Hey guys! Last month I've been building my dream desktop environment. I've been developing in Java and Rust doing boring things over 12 years, and I always wondered why cheap operative systems had to look like Windows 95.
I am running broke on my job and no company wants to take me so I am experimenting new things and building startups and these "dream" non-profit things I always wanted to make.
I built my open source free desktop environment for Linux with one simple purpose:
Why doing this?
If you want to give it a look:
https://github.com/ArkFlame/flamewm
(I am actually looking for recommendations/advice on improving the UI further. I think the current base is "fine" but with help, tips and advices I can get the current UI to look much better without more RAM usage, I saw a bunch of beautiful desktop designs here, and I would love for you guys to share the ones you want to see into FlameWM to achieve beautifulness without bloat)

I built it around this wallpaper, which I really liked.
A dual clock and a music player to go along with the taskbar.
Can you recommend any other widgets? I think I’ll add something for taking notes.

I've been working on a Windows customization app called Glass Desky. Basically wanted to see how much I could change the look of Windows without using a ton of RAM.
Here's what I've come up with so far. There are actually quite a few more features than what's shown in the screenshots, but these are some of my favorites.
I think I've run out of ideas for my own setup lol. Curious what you guys would come up with.
If anyone wants to mess around with it, it's at glassdesky.com. Would love to see your setups or hear what else I should add.

Hey everyone! I built Dynamic Edge, a Dynamic Island-style dock for Windows 10 and 11 using WinUI 3, the Windows App SDK, and .NET 10.
It brings media controls, synced lyrics, and quick tools into one compact interface. Music Radar listens to desktop audio and identifies what’s playing, then lets you open it in Spotify or search for it on YouTube, without using a microphone.
It also includes a searchable clipboard shelf, a timer and stopwatch, system volume controls, and Bluetooth/earbud battery indicators when available. You can switch between tabs using the mouse wheel or a touchpad gesture.
Version 3.0.0.0 is now available, with smoother animations and sharper edges, ambient album-art backgrounds, optional dot or icon navigation, Settings search, and Wavy Wiggle and Soundwave EQ progress styles.

I’d love to hear what you think and what you’d improve.

Everything here is built around "Notches": surfaces that can nest inside each other and know which edge they're on, so they cling to the left/right/top whenever a window is active. The top bar and the stats sidebar are inspired by Latte Dock from my KDE days, the sound controls are pavucontrol-style, and the dock curves along the bottom.
The visualisers aren't drawn by the shell. They come from WayVes, a separate app, and are passed in as GPU frames (DMA-BUF) with no copying. My Quickshell fork shows them as native QML items. It works on NVIDIA, including a muxless PRIME laptop.
I wrote the shell, the visualisers and the DMA-BUF rendering myself. I used AI for some bug hunting and a few UX parts; the details are in the repo's dev notes.
Built on a 2.5K screen and lightly tested at 1080p, so bug reports are welcome!
Details: - WM: Hyprland - Shell: Quickshell (custom fork, link below) - Visualisers: WayVes
Repos: - WayVes: https://github.com/Roonil/WayVes - Quickshell config: https://github.com/Roonil/WayVes-Shell - Quickshell fork, required to run the config: https://github.com/Roonil/quickshell

After 1 year on Linux, the customization is like an important thing to do on a clean installation, so this is my new minimal and very functional customization, hope everyone likes it and if I can improve something, let me know on the comments!
