PSA: SteamOS 3.9.5 breaks sleep on desktops with the MediaTek MT7927 Wi-Fi card (many ASUS X870/X870E boards). Cause + fix
**TL;DR:** If your PC wakes itself up a few seconds after going to sleep since the 3.9.5 update, and your motherboard has the MediaTek MT7927 Wi-Fi 7 card, disable the onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the BIOS. Sleep works again, and you lose nothing because that card doesn't work on 3.9.5 anyway.
My setup
- ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi (BIOS 1715)
- Radeon RX 7900-series GPU
- Wired Ethernet, USB Bluetooth dongle
- SteamOS 3.9.5 stable (kernel 7.2.7-valve2)
Symptom
After updating to 3.9.5, sleep stopped working. The screen turns off, then the PC comes back on by itself within about half a minute.
Cause
SteamOS 3.9.5 moved to Linux 7.2, which has drivers for the MT7927: `mt7925e` for Wi-Fi and `btusb`/`btmtk` for Bluetooth. But the chip also needs firmware files that the driver loads into it at startup, and the SteamOS firmware package (`linux-firmware-neptune` 20260910) doesn't include them. There is no `/usr/lib/firmware/mediatek/mt7927/` folder.
Here's what happens:
- At boot, the Wi-Fi driver can't find its firmware and the card fails to start. The driver stays attached to it anyway.
- When the PC goes to sleep, the driver tries to talk to the card, gets no answer and times out. The kernel cancels the suspend.
- SteamOS retries with the lighter s2idle sleep mode. That fails too: a USB device on the chipset controller that never responds (most likely the card's Bluetooth half) keeps the kernel busy, and it gives up after 20 seconds.
- The PC is back on.
My guess is that older SteamOS kernels had no driver for this card at all, so it never got in the way of sleep.
How to check if you have the same problem
Try to sleep once, then in Desktop Mode open Konsole and run:
journalctl -b -k | grep -E "mt7925e|failed to suspend|Freezing remaining"
If you see lines like these, it's the same issue (the `0b:00.0` address can be different on your board):
mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: Direct firmware load for mediatek/mt7927/WIFI_RAM_CODE_MT6639_2_1.bin failed with error -2
mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: hardware init failed
mt7925e 0000:0b:00.0: PM: pci_pm_suspend(): mt7925_pci_suspend [mt7925e] returns -110
PM: Some devices failed to suspend, or early wake event detected
Freezing remaining freezable tasks failed after 20.008 seconds
Fix
In the BIOS, go to Advanced → Onboard Devices Configuration and disable **Wi-Fi Controller** and **Bluetooth Controller** (the names can differ a bit between boards). Save and reboot. Sleep works normally again.
If you need the onboard Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi firmware has already been added to upstream linux-firmware, so hopefully a future SteamOS update ships it. The Bluetooth firmware isn't upstream yet. Until Valve ships the files, the BIOS switch is the simplest workaround.
Who's affected
The MT7927 (Filogic 380) is on a lot of recent AM5 boards, including many ASUS X870/X870E models like the ROG Crosshair X870E Hero and ROG Strix X870E-E. If `lspci | grep -i mt7927` shows something, this probably applies to you.
Hope this saves someone some time! Cheers
