Tulsa Events Please avoid Scare Tulsa
Scare Tulsa is an event for the Halloween season that is going on Fridays and Saturdays at Turkey Mountain. They're using AI flyers to advertise zombie paintball, a haunted maze, a haunted trail, and a haunted hayride.
First up, there is no haunted hayride. The hayride takes you from the bottom of the hill where the haunted trail spits out to back up the hill so it saves you a bit of a walk. There's nothing scary about it.
The trail is very dark, which definitely helps the scary factor but it is full of rocks and super easy ways to trip. There are supposed to be little lanterns we give you, but there is a collection point at the bottom of the hill (at the end) that management is supposed to run back up. They're not really doing that, so you're either going at it in the dark or we're asking people to keep their phones pointed at the ground so they don't blind the workers. I'm sure you can guess how well people listen to that.
We had a guest trip and hit their head and bleed all over the trail. They wound up being okay in the end, and management promised us a safety meeting. The workers are all for that, we don't want anyone hurt, ourselves or the guests.
The day comes for the meeting, and the only safety line was "you can break character if someone needs help". Which, duh. The workers are all cool and understanding, but the people running it don't give a fuck. We tried flagging him down to ask for more safety protocols, but he was "too busy". We tried asking them about the lantern situation, and the guy running it shrugged and said "we'll see if we can bring them back." Nothing was changed.
We asked for them to take a list of people who were CPR certified or any other format that could help guests, we asked for first aid kits. Management shrugged and said "they signed a waiver, people get hurt sometimes" and walked off.
We asked for them to supply some walkie talkies for the people marking wristbands and the people within the attractions, and they told us absolutely not. We've been trying to adjust how often we let groups go so you get the full experience; we don't want you to miss something because the actors haven't had time to reset. Usually this involves an actor running all the way to the front to let the wristband markers know it's getting too busy, can we please slow it down? The people marking wristbands try to pace groups, but management got irritated that we weren't moving people through fast enough, so they dropped the time.
There are many gushing reviews on Facebook (can't speak to anywhere else) that all came through at the exact same time, usually from accounts that had a friend or two. Management also asked the employees to leave a glowing review about the attraction.
There were a few reviews talking about how it wasn't scary, many highlighting the lack of decor and just not being scared of the actors. Management made sure to chastise the actors for not being scary enough but didn't take any responsibility for any of the other very valid complaints, though they will happily brag about selling out.
We're also unsure if we're going to get paid properly. There was a "mandatory" groupme chat that management doesn't listen to concerns about, and if you have an issue, they will ignore you. Some of the workers were sharing screenshots of texts from management talking about pay rates so that no one would be screwed over. People started asking management to confirm said rates and when we would be getting paid. They kept dodging questions and deleting screenshots, telling the workers to "let it go" which is insane for wanting to get paid for a job.
Supposedly, the workers were supposed to be able to use their name as a coupon code so people could save money, and then the worker would make $5 for each person using their code. At the end, whoever sold the most was supposed to get some sort of bonus. Multiple people reached out saying that their names didn't work so they never got a chance to make that money, and management said "well some people have done it successfully" and ignored any further requests for help.
We have had workers trampled, attacked, and had things thrown on them. There was someone who came through with a bag of coke and told some of the actors to "take it and kill themselves". We had people come through absolutely blitzed drunk. Management shrugged it all off.
Please don't support this. The workers are trying their best, but the people running it absolutely don't care about anything other than raking in cash. Financially, it's not really worth it. Please go somewhere else.
