This is a shout out to the wonderful plugin for Dolphin called KFind. Why it is not installed by default on every KDE distro, I am not sure. If anyone has any ideas as to why this would be the case, do let me know. It can be run as it's own application, but its real value is its integration with KRunner and especially Dolphin. It's amazing how such a simple application can be so powerful. And I shake my head at forums who instantly recommend dropping to the command line to search for files or folders. I mean, yeah, that's impressive, but this is real world mother-in-law territory that make up the majority of computer users!
I think one of the most powerful features which I never used until I knew it existed was the ability to search by time constraints. For example, only search files touched in the last two days or two hours. If you haven't used it, give it a go. I think you'll really appreciate KDE all the more for it.
With the upgrade to Plasma 6.8, I have noticed a severe 3D performance degradation. My Superposition benchmark numbers went from 190ish fps to about 130ish fps. I have noticed several similar complaints. First my system info:
As you may have noticed, I am running an eGPU setup with a Radeon 7600XT as my gaming GPU however the display is connected to the iGPU via DisplayPort. To make matters worse, I have a Virtual monitor configured via amdgpu driver parameters to keep the eGPU from shutting down because a display is not connected.
This is NOT a bug report or anything, I am just putting here my observations on how I got 90% of my previous performance (Plasma 6.7.5) back so people can do the same until the bugs are identified and patched.
System Settings / Display & Monitor -> Display configuration
The main culprit is the setting named Color accuracy:
Setting this one to "Prefer efficiency" increased my fps from 130ish to 150-155. This setting is the main culprit. Setting it to "Prefer color accuracy" will erase also the gains from disabling compositing effects below.
System Settings / Window management -> Desktop Effects
DISABLE all effects. This disables most of the compositing going on and this added another 20fps so I went from about 150-155ish (after the Color accuracy change) to about 175ish.
I have seen some reports about setting the variable KWIN_DRM_USE_COLOR_PIPELINE=1, this does nothing in my case. My primary card is already set by the system to the eGPU:
I did experiment with KWIN_DRM_DEVICES but that obviously did not do anything. Now the only remaining issue for me is that the displaying iGPU is still presented to the programs so f.e. Superposition will give me a memory warning (I have 512MB of memory allocated in UEFI) which can break some games. If anybody has a hint how to change that (short of connecting the display to the eGPU) do let me know.
I am aware there's a color pipeline handling fix ready for 6.8.2 but that will only help with part of the performance degradation, the compositing part will still remain.
If anybody has a clue how to disable compositing for fullscreen applications do let me know. I tried searching for the answer but that gave me no usable solutions. Oh, I am using DRI_PRIME variable to redirect the rendering to the eGPU before starting games/benchmarks. Maybe that is wrong now with X11 gone but it still seems to work (or I am missing again something).
I've been tinkering with a custom start menu widget for Plasma and finally got it to a point where I'm happy enough to show it off. It's been a fun little project and I figured this is the best place to get honest opinions.
A few things I'd love to hear from you:
What would you change or add? Anything that feels missing or just doesn't work for your workflow?
Does it fit the KDE/Plasma look and feel, or does it feel out of place?
Should I push it publicly (GitHub) so people can actually use and test it? Or is it not quite there yet?
I'm not a pro dev by any means, so please be gentle but honest — I'd rather hear what's wrong now than later. If there's enough interest I'll clean it up and release it properly.
Screenshots attached (apologies for the messy desktop in advance).
Does anyone know if weyland based Krdp will support log in pages for remote connections or is there a weyland alternative that allows this fuctionality. Worried about the dropping of x11 and dont really want a loginless machine that i need to leave open when im away from it.
I am absolutely loving my Fedora 44 KDE setup but I have had 1 issue. VRR on my main 1440p monitor will not show up in plasma settings and using kscreen-doctor it shows as incapable, despite the monitor having VRR and having it turned on. My main monitor is 1440p 235hz (200 without DP OC and yes I've tried turning that off) and connected via DP. My 2nd monitor is 1080 and that shows VRR support fine but only my main will not. I had this issue before on CachyOS KDE and then it went away on Nobara, but now on Fedora it is back. Anyone know what the issue is? attached is my monitor settings, my system info and my rice too lol.
Edit: i know it says the monitor models but they are not as advertised to be clear they are the same but instead of HKC OVERSEAS they're KOORUI
I noticed that a bunch of KDE's apps on Flathub are stuck on the 26.04.3 release with the 6.10 runtime. I've actually switched several of my KDE Flatpaks to the Fedora Flatpak repo because those are more up to date than what's on Flathub.
Did something happen that's caused the updates on these apps to stall out for this long?
I have no idea how to create a theme. What do I need to learn, what tools do I need to install? Is there any material I can follow or something like that?
I run my displays through a RX580 and render on a B580. This worked on Windows after some fiddling, and it allowed me to run interlaced resolutions and use the more powerful GPU at the same time. Not only can I not figure out how to output 960i (honestly I've given up for now), I can not for the life of me get the system to use the Intel card. I tried Mesa commands and launch options and I have tried DRI_PRIME 1. Doesn't want to work.
I got a bigger monitor for dirt cheap and hooked it up with my smaller one in a dual setup. They both run the same resolution, so natively everything is just bigger on the new display. I tried to compensate that by setting the scaling factor to 85%, which aligns the proportions with the smaller display, so bigger display = more workspace room.
Fractional scaling always have been buggy on Linux, but with the progress of wayland the past years, the support seems much better and more and more applications adjust to it. So I was really wondering why the kde applications are rendering blurry text on my display.. for example in kate:
left 27" 2k 100% (sharp), right 32" 2k 85% (blurry)
I tried to debug it with codex and we found a workaround, you can find a summary below. TL;DR seems to be some QT bug, not allowing fractional scaling below 100%, or at least not on my system. I also didnt found much input on it and no real workaround, seems to be quite a niche monitor setup then..?
The problem around fractional scaling in Linux is still complex for me. Implementing and maintaining a patched QT version to make it work on my system isnt really my goal. My next approach would be to ditch kde and to avoid qt based apps. But then on the other hand, i would need to find a distro/desktop environment and apps that properly support it and to not run into the same (or other) issues.
Is this a known problem or maybe just a misconfig on my installed system or something else? Maybe someone with a similar setup can give feedback or recommendations if they got a nice solution. Im techy and also open to distro hop or other DE, maybe these compositor based DE have better support, like hyperland/wayfire/Cosmic?
Codex summary:
### System
- OS/session: EndeavourOS, KDE Plasma Wayland.
- Plasma: KWin 6.8.1-2, plasma-workspace 6.8.1-1.
- Qt: qt6-base 6.12.0-3, qt6-wayland 6.12.0-1.
- Konsole: 26.08.2-1.
- Displays: 27″ 2560×1440 at 100%; 32″ 2560×1440 at 85%
### Problem
At 85% scaling, kde applications like Kate, Konsole and System Settings look blurry; Other apps like Firefox or Steam look sharp. On the smaller 100% scaled monitor everything remains sharp.
VS Code also had undersized windows and incorrect mouse mapping. An Electron/Wayland launch workaround resolved that separately. Related VS Code report (https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/311247).
### Findings
- Plasma correctly requests 0.85 through Wayland’s fractional-scale protocol.
- Stock Qt clamps its rendering scale to at least 1.0. Logs confirmed preferred_scale(102)—102/120 = 0.85—while Qt reported windowDPR=1.0.
- Qt consequently supplies a 100%-sized buffer that the compositor shrinks. Upstream clamp (https://github.com/qt/qtbase/blob/dev/src/plugins/platforms/wayland/qwaylandwindow.cpp#L1433-L1440).
### Existing reports/work
- Matching symptoms: Below-100% blur, explicitly including 85% (https://discuss.kde.org/t/scaling-bellow-100-is-still-blurry-under-wayland/18740).
- Related, distinct issues: KDE font-hinting report 492918 (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=492918), linked to QTBUG-128874.
- Related patch work: Qt fractional-scaling discussion (https://lists.qt-project.org/pipermail/development/2026-August/047395.html), Telegram downstream patch collection (https://github.com/desktop-app/patches).
- No equivalent clamp-removal fix was verified. Qt tracker/review search access was incomplete.
### Successful experiment
Built the matching Arch Qt package with an opt-in patch allowing positive fractional scales below 1.0, then loaded the extracted runtime through a per-application wrapper.
- Probe confirmed DPR 0.85 on 32", 1.0 on 27", preserved workspace and correctly positioned test clicks.
- Kate and Konsole visibly became sharper, confirmed by the user.
- System Settings/Plasma-wide behavior remains unverified.
Hi guys, when I login into kde plasma wayland, my desktop all works fine, animated wallpaper works, apps work, task bar work, all of it. But after around 3 seconds it all freezes, except cursor and terminal and alt space bar, which can still be used to open apps. If I opened app with task bar, after it freeze, it just doesn't open. Until after around 20 seconds then the apps open. Freeze also completely stops the wallpaper. I have tried to check logs with CHATGPT but the logs don't list anything useful. And it says that whatever is crashing it
I tried it in Hyperland but it doesn't have these issues. Also a friend of mine on Endeavor has the same issue. This issue to me started around when plasma 6.8 came out. Nothing I did fixed it either, I also tried lts kernel and that also have the same issues. It doesn't affect perfoance tho and after this is done there is no further irrigularities
Anyone have the same issue? Anyone have a fix? It's annoying to wait 2p seconds to use my pc.
Edit: I'm on a full AMD system on CachyOS, my friend is on a I think Intel/NVIDIA LAPTOP with Endeavor
I use a fractional scaling of 140% for my Framework 13 Ryzen laptop and the "Switch to Window Below, Left, etc." shortcuts don't behave as expected. Sometimes the Switch to Right goes left. Sometimes the Switch to Left just toggles back and forth between open windows.
Any suggestions on a fix or workaround are welcomed. Thanks a bunch!
