Showcase Walkably: a walkability map for 31 European countries using OpenStreetMap

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi r/openstreetmap!

I made Walkably, a map that gives a walkability score from 0 to 100 for any address in 31 European countries. It is free for anyone to use, with no ads, no cookies, and no sign-up.

The score uses streets, paths, and places from OpenStreetMap contributors under the ODbL. 60% of the score is the walk on real streets to eight daily needs, such as groceries, school, and public transport. The other 40% is street quality: traffic, noise where we have loaded a city noise map (Barcelona so far), summer shade, busy roads nearby, and slope.

Summer shade is an estimate from building heights and Copernicus Tree Cover Density 2018. Where a building has no height in OpenStreetMap, the map uses the EU's building height map (GHSL). Slope uses Mapterhorn terrain.

The map's look comes from Ildefons Cerdà's 1859 plan for the Eixample in Barcelona.

A shop, school, or path missing from OpenStreetMap can make a walk longer and lower the score nearby. If you see scores that look wrong in your area, press "Report a wrong score" on the map or tell me here.

**Google Maps offline** - probabilmente ce l'hai già.

**Organic Maps** - gratuito, senza account, senza pubblicità, completamente offline incluso ricerca e navigazione.

I eventually want to get all of my city’s downtown micromapped, though it’s kind of hard because on bing maps the buildings are so high they cover the footway areas, and map box has little detail because of the shadows the buildings cast

Vibe-coded HoldMyTrack: a free, open-source fog-of-war map for your GPS tracks, built on OSM

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi r/openstreetmap,

I've been building HoldMyTrack, a place to keep your walks, runs, rides, hikes and other journeys. It turns them into one map of everywhere you've been, plus a fog-of-war layer that clears where your tracks went. I'm showing it here first because nearly every layer of it is OpenStreetMap data.

Where OSM comes in

  • Basemap: a self-hosted Protomaps planet build, served from my own storage, so no load on the OSMF tile servers.
  • Trails and bike paths: drawn on top of the fog, so you can see which nearby paths you haven't walked or ridden yet.
  • Fog of War: zoomed out, it clears a whole country, then a state or region, once you have a track inside it. The boundaries are OSM's, by way of Overture.
  • Spots: playgrounds, dog parks, viewpoints, waterfalls, monuments and historic sites, imported from OSM with whatever tags they have.
  • Labels: in your language where OSM has it, with the local name underneath.

OSM attribution is drawn into the map and into every image you export, and the script that derives the boundaries is public.

Try it without an account: holdmytrack.com has a demo account you can open and click around in.

To use your own tracks, upload GPX, FIT or TCX files, up to 20 at a time, from any device or service export. Nothing comes in that you didn't pick. Your map is private, there's no feed or followers, and it can hide where your tracks start and end (see Private Locations).

It's free, with no ads and no paid tier, and it's funded by the people who use it. The code is MIT-licensed: github.com/HoldMyTrack/platform

Android app: Google Play (available for the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ukraine), iOS later.

What I'd love your help with:

  1. Spots: which tags or categories are missing, or which ones pull in junk? Right now it's a straight OSM extract with no hand-curation.
  2. Trails: does the rendering show the paths you'd actually want to explore, or do I need to look at more highway/surface tags?
  3. Giving back: HoldMyTrack doesn't contribute anything to OSM yet. Is there something useful it could do? For example, exporting traces for upload, or pointing out a Spot whose tags look wrong.

Happy to answer anything about the stack, the data or the licensing.

I turned 87 Finnish golf courses from OSM into a playable 3D game, and the map quality decides which courses make it in

I've built a free browser golf game, Finger Golf (https://fingergolf.app), where every course is a real Finnish one, built from OpenStreetMap plus the National Land Survey of Finland's elevation model and lidar point cloud for the trees. The game credits OSM contributors under the ODbL.

The build pipeline reads the course's golf=* features: golf=hole ways with ref and par (and handicap for the stroke index), golf=tee, golf=fairway, golf=green, golf=bunker, golf=water_hazard, golf=rough, plus natural=water and wood areas inside the course. The hole lines give the routing and the tee boxes come from the tee polygons, so a course only works when all 18 holes are numbered and have a green.

That makes OSM coverage the gate. Of the 267 golf courses tagged in Finland, 77 are in the game. 79 have some holes mapped but not a full set, 38 have exactly 9 holes mapped, and 72 have no holes at all, just the course area. A couple I wanted are stuck on small gaps: one course's back nine across a lake has no greens mapped, and Nordcenter's Fream course has 9 of its 18 holes.

If you map golf courses, the things that matter most for a build, in order: golf=hole ways from tee to pin with ref=* and par=*, a golf=green polygon per hole, tee boxes, then bunkers and water. Fairway outlines are nice to have.

Players can report a wrong feature from inside the game (a bunker in the wrong place, a missing pond) and I get the WGS84 point with a screenshot, which I use for per-course fixes. I don't push those edits to OSM automatically, but I'm happy to share them with anyone mapping the course.

Course pages with a map of each hole, if you want to see how your mapping comes out: https://fingergolf.app/courses/

Vibe-coded Built an open-source, ultra-fast geospatial search engine & PBF harvester for OSM using Meilisearch & Go (Geomilli)

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone! 👋

I've been tinkering a lot with OpenStreetMap data lately and wanted to build something lightweight, self-hostable, and blazingly fast for everyday search, autocomplete, and geocoding without the heavy resource footprint often associated with traditional setups.

The result is **Geomilli** — an open-source geospatial platform combining Go, Osmium, and Meilisearch to deliver sub-10ms search performance:

🔗 **GitHub:** https://github.com/obaid22192/geomilli

### 🛠️ What's inside:

  1. **`geomilli-harvester` (Streaming Ingestion Daemon)**

    * Ingests raw `.osm.pbf` extracts directly using `osmium-tool`.

    * Filters and normalizes OSM tags into 19 canonical taxonomy classes (Cities, Neighborhoods, Amenities, Transit, Tourism, etc.).

    * Enriches records with Wikidata and Wikipedia pageviews for natural popularity-based ranking.

    * Performs zero-downtime blue/green shadow index swaps into Meilisearch.

  2. **`geomilli-api` (High-Throughput Go REST API)**

    * Sub-10ms keystroke prefix autocomplete (`/v1/autocomplete`).

    * Full-text search with typo tolerance and geo-proximity bias (`/v1/search`).

    * Reverse geocoding (`/v1/reverse`), radial search (`/v1/nearby`), bounding box queries (`/v1/bbox`), and airport code lookups (`/v1/airports`).

    * Multilingual support and localized name fallback.

  3. **`geomilli-studio` (Developer UI)**

    * A lightweight MapLibre GL playground to inspect query results, test API calls, and monitor harvester jobs in real time.

  4. **🤖 Model Context Protocol (MCP) Support (Coming Next / In Progress)**

    * Bringing an official `geomilli-mcp` server so AI assistants (Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.) can query live OSM geospatial data and resolve locations natively.

---

Everything is fully open-source and spins up easily with `docker compose up`.

I’d love to get feedback from the OSM community — especially on tagging edge-cases, taxonomy mappings, or features you'd like to see. Feel free to star the repo, test it out on your local extracts, or open an issue!

World Explorer turns OSM data into a drivable 3D world anywhere on Earth: buildings with their heights, roads with lanes, bridges and tunnels, rail lines with trains, waterways, and street-level trees, lamps and signals pulled from Overpass for the streets around you. Place names, borders and landmark cards come from OSM too.

I'm testing my location based game that uses open street maps data(coming soon) and praxismapper. I was in the middle of the woods and saw the path end. I thought for sure this is shoddy data, but nope. The trail just abruptly cuts off.

It blows my mind that a volunteer took the time to map a random dead-end deep in the woods. Just wanted to say thanks to this community for enabling indie devs to build cool stuff!

I started sharing details on the web of my project, DriveForever, a couple of months ago and since then the vibe coders are out in force trying to replicate it (I've seen some post here, in fact). That's been a good motivator for me to get this thing out there.

My background, 20+ years software engineering experience, most of it in geospatial and remote sensing, with a couple of mobile games under my belt.

DriveForever will be a more full featured game when it comes out for Desktops, but the sandbox is a blast and makes it fun to just drop in and start exploring and works great for phones.

My hope is that players will be motivated to make updates to their cities in OSM to see the data reflected in the game, and if its a commercial success to find a way to contribute back to OSM directly and financially.

Would love to discuss the implementation if anyone is interested / curious / has questions. And if you know how I can go about starting a dialog on the contribution side of things, please let me know.

Vibe-coded Follow-up: my OSM destruction game now has daily Expeditions — this one is Prague

Post image
0 Upvotes

Five days ago I shared KAIJUMIETZ here, a browser game that turns OpenStreetMap data around any address into a destructible city level. Thanks for the great response — I used the next update to give the map data a more structured challenge loop.

There are now 3 Expeditions per day: fixed real-world locations generated from OSM data, each with a special condition such as fog, a 60-second limit, or military units appearing from the start.

The GIF shows a Prague Expedition with the new Expedition Cat and Summit Flag. After the flag lands, it claims the nearby area — buildings, tanks, helicopters and police included.

Playable in the browser, no account: https://kaijumietz.de/?lang=en

Which OSM location or unusually mapped place would make a good Expedition next?

Revamping the OSM in my company

Hi guys, I am new to creating tileServer . I recently took ownership of the map styling and optimization in my company. Although it is optimized for compute efficiency, I am not satisfied with its appearance of the tile. Is there an editor that is up-to-date, highly customizable, and widely used? I tried JOSM, but it seems quite dated, so I thought there must be something newer and better suited for styling.

Thanks

GeoDesk now supports fast incremental updates

Post image
16 Upvotes

GOLs are now updatable, so you can keep your local copy current with the latest changes to OpenStreetMap.

Quick refresher: A Geo-Object Library is a compact single-file database that holds a snapshot of OSM data. GOLs are a key part of the GeoDesk OSM Toolkit (SotM 2026 talk). They're easy to build and fast to query, and now you can keep them up to date with daily, hourly or even minutely change files, automatically downloaded from a replication server.

This feature is available in GeoDesk's GOL Tool 2.5 (download -- 100% free and open source).

You will need to build your initial GOL using option --waynode-ids (-w), which preserves node IDs even for nodes without tags. For example:

gol build germany germany-latest.osm.pbf -w

After that, you can update the GOL to the latest available version:

gol update germany

By default, this uses the replication server specified in the original PBF. The planet file and Geofabrik extracts already contain suitable replication URLs.

If your PBF doesn't have one, or you want to use a different service, you can provide an explicit URL. This is especially handy for the planet file, which defaults to minutely change files. If you're catching up on a longer period, it makes sense to switch to the hourly (or daily) change stream:

gol update planet https://planet.openstreetmap.org/replication/hour

On a modern midrange workstation, applying a day's worth of planet-wide changes takes about 5 minutes. This is considerably faster than the current workflow of patching the source PBF and rebuilding the GOL, which takes over an hour.

gol update also reduces the required disk space: Apart from the GOL itself (which in updatable form takes about 130 GB for the full planet), it only needs storage for the updated tiles, with no interim copies of the PBF data.

Updates for shorter intervals aren't as efficient yet. I'm working on optimizations that should bring hourly updates to under 30 seconds and make true minute-by-minute replication practical.

Current limitations

  • Write access is exclusive, so you cannot query a GOL while an update is in progress. This restriction will disappear in GOL 3.0, which supports SQLite-style multi-reader/single-writer concurrency.
  • Updates for very long periods on large datasets may run out of memory. As a conservative rule of thumb, you should have 750 MB of RAM to hold a day's worth of worldwide changes. Hence, if you're bringing a month-old planet up to date, you should have at least 20 GB of RAM available. I'm incorporating functionality that automatically processes updates in multiple stages if memory is tight.

As always, feedback is appreciated. Open a GitHub ticket or follow en.osm.town/@geodesk for updates ... on updates.

Question How can I add POIs from RapidID Overture places into OSM?

There are many places in my hometown that don't show up in OSM. I saw that the overture places layer in Rapid editor detects them quite well but I can't seem to be able to add them automatically to OSM (like you can do with buildings).

Do you have any suggestions?

Vibe-coded I’m building an offline AR survival map for people working and travelling in remote areas — would love honest feedback

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey all, I've been building Pinage Maps, an offline-first map app for tourists, rangers, miners and labourers who spend time out of signal.

Maps and boundaries
• Offline satellite maps you can download by region
• Drop pins with photos, record trails and see your breadcrumb path
• Draw zones as a circle or custom boundary, with the area shown in hectares
• Draw lines with distance and compass bearing, or sketch freehand
• Flag hazard and no-go zones
• Organise pins, zones and notes into projects for a job, site or trip

AR view
• Point your camera to see your pins and hazard zones over the real world, with distances
• Sun, moon and star paths overlaid on the sky, with moonrise times and moon phase

AI
• AI field assistant that uses Claude when you have signal and switches to an on-device Llama model when you're offline
• Plant and rock ID from a photo, with a confidence rating and safety warnings

Safety
• SOS (press and hold) for the local emergency number, with mesh and SMS
• Deadman switch that alerts others if you stop responding
• Check-in timer that texts your contacts your last position if you're not back by a set time
• Emergency card showing your position in lat/lon, degrees and grid reference to read out to 000

Groups and crews
• Create a profile and add members to private groups
• Share files, waypoints, pins, zones and notes with your group, so everyone in the party has the same map
• Field forms like Step Back 5x5, incident reports and day briefs that crew members can mark as read

Most of it works with no signal. The Claude assistant, check-in timer and group syncing need a connection.

It's still in development, and I'd really like to know:
• Would you actually use this? Who do you think it's most useful for?
• What feels unnecessary or confusing?
• What's missing that you'd need out in the field?

Screenshots below. Be honest, I can take it.

Vibe-coded but fun I turned OSM building data into a destructible city – a giant cat flattens any address you type in

Thumbnail gallery
111 Upvotes

Hi OSM folks! I built a free browser game on top of OpenStreetMap: enter any address, the game fetches the area (Nominatim + Overpass, cached server-side to go easy on the public servers) and turns building footprints into extruded 3D blocks.
building:levels / height decide how tall a building is and how many points it's worth, and tagged landmarks (e.g. Westminster Hall in the screenshot) give a bonus. Map data is credited in-game.
It's also a fun way to spot gaps in your neighbourhood's mapping – flat or missing buildings stand out immediately 😄
Play (free, no account, no tracking): https://kaijumietz.de/?lang=en
Happy to answer questions about the OSM → game pipeline!

I built a free map of Germany showing where you can get by bus and train in 30/60/120 minutes, using OSM data

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I built Pendelradius (https://pendelradius.de), a map that shows how far you get from any starting point in Germany within a given time by public transport. You pick a start (or tap the map), a departure time and a travel time, and the map draws the reachable area in bands of 15 minutes. Tap any spot and it shows the connection with lines and transfers.

How OSM is used:
- Base map: vector tiles from OpenFreeMap (OpenMapTiles schema, OSM data)
- Place names for the search and the "which towns can I reach" lists: OSM place=city/town/village, districts from place=suburb
- "Nearby" line: supermarket, pharmacy, doctor, kindergarten, school etc. read from the tiles, with walking or transit minutes from the start
- Federal states via Overpass for the 255 city pages (e.g. https://pendelradius.de/koeln)

Timetables come from GTFS (DELFI via gtfs.de), updated weekly. All routing runs in your browser (a Connection Scan Algorithm on preprocessed files), so there is no backend, no account, no cookies and no tracking.

One thing I learned the hard way: I first showed the nearest "swimming pool", and it turned out to be someone's private garden pond. leisure=swimming_pool includes private pools and the tiles carry no access tag, so I removed that category. If you know a clean way to get only public pools (or other POIs) without running my own Overpass extract, I'd love to hear it.

Known limits: Germany only, scheduled times without delays, and some regional bus data is currently missing upstream.

I built this as a student project with help from AI. Feedback on the map, the OSM attribution or anything else is very welcome!
