PSA: SteamOS 3.9.5 breaks sleep on desktops with the MediaTek MT7927 Wi-Fi card (many ASUS X870/X870E boards). Cause + fix

**TL;DR:** If your PC wakes itself up a few seconds after going to sleep since the 3.9.5 update, and your motherboard has the MediaTek MT7927 Wi-Fi 7 card, disable the onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the BIOS. Sleep works again, and you lose nothing because that card doesn't work on 3.9.5 anyway.

My setup

- ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi (BIOS 1715)

- Radeon RX 7900-series GPU

- Wired Ethernet, USB Bluetooth dongle

- SteamOS 3.9.5 stable (kernel 7.2.7-valve2)

Symptom

After updating to 3.9.5, sleep stopped working. The screen turns off, then the PC comes back on by itself within about half a minute.

Cause

SteamOS 3.9.5 moved to Linux 7.2, which has drivers for the MT7927: `mt7925e` for Wi-Fi and `btusb`/`btmtk` for Bluetooth. But the chip also needs firmware files that the driver loads into it at startup, and the SteamOS firmware package (`linux-firmware-neptune` 20260910) doesn't include them. There is no `/usr/lib/firmware/mediatek/mt7927/` folder.

Here's what happens:

  1. At boot, the Wi-Fi driver can't find its firmware and the card fails to start. The driver stays attached to it anyway.
  2. When the PC goes to sleep, the driver tries to talk to the card, gets no answer and times out. The kernel cancels the suspend.
  3. SteamOS retries with the lighter s2idle sleep mode. That fails too: a USB device on the chipset controller that never responds (most likely the card's Bluetooth half) keeps the kernel busy, and it gives up after 20 seconds.
  4. The PC is back on.

My guess is that older SteamOS kernels had no driver for this card at all, so it never got in the way of sleep.

How to check if you have the same problem

Try to sleep once, then in Desktop Mode open Konsole and run:

journalctl -b -k | grep -E "mt7925e|failed to suspend|Freezing remaining"

If you see lines like these, it's the same issue (the `0b:00.0` address can be different on your board):

mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: Direct firmware load for mediatek/mt7927/WIFI_RAM_CODE_MT6639_2_1.bin failed with error -2

mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: hardware init failed

mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: PM: pci_pm_suspend(): mt7925_pci_suspend [mt7925e] returns -110

PM: Some devices failed to suspend, or early wake event detected

Freezing remaining freezable tasks failed after 20.008 seconds

Fix

In the BIOS, go to Advanced → Onboard Devices Configuration and disable **Wi-Fi Controller** and **Bluetooth Controller** (the names can differ a bit between boards). Save and reboot. Sleep works normally again.

If you need the onboard Wi-Fi

The Wi-Fi firmware has already been added to upstream linux-firmware, so hopefully a future SteamOS update ships it. The Bluetooth firmware isn't upstream yet. Until Valve ships the files, the BIOS switch is the simplest workaround.

Who's affected

The MT7927 (Filogic 380) is on a lot of recent AM5 boards, including many ASUS X870/X870E models like the ROG Crosshair X870E Hero and ROG Strix X870E-E. If `lspci | grep -i mt7927` shows something, this probably applies to you.

Hope this saves someone some time! Cheers

Decky Animated Screensaver: custom artwork collections for SteamOS Gaming Mode

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve adapted my Steam Animated Screensaver app into a Decky plugin for SteamOS Gaming Mode, so you can build and manage collections without switching to Desktop Mode.

Pick games and animated or static SteamGridDB artwork, add covers/logos, adjust framing per game, and choose original, 16:9 or 16:10. Order, shuffle, duration and transitions are configurable, with a preview before preparation and installation.

Steam handles playback, including offline once the artwork is prepared. Select the installed collection in Settings → Customization → Screensaver, then set the inactivity delay in Power settings.

It requires Decky Loader and a SteamGridDB API key, obtainable through the plugin or here.

Decky Animated Screensaver: https://github.com/Alyenax/Decky-Animated-Screensaver

If you run into problems, please open an issue on GitHub and include your device, SteamOS version and Decky version.

support SteamOS boot loop

Running SteamOS on separate SSD on my PC. Been running fine with no issues for months now. Randomly today I had been running in windows as some games do not operate on Steam yet and when I went to reboot and boot back into steam it is stuck on boot loop. I am unaware of any patches or changes today on the operating system to potentially have caused this. I know there was a update in the last day or two but I had run steam since then.

Behavior: I see mobo post screen, see the quick prompt to hit F11 to change boot order (steam OS is #1, so I do nothing) screen turns black and I expect it to start loading into steam (on other screen, I have two screens) and instead it just loops back to beginning and I see mobo post again.

I CAN hit F11 and boot into windows with no issue. I did verify that secure boot hadn't turned back on. I have not changed any system level configs recently so I am unaware of what caused the boot loop.

Questions: How do I recover? I suspect the bootloader is stuck on some thing and just needs to get past that. I did run a test on the nvme drive and no issues.

I'm on a AMD 9850x3d and a 9070xt so drivers shouldn't be an issue. Again, had zero issues for a while now running this way.

Still confused between using Bazzite or SteamOS

So hardware specs out of the way, 5800X CPU and 9070XT GPU.

I'm building a living room steam machine alternative and will only be using a controller to operate the PC. I've booted both OS's previously and the only real world difference I note is Bazzites long boot up time and the black screen OS tree screen that is a bit off putting.

Which should I actually be using considering my hardware? I'll never be plugging a mouse and keyboard in or doing any desktop stuff on it. Will performance be the same? Will SteamOS just boot nicer and faster and become the better option?

to add, I'll be using Flydigi or Gamesir controllers and primary games will be eFootball and Helldivers 2. I've read that some games don't run on Bazzite due to anti cheat compatibility issues. So SteamOS still seems the better option. I also prefer the cleaner boot.

I would like to maybe setup some emulation also but I don't think this is possible in SteamOS?

help wanted DIY steam machine advice

I want to build a steam machine like pc that can replace my ps5 as my living room gaming console because fuck Sony. However, I don’t really know where to start. I used to know a decent amount about gaming pc specs when I was I high school and considering building one but I never had the money to do so and have not thought about it in a long time. I want to build something small that can fit in my entertainment center where my ps5 is currently but it doesn’t have to be tiny considering the space fits my ps5 with plenty of extra room. I also want to install steamOS as it seems like this would give me the most console like experience. I don’t mind tinkering with settings and things like that and I don’t necessarily have a budget but don’t want to go too much more expensive than the current steam machine although given the state of things I’m sure that will be near impossible. If you could give me some suggestions on parts I should look at and that case to buy that would be much appreciated. Pretty much all I know is I should get an AMD graphics card because I guess Nividia doesn’t play nice with steamOS.

Built my own SteamOS PC!

I've been a long time PC gamer who switched to PS due to convinience and all the issues windows has.

Now with all the recent shit PS is upto and how good steam OS is decided to switch back!

I always wanted a 4K PC for the TV. Since valves steam machine isn't powerful enough ended up building my own for the first time! I just wish I didn't have to tinker stuff like HDMI CEC and bluetooth wake but they seem to be working.

Only issue I can't seem to figure out is turning on the PC when I turn on the controller even though I have a compatible BIOS.

R5 9600X

Asrock B850I Lightning

16GB Corsair RAM

RX 9070XT

Corsair SF 850

H2 Flow

Total was around $2000, parts bought only during sales

question OS Switch

Hi everyone!

For some reason, my Windows decided to strike (They wanted more money for their work hours :< ), and now I am looking for a new operating system.

Is a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (12 GB) with 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700K @ 3.60GHz (3.60 GHz) and 16 GB good for the OS?

Is it good as a primary OS with my specs?
How good is it for anything besides gaming like documents and work in general? (Looking into it a bit but wanna see if there is anything I missed.)

I've never switched my OS before, and I am new to this, so I wanna see if it would be a good fit. I did look into it and desktop looks fine but I did hear it might cause some problems with my graphics.

Sorry if I rambled a lil.

TL:DR: I am looking for a few opinions if Steam OS is good for work and that.

Reduced moonlight streaming performance after SteamOS 3.8.16 (steam deck user)

Hey all!

Big fan of this sub and of using Moonlight for streaming. I currently mainly use my Steam Deck to stream games from my host PC (using Vibepollo). For the most part, I can get my pipeline working pretty well, with little to know frames lost to network jitter. I understand that typically these particular losses are related to the pacing of frames between the host/client.

However, it seems that all of the SteamOS builds after 3.8.16 introduce jitter no matter what settings I change. Whenever I roll back to 3.8.16, the jitter stops. I would like to use some of the newer builds, but since I primarily stream when using the deck, I feel stuck on this build.

Has anybody else experienced this, or found a way to reduce this performance loss on 3.9? I've tried all that I can think of.

Thanks!

SteamOS Update Huge performance loss after installing Steam is 3.9.5 stable

I did the returnal benchmark last week before I downloaded 3.9 and I got 84 fps

I tried again after downloading 3.9 all same settings in returnal and I got 44 fps

This is custom steam os machine with rx 9070

Edit: It seems the steam os game resolution setting is overriding the in game resolution settings now, displaying it at 4k instead even though my in game setting shows 1440p I changed Steam os game setting to 1440p and did the test again and got 85 fps 1 fps higher than before the update, it didnt use to do this

I have it both in desktop and gaming mode. "kill 1766" is stopping it, but it respawns after restart. It wasn't there on 3.8. The narrator is disabled and it doesn't affect it.
