Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
50 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

graphics/kernel/drivers If this rumor from Digital Foundry Is true, could It affect AMD’s open-source drivers in the long term?

Post image
106 Upvotes

To ensure that the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and SteamOS work seamlessly, Valve has hired and funded several developers focused on optimizing AMD’s graphics stack. Valve has also been one of the biggest contributors to improving AMD’s open-source drivers on Linux in recent years, benefiting Linux gaming in general.

Could this affect Valve’s long-term interest in improving AMD’s Linux drivers, or am I overthinking it?

steam/steam deck Why it keeps downloading

So I have three different games in Steam as shown above in the screenshot. So why some of them use different version of Steam Linux Runtime and why when I didn't play the game for a while, it always download the same runtime before the game start even though it already did? Is it normal or because of the forced compatibility settings that I've set before? Also, what are the difference between runtime version 1, 2 and 3.

graphics/kernel/drivers New Kraid shader compiler for Mali GPUs (Panfrost) lands in Mesa 27.0, with up to 39% higher FPS in some apps

The open source Panfrost/PanVK driver for Arm Mali GPUs is switching to a new shader compiler, Kraid, starting with Mesa 27.0. It covers Valhall (v9) and newer GPUs, like the Mali-G610 in RK3588 boards.

Write-up: https://www.collabora.com/news-and-blog/news-and-events/panfrost-is-now-using-kraid.html

To set expectations: most apps perform about the same or a few percent better, because mobile games are rarely shader-bound. Some see bigger jumps, though:

- Candy Crush Soda Saga: +39%

- Call of Duty Mobile: +18%

- GFXBench Aztec: +11%

tool/utility Future Testers Wanted for EAC v2 Readiness Checker

Hi all,

With Epic Games deciding to completely rewrite their AntiCheat and bring their library of games to Linux, I've realized the requirements for it are extremely steep. These requirements are on the same level of change that going from Windows 10 to Windows 11 was. The one thing I want to prevent is the same thing a lot of people were told when moving to Windows 11, "Just do a clean install". While this is an option, it's not a great User Experience in my opinion.

While EAC v2 is not yet ready, I've decided to get ahead of it a bit and start work on a program similar to WhyNotWin11 to help guide users. I have already reached out to Epic Games via their listed contact email on the announcement to try to get ahead of things regarding to how EAC v2 will be doing its own checks.

For everything else, I'm already gathering proof of concept scripts and will need a large subset of data (read: various machine configurations) to test the scripts on. These scripts will make no changes to your machine and never will. If you're interested in running these scripts and providing the debug data they collect to improve the checks, please let me know here.

Regards

R Maehl

tool/utility AMD Adrenalin equivalent?

Is there any software that do what Adrenalin does? Stuff like upgrade FSR to 4.0 and FG to 3.0, and recording gameplay and saving instant replays for Linux?

I use them a lot on Windows and really miss it on Linux.

tool/utility Mouse Trap: a simple KWin script to keep your cursor on one screen

Hello everyone! This is a very simple KWin script to solve something that has been bothering me when gaming on Plasma + Wayland: the cursor escaping onto another monitor when I move it to the edge of the screen.

Check out the project on GitHub: https://github.com/Vaithre/MouseTrap

Install it from the KDE Store: https://store.kde.org/p/2380379/

You can also get it through “Get New…” under “KWin Scripts” in your Plasma System Settings.

I mostly ran into this with grand strategy games, where moving the mouse to the screen edges is how you move the camera. I had been using gamescope for some games, but I wanted something simpler that I could toggle whenever I needed it, including outside of games.

Mouse Trap uses KWin's built-in functionality to keep the cursor on the current monitor. Once enabled, press Ctrl+Shift+L to keep the cursor on the current screen. Please feel free to try it out, share your thoughts, or report any problems you run into.

The script is under 100 lines of code, so it’s easy to read and understand if you’re curious!

AI disclaimer: AI use in this project is limited to identifying bugs and security issues, as well as researching KWin’s API. The code and the text in both this post and the GitHub repository are handwritten. I’m not against using AI to build a project as long as it’s properly supervised, but I understand the value of making these distinctions nowadays.

Seamless save syncing for games without Steam Cloud support? (Steam and non-Steam games)

So Steam game mode in SteamOS and Bazzite has got me pretty spoiled now where with the vast majority of my Steam games can just be played on my Steam Deck, then move to my living room PC or any other PC with Steam and my saves are synced and I'm ready to pick back up where I left off with basically no friction in a nice console like experience. The problem is if it's one of the few games in my Steam library that doesn't support Steam Cloud, or a game that's not even on Steam. I swap devices I'm playing on fairly regularly, so it's not a simple case of "just suck it up and manually move a save once a month or so".

Are there any good solutions for this? All my gaming PC devices are on Linux now (SteamOS/Bazzite/CachyOS). I wouldn't even mind something that had some initial upfront setup, but I just don't want to have to do a lot of setup each time a new game is added. It doesn't even necessarily have to be cloud based since I'd be fine with it just syncing to a local file share.

I'll list some options I've tried before and why I think they don't really work well for seamless save syncing.

  • Syncthing - It's been a while since I've tried this one, but unless things have changed it was too cumbersome for game syncing. You need to install and do initial setup on each device, then each time you add a new game you need to set up its save directory to be synced on each device.
  • Ludusavi - While this is specifically made for backing up and restoring game saves, it requires manual intervention. It's easier than manually copying saves, but not very seamless since after I finish playing a game I'd need to open Ludusavi to click to backup the save, then open when I go to play on a different device to 'restore' the save.

What I'm looking for is a mostly set-it-and-forget style solution. I know this would be difficult because that would basically rely on a maintained database of game save locations where probably none of them could reasonably be all encompassing, especially when you start accounting 'homebrew' things like all the recent decompilations/recompilations of old consoles games. Barring some magical does-it-all-with-no-setup solution, then I guess the next best thing would a tool that I just install on each device, then if I add a new game save location for a game (fake example: game - XYZ, save location - $home/.local/share/XYZ/saves) then it will sync that setting to all devices. That way say if I have 5 devices and need to add 10 new games to the save configuration syncing then I'm only setting it up 10 times (once per a game) instead of 50 times (once per game per device).

Any suggestions?

guide New Linux user trying FSR 3.1 and GameScope in RDR2

• Upvotes

Hi, I recently switched from Windows to Linux as my daily drive. I picked Fedora since it supports secure boot, and I can still boot into my Windows and play League of Legends (the only thing keeping me there). Other than that, it's been a smooth ride. This is not my first attempt but this time I did something different that I hadn't done those other times, I thought lets use my claude subscription to handle things for me and so I did and it's been insane how fast it fixes all the potential problems and installs my drivers and finds the settings I want quickly for me, although it might sound bad I've asked it to track every decision and command it runs in my machine in a private repo that I ask it to keep updated everytime so I have some kind of changelog of my machine but over all very smooth experience. I thought, "Well, why not let it install my game, Red Dead, and optimize it for me?" That's when I found out more about FSR and game scope; it searched for the recommended settings for my machine and gathered information from different community pages, and the result has been insane for me. I have a flashed RX 5700 -> RX 5700 XT. I could play Red Dead Redemption on it with decent quality at 1440p (sure it's upscaled) and hit 190! FPS at times, it's phenomenal. I've never seen my card hit these numbers, and to be honest, I'm happy with the quality of the game even though it's upscaled and I have fake frames. It's such a smooth experience, and my card has gotten a totally new life. I tried several other games and had the same experience everywhere. I thought I would make a video and record my gameplay and put it on YouTube so people can watch it and use the settings as well. If you have any questions, hit me up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivDFitbCoSY

This is the reasoning on how this was possible (AI response):

RDR2 does not support FSR 3.1. Out of the box it only has FSR 2 (added in a 2022 patch) and DLSS 2, and no frame generation at all. The secret sauce is a mod that fakes it.

  1. OptiScaler: the main trick

- It's a small DLL dropped into the game folder (winmm.dll, with the Wine override winmm=n,b).

- When the game calls its built-in FSR 2, OptiScaler intercepts that and runs FSR 3.1.4 instead, which is a better upscaler.

- It then adds FSR 3.1 frame generation on top: it hooks the game's frame output and inserts a generated frame between every two real ones. That roughly doubles the number on the counter.

- Frame generation only works in DirectX 12 mode, not Vulkan, so the game runs in DX12.

  1. Upscaling from a low internal resolution

- FSR 2 is set to Performance in the game, so it renders at only 1280x720, and FSR 3.1 rebuilds that to 2560x1440. That's the biggest real-fps gain.

  1. Smart settings

- Ultra textures, which cost almost nothing on an 8 GB card.

- Shadows and lighting on Medium, the most expensive settings.

- Volumetrics and GI on High, motion blur off, VSync off.

  1. The Linux side

- GE-Proton 11-11 with vkd3d-proton turns DX12 into Vulkan.

- RADV_QUEUE_DISABLE=compute avoids the RX 5700's GPU-hang bug.

- vulkan-1=b fixes OptiScaler crashing on Rockstar's old bundled Vulkan file.

- gamescope runs at native 1440p with no extra scaling.

- GameMode keeps the CPU at full speed.

tech support wanted Anyone with a Steam Deck willing to test my game? I don't have one myself

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'm making a game called Retro Empire, where you run a retro video game shop. I recently released a free demo on Steam, and there's a native Linux version too.

The problem is I don't own a Steam Deck, so I have no idea how well it actually runs on one.

If anyone here has a Deck and wants to give it a try, I'd love to know how it performs. Mainly FPS, stuttering, controls, or anything that feels off. If you can, tell me if you ran the native build or Proton.

Heads up: the first launch takes a while because it's compiling shaders, it's not frozen. After that it should load faster.

I'm trying to get everything working properly before release, so any feedback would help a lot.

The demo is on the store page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5295010/Retro_Empire/

Thanks!

graphics/kernel/drivers While playing, still images from a few moments ago appear constantly, please help.

• Upvotes

Hi, i've been trying to get any help for like 2 months now, but nobody seems to know how to fix it. In every game I play, every minute or so, a still image appears for like a second. It looks like a screenshot from the game and usually shows a menu, or a loading screen. It happens in most of the games I play, with very few exceptions (i think GTA 4 and ps2 emulators are the only ones). I have brand new 5070 and i'm using linux mint with all drivers updated. Does anyone knows what could i possibly do to fix it?

DIfferent protons and strange keyboard bug.

Im having a very strange problem and I would like to understand it out of sheer curiosity.

Infos of my setup which I believe are relevant:

OS: Bazzite-nvidia-stable

Region: Brazil.

Keyboard layout: ABNT2

Game: Guild Wars 2

Launcher: Lutris.

In portuguese, we have accents, for example "exceção" (áéíóú - âêô).

Guild wars 2 is a MMO with a written chat.

When I use proton experimental, keyboard works flawlessly.

When I use other protons (GE - CachyOS) accent keys either stop working completly, like they dont exist OR they create the accent immediatly before typing the letter (example: ~ ´ ^).

Since I hear these are branches/forks that are made uppon experimental, how the hell did the keyboard messed up and why?

benchmark how much does the anti-cheat stuff actually matter for your game library

i keep seeing people mention anti-cheat as a dealbreaker but i'm wondering if it's genuinely affecting most people's actual playtime or if it's more of a vocal thing. like are there specific games you wanted to play on linux that ended up being a no-go because of it?
