Discussion Clocks go back this weekend (EU October 25, most of the US and Canada November 1): how to adjust

Most of Europe turns the clocks back one hour on Sunday, October 25. Most of the US and Canada follow on Sunday, November 1.

Falling back is the easier change, but it still trips people up, especially early risers, parents of young kids, and anyone whose sleep is already fragile: your body clock now wakes you an hour early by the new time.

What tends to help:

  • Shift gradually. Over the three or four nights before, go to bed and get up 15 to 20 minutes later each day.
  • For the first few days, get bright light in the evening and go easy on very bright light first thing. That nudges your body clock later.
  • Keep your wake time steady on the weekend of the change instead of sleeping in.
  • Move kids' and pets' meals and bedtimes in 15-minute steps.
  • Skip long late-afternoon naps that week.

Most people settle in within a few days to a week. If you're still off after two weeks, the FAQ is a good next stop, or a chat with your doctor.

How does the time change hit you, and what works for you?

Discussion How can I sleep with no podcasts?

I'm having severe problems trying to sleep with no podcasts running, I have been listening to put myself quickly to sleep for so long and recently I started trying to cut it off, I didn't go cold turkey, I started listening to boring podcasts so I can put earbuds away and sleep, I tried to put a timer as well, and still none of that helped, so I decided to not listen anymore and just sleep and that wasn't fun at all, I stayed up until 4am until I gave up and put the podcast on, what can I do regrading this? Anyone been here?

Dreams & nightmares My nap tried to take me out

Silly me, I thought I could nap during my break. Oh boy was I wrong. I’ve been in and out of sleep for about an hour at work so I decided to take an early break and go nap in my car. I turn the heat on to warm my feet up because it getting real cold out. I recline my seat as far back as it will go and I quasi turn to my side and “dose” off. It might as well have been sleep paralysis. I start seeing people looking through my windows trying to break in, it feels like I’m moving but I’m so drowsy I can’t do shit. But when I can make up my mind to actually move, I have to take a deep breath in and I realize I’m actually waking up from sleep. So I was asleep this whole time? Fuck me! I turn to the other side, it’s only been 5 minutes. I turn the heater off, maybe the heat on my feet isn’t helping me sleep too well. I dose back off as immediately as I woke up. I can hear my fucking nerve waves (yes waves) move across my brain from left to right then through my whole body. Talk about a shiver, I can hear time aggressively running from one side of my body to another. I ignore, maybe it’s the nighttime that’s making me overly sensitive. I go back into sleep paralysis, another group of people come looking through my windows checking if I’m sleeping, casual conversation laughing. I’m like there’s no way this would happen twice in a row, I try talking to them but can’t move still, my hands are literally tucked under my armpits over my boobs inside the neckline of my scrubs (optimal sleeping position). Another deep breath in and I’m up, I still haven’t heard my alarm, is this how my sleep tonight is gonna be!? I shake it off and give it one last shot, literally “open my eyes” to a gun pointed at me and a shadowy figure in my backseat. Oh for Christ’s sake, am I being mugged, at midnight, near a nursing home? I try to focus, but the mouth of the gun retracts into my passenger door air vent, when I unfocus, it shrinks back into the gun close to my face. Did I take psychedelics, is there a spore out there, I think I napped enough and slept well last night before coming to work. I’ve had water and food within the last 2 hours, I don’t have nightmares lately unless I take melatonin to go to sleep which I rarely have to do because I’m already so exhausted from work. I just say fuck this and let whatever is happening happen, I even managed to think about masturbating to relieve whatever nerves were tensed up causing all this chaos, but I could feel my hands still fully tucked under my armpits and I was still “asleep”, just fully conscious. Fuck my life.

Advice Who is the 'The Don' of sleep knowledge.

Post image
3 Upvotes

I only get 5 to 5.5 hours of sleep a night.

Sometimes I wake up fresh(ish) - I am 50 years old, so I'm guessing freshness is a thing of the past anyway lol.

Sometimes I am tired.

I just think this 7-8 hours sleep thing is never going to be possible for me - and it's just causing me stress because I think I should be sleeping more.

Sometimes I get a solid 8 hours, but it's probably once every 8 weeks.

Last night, according to my Garmin, I had 4h 52 minutes of sleep.

1h 32 of deep
2h 19 of light
1h 10 of REM

Is that enough? It sounds like good-quality sleep to me.

Anyway, who is the best person to listen to about sleep?

I'm just not sold on the idea of 'we need 7-8 hours' because for me, it's just not possible but I am looking for more info about this.

Advice Best medication or supplement that helps you stay asleep throughout the night?

Hello,

I cannot stay asleep for the life of me. While I am not up ALL night long, I am constantly tossing and turning all night, I feel like I am "awake" while I am asleep because I am such a light sleeper. I fall asleep pretty decently, but I cannot go longer than 1.5 hours than briefly waking up. I do not believe I have sleep apnea; I do not snore, I haven't been tested. I think my issue is more hyperactive/anxiety brain. Olly gummies, magnesium glycinate, melatonin all seem to have the opposite effect on me and make more restless.

Advice Sleep issues since I was 8

Ok so I’ve had troubles with sleep since I was like 8. I’ve been taking melatonin since then but stopped in June because first of all, it still takes forever (like longer than it should I mean) which is super annoying, and if I don’t like shut my eyes and whatever at this exact right window of like ten mins the effects are gone. The biggest reason I stopped though was that it was making it IMPOSSIBLE to get up on time. It also made me super irritable and I had no patience and I would be fighting sleep in class and yea. The thing is, I still can’t manage to fall asleep before like midnight (I aim for 9:30 and for a while I was able to do that and then it was at ten and itll like shift between those two but anyways now it’s just like super late) and I need like genuinely at least ten hours to feel good and I have to wake up at 7. Also more importantly I guess, I still literally cannot wake up. I have alarms set every 5 minutes from 7:00-8:50 (ive tried to have more or have them earlier it’s just the same) and I’ve geneuibely just started tuning them out. I’ll wake up at 8:30 without having heard a single alarm. And even if I wake up at 8:30 like I fall asleep every thirty seconds genuinely. Also even if I get like genuinely 15 hours of sleep I’ll still be tired (this has Deadass happened before). Also, idk if this is something but even if I nap for like 20 mins at 2pm (which I have to genuinely fight not doing every day after school), I fully won’t be able to fall asleep until like 2 am sometimes even later. Oh also maybe I should say about the melatonin, so at 8 I was probably taking like 3mg and then 5, but then maybe at 10 but Idrk I started taking ten for a little bit but then fifteen for a while and then twenty for like a year and a half (sometimes even thirty). That was also sort of why I stopped because I heard that it stops your body from producing its own melatonin but google said that the effects of that should be gone by now so like bruh why can’t j sleep. Anyways sorry if this doesn’t make sense it’s 2am and I got like 5 hours of sleep lol. Gn:)

Discussion I'm in a pickle

Okay, to keep this concise:

  1. Event on Fri.

  2. Travelling afterwards at 3am, 2.5hrs away on train. Can sleep here.

  3. Able to rest/sleep 6am-12pm.

  4. Have to be creative/have an active mind on Saturday.

  5. Worried that I'll have no energy.

What is the most optimal sleep I could get from this situation? Does getting a super good night's sleep on Thursday mean that I can possibly go one day with shitty sleep and be normal? Should I take caffeine?

I need advice!

And I am unable to fall back asleep. Instead I cook something and scroll on my phone and the sleep starts hitting around 11am which is impossible to ignore :(

Previously I used to sleep at 6/7am and wake up at 3 or 4pm. I'm trying to fix it for the past 2 days

Advice I'm losing sleep and I need help

• Upvotes

So I've been having sleep problems for a long while now. It's usually because the dry cold air from my fan is making my nose and throat super dry which is a pain to wake up to. Now I know what you're saying, "just turn the fan off". Well I can't, since my bed is directly next to the heater in my bedroom which I have no control over (my landlord controls the heat) and I'm sharing my bed with my fiance. The combined body heat of my fiance and I, mixed with the heat from the heater, makes it too hot to sleep comfortably which is why we need the fan on. It's 2:30 am. I just want to go to sleep. But I can't. I can't get comfortable, I keep tossing and turning. I just need advice on what to do. Should I invest in a humidifier to help my throat stay moist? Would getting a humidifier make me even hotter in bed than I already am? I don't know what to do and I just want some relief

Dreams & nightmares lucid nighmare (???)

hello everyone!

f18 here, i'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to share this on, but i figured i'd give it a shot. the whole thing is really complicated to explain (tbf i myself am not quite sure what i had just experienced but oh well...) so whoever happens to be reading this, please bare with me. (looking back, if you do decide to leave half way, i don't blame you lol. it's a LOT)

it is currently 5am as i'm writing this and i am too scared to fall back asleep, even though i am very tired.

i fell asleep at around 1am and woke up at 3am after having the most horrifying nightmare ever. i would prefer not to go into detail on what i saw exactly because i don't want my post deleted, but it was very very graphic and disgusting things along with demon like faces and creatures.

the most terrifying thing about it was the fact that after some time i became aware that i'm dreaming so i guess you could call it a lucid nightmare, but shortly after becoming aware of it would either shift to a familiar place like my room, which for a second would make me think that i am awake, but then something else would happen (like a random creature appearing) and that would make me come to realize it's not over. i would also randomly lose control of my "dream self" as if i really was in a battle with them creatures lol.

a good example of this is when one "scene" was over, i would find myself back in my room and would get up to go tell my mom what just happened, then a scary looking face or figure would appear and block my way. i would try to run past it because i figured if i told my mom to wake me up, it would all be over but in reality i wasn't moving at all like i thought i was. (if that makes sense...) i tried shouting for her to come wake me up, but same thing again (as in "dream me" shouting from the top of her lungs, and "real me" probably laying in bed like a log)

after that all went down i would try more subtle movements to wake myself up, like slamming into the wall or punching myself awake and my "dream self" is doing exactly that, but again, "real me" isn't moving at all.

after a few cycles of this i somehow managed to wake up. it took some time to be able to move again and to get fully convinced that i am back in real life. (i glanced down at my hands multiple times because that usually helps me determine whether i am dreaming or not, whenever i become aware while dreaming) i get lucid dreams every now and then, but never this intense or scary.

what i am curious about:

-did any of you experience similar (kind of semi-lucid in a way) dreams?

-what can i do to snap out of it quickly and how can i be less terrified of sleeping after all this?😅

-is there a way to prevent these from occurring?

some info:

-i do not currently take sleep supplements, medication of any sort that could interfere with my sleep

-i do drink caffeine, but not regularly and usually not more than one can of hungarian-redbull-equivalent a day.

- i do not drink alcohol, nor use any drvgs

i really appreciate the help and the personal stories/experiences you might have to share with me and thank you for reading!

Advice I can’t sleep because I feel unsafe

I came back home to my mum's house almost two months ago after living abroad for years, something happened so I just had to come back even though I wasn't willing. I've had great sleep all my life till I came back. (Backstory, my mum was narcissist and horrible when I was a child) My sleep has been horrible since I came back, I moved into my sister's room a week and a half ago because she's not here and I slept great for a few days but then I'm back to struggling. I'm so sleep deprived, I feel like crying everyday. I feel so unsafe during the night time, any small sound outside or even inside the house makes me alert and then i get so scared because i think I'll get attacked so l lose sleep more and then when i get a little bit of sleep my mum wakes up and she's usually very loud when preparing herself for work. I feel like this area is not safe at all compared to the suburbs I lived in abroad. Any advice would be appreciated because I’m so tired of this, it’s affecting me both physically and mentally

Discussion Got little sleep last night, and after work took a long nap. Does that help for tomorrow?

I was tired at work all day, so afterwards I went home and took a 3 hour nap. I want to go to my local ACOTAR midnight release to get that book, but I also need to be at work tomorrow morning. Will the 3 hours help me feel less tired tomorrow, or is that more of a “catch up” for today? Should I just forget it and not go?

Advice Why can’t I sleep early and wake up refreshed?

I try to sleep early but if I do, I wake up so alert at like 1 or 2 in the morning and can’t sleep for like 3 hours and then go to sleep after that. So I try to sleep like at 10 but when I wake up naturally without an alarm at 6 am, I still feel groggy but still can’t go back to sleep. Has anyone gone through this issue before? If you did can you please tell me what you went through and how you were able to solve it please?

Advice Lifetime fan sleeper looking for upgrade suggestions

Nothing major, just looking for some recommendations. Wasn't sure if this was the right sub for this but I'm sure y'all will tell me if it ain't.

I sleep with a fan blowing basically right on me and have since childhood. I like it loud; prevents the unsleepy thoughts from getting a foothold. For about a year I've been using a Lasko air circulator, and it's very solid but the pitch is a little high and it still doesn't quite reach the volume level I'm aiming for.

Basically, I want something that'll absolutely drown the room in pink/brown noise. Doesn't have to be a normal fan, I'll take something borderline industrial. Digital noise machines ain't for me, so an actual air-mover is crucial.

If anyone here is a similar breed of weird and has already found their Goldilocks solution, fire away. And if there's a better sub for this question, lemme know.

Insomnia Yelling in my sleep

Hey everyone, I have insomnia and ptsd (others too) I have been waking my self up yelling just about every night. I’ve noticed I’ve done it a couple times a night. I also always wake up feeling overly tired, like I can’t wake up. Some mornings I wake up and turn my alarm clock off and have apparently been getting back in bed and not remembering doing this. It happens more Monday through Thursday (when I don’t work) Friday through Sunday it happens but not as much.

Does anyone have any advice or has this happened to anyone else? I made an appointment but that’s not until November 19th

Sleep apnea & snoring I think I have sleep apnea, but the sleep study consultation is 2 months from now. What are ways I can manage my severe tiredness now?

Hello! I’m a 20F. I’ve had problems with sleeping all the time during the day. No matter how much I sleep I am extremely tired. I am a college student and have had to drop classes because I keep sleeping through them and I have no time to study for them because I’m sleeping through most of the day. I don’t drive, and have been planning on getting my license, but I am so tired I do not think it’s safe to even practice driving most days.

I had a medical appointment and they didn’t seem to take me very seriously. They made me take a pregnancy test, even though this problem has been occurring for YEARS and I just got my period last week. I have to wait months for a consultation for the sleep study, but I still have so much of the semester left, and I’m really worried. I am unable to do anything I want to most of the time. I love outdoors stuff. But I am so tired I can’t. I have to cancel work, classes, hangouts, to sleep for hours. I even fall asleep during hangouts cause I just cant stay awake.

I think I have obstructive sleep apnea. I have trouble breathing, specifically when I’m sleeping I have really labored breathing and stop breathing.

Does anyone have any recommendations of things I can do in the meantime to manage this?

I also have a vitamin D deficiency which is definitely making my fatigue worse, I am taking a high dose of vitamins so I’m hoping over the next weeks it helps! I’ve started using nose strips too. Any ideas on what to do?

Insomnia Guys I'm prescribed Dextroamphetamine ER 20mg. Started a new warehouse job really physically taxing and yet because of the stimulant and the aniexty of doing a new physical job in the morning is causing bad insomnia, I've gotten maybe 6 hours of restless sleep in 4 days(yesterday maybe 1 or 2 hours.

I got three days off stopping dextroamphetamines cold turkey over the 3 days. Klonopin at 1mg to 2mg has brought no relief to sleep just aniexty, relief the dextroamphetamines are over powering weed, 7oh/kratom, Klonopin. Only thing it doesn't over power our antipsychotic (zepreza but I don't like taking that cause I over sleep, am tired and emotionally flat or heavy alcohol drinking.

Getting black out drunk is the only way I can sleep tonight.

My body is in full fight and flight mood. ,5 more hours of this shift. Gonna get something to eat. 5 more hours can't wait to get my health and sleep back in order and yes I'll be looking to change this job and cut back or completely cut of dextroamphetamines.

Disrupted sleep the last few nights. So I take short naps. Just woke after 7 minutes and feel like I’ve had an hour.

Anyone else get these wins.
