Discussion Should I stop going to my lectures?

I’m first year and I just bombed my first calc midterm, barely passing. I didn’t think it was going to be so hard, since I did good in high school calc 1 and went to all the lectures. I probably could have studied more like I did my other midterms (haven’t been graded yet), but also I feel like I barely have any time. I spend all day going to lectures and then spend the rest of the time doing assignments that I never feel like I can do any extra practice.

I feel like some lectures, notably my calc class, are a waste of time and it would be more efficient to spend my time doing practice problems. The only thing is that in class online participation questions are worth 5% but that’s barely anything and I feel like my exams might improve way more than that. From experience is this the better option or should I still go and time manage better?

Career Help Just got interview for dream role in dream location but unsure how to proceed

Currently 4 months into an entry level systems engineer role in defense. Just got an interview with another defense prime in my dream location (Colorado) for Wednesday. Currently located in the Midwest, and have been fighting ruthlessly to get out of here while I’m young and go somewhere different.

Suppose I get the offer. I’m currently bound by my offer letter to remain in my current role until June of next year, otherwise I’ll owe the total of my relocation and sign on bonus when I originally accepted the offer in August 2025. That total is $11,500. Once I cross the one year mark in my current role in June, I’ll only owe $2,000 which is half of the relocation.

Would it be possible to delay my start date until next June (I know, probably unlikely)? What else could be done in the event I get an offer?

Career Advice Career path question

Hello I am a sophomore aerospace engineering student and have been talking to a marine recruiter about possibly participating in the plc program to become an officer in the marines. The mos I am looking at is either aircraft maintenance or aircraft supply. I would like to get into defense for a career after I graduate. For the plc program it would take up 6 weeks of my summers so I think that internships wouldn’t work. My question is would being a marine officer help me get into a higher management position along with my degree or would it just be better to get internships and stay out of the military. If it makes any difference I am also a member of my school’s Aiaa. Thanks

🛑🛑 Dear friends, could I ask you to cast a FREE vote for this LEGO Ideas project, created by a friend of mine who runs a genomics lab? The project is called "Biomedicine Institute" and can be found on the LEGO Ideas website. It has already received over 6,000 votes, but it needs 10,000 to become an official LEGO set. It's all free, it only takes a few seconds and it can help spread science even through LEGO. Thank you so much to everyone.

Career Advice What should I transfer to if I want to become an engineer?

Hi everyone! I’m 18 years old and currently a first-year student at Chechen State University (ChSU), majoring in Economics.
I’ve realized that economics isn’t really for me, and I’d like to become an engineer instead. Which major would be the best choice if I want to achieve that goal?
My university offers the following programs:
38.03.05 — Business Informatics
11.03.02 — Infocommunication Technologies and Communication Systems
10.03.01 — Information Security
01.03.01 — Mathematics
01.03.02 — Applied Mathematics and Computer Science
09.03.04 — Software Engineering
03.03.03 — Radiophysics
03.03.02 — Physics
Which of these would you recommend if I want to pursue an engineering career? I’d appreciate any advice, especially from people who have experience in these fields.
Thanks in advance!

Academic Advice Withdrawing from a class

I thought I’d come on here and ask what you guys would do in my situation since I’m really torn. I apologize in advance if this is long.

So I am in my fourth semester at cc for mech e, though this is my fourth semester this is also my first semester taking classes that all contribute to my degree, atleast I think so. And I need a 3.0 to transfer to my desired university. I am currently taking chem for engineers, calc 1, and intro to java. I took an intro to java course because it fulfills a requirement towards transferring but that requirement can also be filled by a number of other classes that is just what I chose.

With that being said, I am thinking of withdrawing from my intro to java course as I got a 25/100 on the midterm dropping my grade to a 73 if I get 100 on the rest of the assignments for the class and then get a 0 on the final I still pass the class with a C, but what I am asking is if that’s worth it?

Currently I have a 3.85 gpa, I am expected to get atleast a B in both calc 1 and chem for engineers. If I drop my intro to java course my gpa would be a 3.64, if i kept the intro to java course and accept the c my gpa would be a 3.51. I am just wondering if keeping the course and accepting the c is worth it considering it’s not a course that is actually needed for my degree.

Is a C in a class worth it if I technically don’t even need the class and can fulfill the requirement with another class another time?

I think what’s also making me question whether withdrawing the class is the right choice because the class ends in four weeks, if i withdraw now I would owe in financial aid.

The pros to withdrawing it would be that I can fully focus on chem and calc without being stressed about my csc class and that I wouldn’t be taking a class that I don’t really need. And I wouldn’t have to accept a C on my transcript for a side class and not even a main class. A con would be I would probably have to owe for withdrawing so late and I would be below a full time student.

The pros to keeping the class would be that it fulfills a requirement in some way and I wouldn’t owe anything financially. The cons would be that I would have a C on my transcript.

I am leaning towards keeping the class since it’s already four weeks til it ends and I still have a few more semesters at cc to raise my gpa if needed but I have never gotten a C so far and it just feels stupid to get a C in a class that isn’t even needed for my degree.

Any and all advice helps and I appreciate it if you read this far into my ramble.

Academic Advice I’m scared (read description)

Hello, right now I’m a high school senior applying to colleges for either Electrical and Computer Engineering or Mechanical engineering for a Bachelor’s Degree.I enjoy engineering since middle school and I believe that I would genuinely enjoy working in the engineering and technology industry because it's exciting and fun.  Bc of cookies and trackers or whatever a lot of my feed is about colleges and engineering. A lot of the videos and posts whether on YouTube day in the life or skits or job application charts thingys on Reddit I feel so anxious about going into the major. Everyone says that engineering is so life draining, you cry after every exam, you don't have time for life, you switch to business after freshman year. I want to think that it's just 50% propaganda and 50% accurate, but I want to hear from engineering students about their honest opinions.

Career Help Choosing GM vs. NASA Internship

Hi everyone, I'm a second year at a T20 engineering school studying Materials Science & Engineering. These past two summers, I've been interning at a materials research facility at NASA in my hometown. I was looking to move to a new internship but am having trouble letting go of the opportunity and prestige at NASA. My main goal is to get into applied research and graduate school.

I'll write some pros and cons of the GM internship.

Pros:
New experience and industry connections
More than 2x the pay + a housing stipend
Slightly more aligned with my current interests

Cons:
Paying for food; more in gas
Staying away from friends and family
Potentially losing connections at NASA and future publications

Any advice? I'm leaning toward taking it. I think I value the new experience and higher pay more than anything, but how detrimental is it to leave?

Academic Advice As a student pursuing EE there’s no good reason to take a proof based mathematics course is there?

I’m studying to become an EE and my college, as is the case with most EE curriculums as I understand, does not involve any proof based mathematics courses. So it would probably be interesting but overall pain with little gain to try and sneak in a proof based math course just to see it, right?

Discussion Trading bot with Antigravity

Hello Everyone.
I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on the last few weeks at my university, I’m studying software and network engineering.
I've built an algorithmic trading bot with Antigravity.
I haven't tested it with real money yet—it's on a demo account. And I think it's generated good profits. I haven't become a millionaire, nor do I expect to, but I think it can work for making a little money and turning a profit.
It has a Telegram bot that sends notifications for every trade it opens or closes. It runs 24/7, scanning the market every 30 seconds, connected to an Oracle VPS, and trades during New York and London market hours. It works with just 7 instruments, reads real-time news and breaking headlines, uses the macroeconomic calendar, and has take-profit and stop-loss protection. Here are some screenshots of Friday’s trades. I welcome any suggestions or feedback.

I am a Junior Engineering Physics student at Tulane University. I am minoring/concentrating in mechanical and electrical engineering since thy dont have the majors. I have completed 2 internships so far. Plus a research lab position, and I work as a fabrication technician for the schools engineering workshop? I want to land a internship and hopefully a career in Aerospace, ive done about 196 applications but because my gpa is low (3.02), I feel like I have no shot. Am I just being super anxious? This is genuine btw im not like attention seeking or anything im just incredibly stressed and feel a lot of pressure about it. Here are the three resumes Ive been using.

Career Advice Is it appropriate to email a company that I interned for and tell them I got a job offer from their competitor?

Senior EE student here graduating in the spring, had an internship at company A this past summer and I loved it, pay was great and I really enjoyed the people I worked with and the projects I worked on. During my exit interview they told me they would love to bring me back and to get in contact with them in February about getting a full time position. I went to my schools engineering career fair and had a brief conversation with company B who is their competitor and handed them my resume. They interviewed me the next day virtually and then scheduled a second round in person interview with me yesterday.

They verbally offered me the job in the interview and just sent me a formal offer letter. I have 2 weeks to make a decision. Is it appropriate to send an email to company A telling them I have an offer from company B and try and see if they’re willing to give me an offer quickly or should I just accept company B?

Rant/Vent I’m too stupid

I study so much. I do practice problems, attend all classes, do active recall, study week before, and DO EVERYTHING. But I still don’t get good marks. Yet, my classmates talk about studying 2-3 days, enjoying their weekends, and they do so well. I don’t understand. I’m so mad, mad at myself for being dumb. What is wrong with me? No amount of effort is enough. What do they do that I don’t? What effort do they put in that I don’t? I don’t know what to do.

Academic Advice Is it worth it to start a competition team?

Ello

I am a US Freshman EE student at small priv school (on full scholarship luckily). We only have FSAE but I got rejected sadly and now idk how I will get experience. Teaching myself CAD currently.

Since I got rejected from my schools only comp team FSAE I was wondering if I should start a competition team (either Lunar Rovers, Sub Challenge maybe Solar but it costs so much and I want to compete not js reach out to sponsors).

Thought my sister (who graduated college not same one tho) said it isnt a good idea as I am not the most social person nor do I have many friends who would join and I should just focus on studies.

Also if someone says "Focus on studying" I have too much time on my hands currently and want to learn real shit.

Anyways what do I do? I could try again for FSAE next yr (no guarantee I will get or start comp team or smth else). If I start team I wouldn't compete this yr as I would just make an MVP and prob try to get funding

If you are reading this pls comment so ik what yall think (it is free).

Discussion What is the hardest class you took?

• Upvotes

I’m a ChemE. I’ve taken pretty much all the classes generally considered the hardest ChemE courses.

Honestly, the hardest class I’ve taken was calc 2.

It was so hard compared to all the other ChemE courses I’ve taken that I now just say if you can pass calc 2 you can be an engineer lol

Truly, any professor can make any class however difficult they want.

Rant/Vent Time spent on school vs interests

I didn't really know how to word the title, I feel like there's so much that I want to learn, but can't really put a lot of time into that because school and grade upkeep takes a lot of my time. For example, I really want to learn more about coding, electronics, or 3D printing just to name a few. Or more about how thermodynamics is applied to sustainability. I'm really interested in sustainability. I have endless questions. I want to read books about these concepts, and find the answers to my questions. I am trying to upkeep my grades and general health such as sleep, social life, and gym. The courses I'm taking really only touch on these topics at a surface level but I want to go deeper into learning about these. When it's only a 16 week format, there really isn't much time to go deeper especially if you are taking 4-5 classes. I feel like I am not getting enough out of my education because of this. School is going too fast in my opinion, but I know that you can't just have endless classes. I feel like school is currently about getting an A rather than actually learning the material. I see a lot of really cool things that people make online, and I want to do the same, but I wonder how they have the time to sit down and learn it all. Im a mechE major, but I want to learn everything. Biomedical, chemical, software, aerospace engineering. I can't choose one, they are all so interesting, even if it's surface level for some of these I still want to learn about it. It's funny because I want to learn all of this yet I am exhausted from studying so much at school.
