My Jim Green sizing journey has been frustrating, and I’m hoping to get some feedback from those who’ve broken in their Barefoot African Rangers.
For reference, I wear a size 11 in the Altra Lone Peak 9+, and they fit perfectly. I love the durability, leather construction, and replaceable soles of Jim Greens because my Altras tend to fall apart after a few months, and I can’t resole them.
I originally preordered the AnatomX African Rangers in size 11. After wearing them for a month, my feet were swimming in them.
I then ordered the Barefoot African Rangers in size 11 and wore them for four months. Unfortunately, they also felt sloppy. Too much overall volume, difficulty anchoring my midfoot, and excessive lateral movement in the heel. My feet would slide forward, causing my toes to hit the front despite having plenty of length.
Last week, I decided to try the Barefoot African Rangers in size 10.5. The difference in fit is remarkable. Standing in them, they genuinely feel like custom-made boots. My heel, arch, and midfoot feel securely held, and the overall volume is just right. Everything that felt sloppy in the 11s feels dialed in with the 10.5s. The only issue is length. My big toe presses against the front of the boot while walking.
One thing I’ve noticed is that my size 11s developed a pronounced heel pocket over four months of wear. When I put a size 11 on one foot and a 10.5 on the other, I can feel how much farther back my heel seats in the broken-in 11.
I’m now on day five of wearing the 10.5s, and I’m wondering how much additional usable toe clearance I can realistically expect as the leather softens, stretches, and molds around my heel.
Has anyone successfully gained a few millimeters of toe clearance through breaking in or stretching their Barefoot African Rangers?
I feel like I’m between a 10.5 and 11 in length, but the 10.5 is unquestionably the better fit everywhere else. I’d really like to make this size work without sacrificing the secure fit I’ve finally found.
