Yesterday I downloaded nobara linux n now want to learn how everything works, command lines n all

so im installing ubuntu now on my laptop beside windows(on a separate physical ssd not windows ssd) to try it(i tried it before but not that long) to see if i will use it or not.

is there anything i should expect to behave differently from windows?(beyond the obvious such as not installing drivers except maybe nvidia gpu driver. using terminal, and using package managers/flatpak not random files like exes . im aware appimages exist. i also know its not the default way)

I've been on Linux for about a year or so. I've tried a few distros, and due to study requirements, I need a Debian/Ubuntu-based distro. The thing is that I want something without much bloat and without Ubuntu's Snap system. I'm not a gamer or looking for anything too fancy.

I think Debian is a good option, but I don't like the idea of having really outdated packages. After looking around a bit, I found Debian Testing, but I don't know how unstable it is. I don't mind if something breaks once in a while, like it could happen in Arch, and I don't want stability above all—I want some modernity. So that's my question: can Debian Testing be a daily driver?????

Hello!

I am currently looking at my options from switching over from Windows 11 to Linux. I hear the main benefits are a lot less bloatware, allows for more user control, uses a lot less system resources, and many other things.

What I am currently looking to do on Linux is gaming, along with some productivity work (Canva, Slack) along with video recording.

Here are my system specs, as I know some distros are better for different hardware.

Motherboard: NZXT N7 Z790
Storage: Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB
RAM: Teamgroup T-Create 32GB DDR5-6000
Graphics: AMD RX 7800XT
Power Supply: be quiet! 12M 750W

I have heard that Pop!_OS is what I am looking for, but I wanted to ask for opinions from people who have had experience with Linux. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Arc Menu, Dash to Panel, Chrome, LibreOffice, VSCode, Steam, OBS Studio, InSync. All set.

Hey so I just received a new computer from my family wich came with an 8GB rtx 5060 card and since I had a 16GB 5060ti on my old desktop I’m considering using these two gpus at once. I know that it’s not really useful for gaming but that’s not what I mainly plan on using them for. What’s the best Linux distribution to go for in this case?

Hi, i was trying to change back to Windows with some chatgpt commands cause my usb didn't work with ventoy but when I rebooted my computer this pops up but it doesn't go away everytime i reboot my computer, how the hell do i fix this (I'm on pikaos, a debian distribution) P.S.: everytime i press enter the same message pops up

This is the message:

You're in emergency mode. After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, or "exit" to continue boot up.

Cannot Open access to console, the root account is locked. See sulogin(8) man page for more details

Press enter to continue.

Gonna buy a new ssd next month and was thinking of finally escaping windows. I have a hp elitebook 745 g6 and I tried linux mint on it before but it was such a hassle to just fix the aspect ratio of my screen (I couldn't fix it at the end even after researching through forums).
Long story short, I need a distro where I can do my university works (Coding, Writing etc.) but also some gaming. The games in question are pirated. I don't know how gaming works in linux distros, I've heard of wine and proton but still don't know how they work.
Would be really grateful if you could suggest a good distro to this beginner.

I really want to make the switch to Linux but I’m scared and overwhelmed

I guess it’s kind of normal. I’ve been on windows since I was a kid. I’ve taken my privacy much more seriously the last 2-3 years only.

Since 2-3 years ago I now self hosting almost everything I need (calorie tracker, media, Immich, password manager etc). I use truenas scale, which is beginner friendly but I use the shell from time to time, which is Linux based.

I just want to be able to handle my own data in the operating system I use every day as well. But I’m just so concerned over some thing.

Security most of all. I rely on windows defender today for example to “stay secure”. I play a couple of indie games I doubt is Linux compatible. I use a vpn all the time. I torrent things daily.

It just feels like such a steep learning curve and I feel like I’ll mess up everything when it comes to everything.

Any comforting words?

What distro does everyone recommend here?

Hi, everyone! Please help me choose a Linux distribution based on these criteria—or a few of them:

1. Low system resource usage

2. No issues with patches and updates

3. No issues with games

4. Can be customized if desired

5. No surveillance and low risk of getting infected online

6. Easy to use for everyday tasks

Thanks in advance =)

Hey guys, recently, I was thinking about adding linux to my pc, I have been using windows for my entire life, it's a good os, and I am planning to maintain it, but I really want to test my pc hardware(low end) with Linux, I have got a RX560 4Vram, a ryzen 5 5600g, and 16 gigas of ram(which Windows is consuming almost 12 gigas with zero major Programs open).

I want to know if it's going to be a good thing if I do that, I'll use it just for gaming or multitasking, also, I want to know if I'll be able to play my games that I donwloaded on steam, windows and xbox on my linux without needing to make a hundred of things.

Also, I have 1TB of memory, so space will not be a problem.

And I want to make some tests and Linux looks better than windows for that.

(Sorry if I used the wrong flair.)

Bro please

Hey everyone!

I have a 2017 MacBook with the following specifications:

Processor: 1.8 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

RAM: 8 GB DDR3 (1600 MHz)

Storage: 121 GB total, with around 100 GB available

I wanna become a soc analyst and hence I want to start learning skills on linux. I'm confused which linux should i use that'll be best for my MacBook. I asked chat gpt and it said I won't be able to run heavy labs on it so I want your help knowing whether it's right and if it's right then what should I do??

Hello!
I recently bought a ASUS ExpertBook P5 G2 P5605CAA, and found out that audio does not work. HDMI, Jack, etc work, not in-build laptop speakers.

I'm not sure what exactly broke and where to report.

I'm pretty sure this machine has RT721 + TAS2783 configuration.

I can provide more info if someone can help with this, thanks!

This is a cross post from the cachy reddit, I am attempting to auto-mount drives by editing my fstab and failing to get it to work.

Resolution: Since I am using EXT4 I needed to change my fstab entries to be more simple.
Example: UUID="1234456" /home/bob/Drives/Steam2TB ext4 defaults,nofail 0 0

Now id like some tips. I installed fastfetch with sudo. That’s all I knew how to do at the moment. What are some good tools to install for people wanting to learn Linux and programming? I’m already thinking of getting sublime text. After this post, I’m gonna try to do my own research.

i am thinking of switching from windows to linux once again.

i switched to cachyOS with kde plasma once before. my laptop has both igpu and a nvidia dgpu but the os was not able to detect the dgpu for some reason probably due to driver issue. the brightness slider wasnt working either. i spent hours trying to fix it but couldnt manage to do it properly. so my experience hasbeen pretty bad with cachyos.

so i want some distro suggestions which will work well dual gpu laptops, is user friendly and offers wide customisation options. thanks yall

Making the switch to Linux can feel exciting and intimidating at the same time. Maybe you're curious about having more control over your computer, want to breathe new life into an old laptop, or simply want to explore something beyond Windows. But then the questions start piling up: Which distro should you choose? Will your favorite apps work? What if something breaks and you have no idea how to fix it?

The good news is that you don't have to hate Windows to enjoy Linux, and you definitely don't need to understand everything before giving it a try. There are beginner-friendly distributions, helpful communities, and plenty of ways to experiment without immediately replacing your current operating system. Even an old laptop can become a great learning project or a useful little home server.

For those already using Linux, what advice would you give someone just starting out? And if you've recently made the switch, what was the biggest surprise, challenge, or improvement you noticed? I'd love to hear your experiences and help make the journey less intimidating for newcomers! 🐧

Im a Linux begginer, and i am looking for a distro that is not begginer friendly, since i think it would be better to learn with something hard, i want something very customizable and i heard about Gentoo, but i still dont know if i should use it or choose something else

I was planning for a while to switch back to linux after a getting a new laptop but i can't decide on which distro should i pick. Are there any recommendations for distros that are great for daily use and gaming but also begginer friendly? Last time i used linux i used Pop_Os
