me the next day virtually and then scheduled a second round in person interview with me yesterday.

They verbally offered me the job in the interview and just sent me a formal offer letter. I have 2 weeks to make a decision. Is it appropriate to send an email to company A telling them I have an offer from company B and try and see if they’re willing to give me an offer quickly or should I just accept company B?

Project Help Chemical Engineers: Do You Understand the Equations Behind Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Plus?

Hello, fellow chemical engineers!

I am conducting a study to explore how well chemical engineers understand the scientific principles, mathematical equations, and computational methods used by specialized chemical engineering software, such as Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Plus, to solve engineering problems and simulate processes. I would greatly appreciate it if you could share your experiences and perspectives.

My main question is:

When you use software such as Aspen HYSYS or Aspen Plus to solve a chemical engineering problem or simulate an industrial process, how well do you understand the specific equations, mathematical relationships, and scientific principles the software uses to perform its calculations and obtain the results?

For example, suppose you use HYSYS to simulate a distillation column or a separator. The software provides you with information such as:

  • The flow rates and compositions of outlet streams;
  • The mole fractions of individual components in the liquid and vapor phases;
  • Stream temperatures and pressures;
  • The energy consumed or released by equipment;
  • And other parameters required to analyze process performance.

Do you know which equations and computational methods the software uses to calculate these results?

For instance, are you familiar with mass and energy balance equations, vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) relationships, thermodynamic models, the equilibrium-stage equations used in distillation columns, and the numerical methods employed to solve these equations?

Can you explain how these relationships are interconnected and how the software uses them to obtain the final results?

My more important question is:

If you were given the same problem or project that you had previously solved using HYSYS or Aspen Plus and were asked to solve it without using either of these software tools, would you be able to independently explain the solution methodology and carry out the necessary calculations?

I do not necessarily mean that you should be able to perform every complex, repetitive calculation manually or reproduce the results to the last decimal place.

What I really want to know is whether you understand which scientific principles, equations, and relationships are needed to solve the problem, what assumptions must be made, which material and energy balances must be formulated, and what steps must be followed to obtain the desired results.

In other words, can you understand the underlying logic of the software's calculations and, if necessary, explain how the problem could be solved without relying on the software itself?

For example, if you were given the results of a distillation column simulation, would you be able to explain which equations and algorithms were used to obtain those results? Could you identify the fundamental equations governing the process and explain how the software solves them simultaneously to arrive at the final solution?

Or do you generally rely on the software's results without having a detailed understanding of the calculations and methods behind them?

I would be particularly interested in hearing about your actual experiences, whether in academia or industry, and the types of projects you have worked on using these software tools.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my question. Your answers and insights would be extremely valuable to my research, and I sincerely appreciate your willingness to share your experiences and knowledge.
