Any local(ish) whippet owners?

I lost my Italian Greyhound to cancer recently, and I'm interested in getting a Whippet in the next year or so. Ideally, I want to adopt via WRAP (national rescue org) or take in a surrendered whippet from a reputable breeder.

However, I'm concerned about how my allergies will react given that whippets are larger than IGs and, from what I've gathered online, have a slightly longer coat. So, I want to be diligent and test that out before I go down the path of adopting a dog.

I'm curious if there are any whippet owners in the area who would be interested in meeting at a dog park on a weeknight or weekend before the snow gets here. Also, considering how recognizable whippets/IGs are, feel free to message me directly if you're more comfortable with that.

Here are a few pics of my little guy: https://imgur.com/a/RlcTJkE

I need help with my car :(

• Upvotes

My transmission is kinda slipping on my car, it’s on the older side but I can’t really afford a new car right now or get a lot of expensive work done. Does anyone know any shops in the area or people that could help? I’m on a budget but I’m happy to negotiate. Thank you so so much!!

Cortland NY Advocacy

Hello,
I know this is a long shot, but I am asking for help. I am wheelchair bound and rely heavily on the bus service in Cortland to get everywhere, including my chemotherapy appointments. On a fixed income the $1 bus service has been nothing short of a saving grace in my budget. I am only allowed a certain number of medical transports with my healthcare, so I rely on the bus to bridge those gaps. This has worked fine for me as I don’t want much and don’t need much, allowing me to narrowly make ends meet within my budget. But over the last two months, Centro has cancelled the buses I’ve needed multiple times a week, causing me to be without food for the night at times, and even missing nearly 10 chemotherapy appointments as medical taxis will only allow so many emergency short notice calls, or so I’ve been told. I’m asking for someone to go to the public hearing this Wednesday, October 28th at 4pm at 60 Central Avenue, The County Office Building, to advocate on my (and all bus riders) behalf as I wanted to attend but I cannot miss any more chemotherapy as the efficacy is surely being affected by my inconsistent treatment, and I’ve already scheduled my medical transport. If needed, I am willing to pay, I’ve already amassed a bit of credit card debt from this bus company’s failures, so I do not mind scrounging up what I can to pay an advocate and supplement my bills with more charged this month. If anyone can help me, please PM me.

Mighty Mickie Quinn to MC Battle of the Dad Bands

Visionary events producer and seasoned mistress of ceremonies Mickie Quinn will take charge of the inaugural Battle of the Dad Bands charitable benefit at 6 p.m., Friday, November 6, at the Hangar Theatre, Ithaca.

“The Mighty Mickie Quinn” is a visionary event producer who conjures connections between artists and the audience. She is the mistress of ceremonies for a variety of performance events, including Trampoline storytelling, Whiskey Tango Sideshow burlesque, GrassRoots music festival, and any variety of stages that need a touch of class with a side of sass. She loves to lift spirits while celebrating her community.

“Upon being asked to host this event, I was 100 percent in,” Quinns said. “It intersects all the things I love - music, community, uplifting performers, and rockin' dads (of all genders and ages!). I am hoping to hone a well-curated selection of dad jokes for the occasion almost as much as I look forward to raising funds for any of these fantastic organizations.”

Quinn's skills will be put to good use orchestrating eight bands playing 15-minute sets in support of their chosen charity at this first "Rock and Roll Challenge for Charity."  Audience voting will select the winning band and their cause – first place will garner half of the prize money, second place one-third, and third place one-sixth.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through the Hangar Theatre website at https://hangartheatre.org/event/battle-of-the-dad-bands.

The event is made possible through the support of The Guthrie Clinic, Centralus Health, BSI Production, The Hangar Theatre, and Ithaca Guitar Works.

“Dad Band” is a gender-neutral term for an amateur group of musicians who get together to play their favorite music for the love of rock and roll in someone’s basement, neighborhood fests, and their friends’ parties.

[OC] You are so blessed to have this view from McGraw Tower. Love from Madison, WI

I went hiking in the Finger Lakes and Catskills, anyway after Watkins Glen and Treman State Parks I went to Ithaca to see Wells Falls, get a bite to eat, and check out the fancy buildings at Cornell. I got lucky and was able to listen to the carillon players (glad they gave me earplugs!) and this amazing sunset view. We have UW-Madison and a carillon tower on University Hill, but it is NOTHING compared to the fall foliage, skies, and Cayuga Lake you guys have.

bad food experiences at xian street food?

I just threw up last night after ordering the lamb biangbiang from xian street food and I told my friend and he says he's had the exact same experience after the exact same order. I was wondering if anyone else has had a bad experience? I really love their food so I want to figure out if this was a super rare coincidence or a valid concern. I've only been there around 5 times myself (previously without any issues) and this was my first time trying the biangbiang so I feel like my personal sample size is a bit small 😓 Thank u!!

Hi,
I’ve been living in town for years, but have never figured out where the gays are at. I’m a bi young man looking for spontaneous queer spaces. Anyone got any recommendations of where I could go? Especially on a weeknight?

I made a free guide to day trips from Ithaca (94 places within ~3 hours, no ads)

I'm a student here and kept a running list of places to go when you need to get out of town for a day. It turned into a website, so I'm sharing it in case it's useful to anyone else (link in the comments).

What's on it: - 94 places sorted into gorges, hikes, legal swim spots, wineries/cideries/breweries, food, small towns, rainy-day stuff, scenic drives, scenic photo spots (where to stand + best light), and an "off the grid" section (Six Mile Creek ruins, the old Seneca Army Depot, Keuka Outlet mill ruins, Centralia, etc.) - Every card has drive time from the Commons, what it costs (parking fees included), what's actually worth it, and a Google/Apple Maps directions button - 7 ready-made days (classic Ithaca gorges, Seneca wine loop, around Cayuga, a rainy day in Corning, a Cold War/canal ruins day, Keuka, the PA Grand Canyon for fall color) - A map view with a satellite toggle, filters by drive time / cost / "good for" (free, family, rainy, winter) - Seasonal closures are dated (e.g. the Watkins Glen gorge trail is closed for the season after Oct 25) and each card says when I last checked the access info

It's free, no ads, no email signup, nothing to buy. I'd genuinely like to hear what I'm missing or what's wrong, especially places you think are overrated or underrated. I'll add good suggestions and credit the thread.

Added skiing, mountain biking, paddling and more to the free Ithaca day trip guide

A few of you asked for the link to the day trip guide yesterday, so here's an update: I added an outdoor sports section organized by season.

Winter: Greek Peak, Song and Labrador, Bristol, Swain, cross-country skiing at Greek Peak Nordic, and skating at Cass Park.

Spring to fall: mountain biking at Shindagin Hollow and Hammond Hill, the Greek Peak bike park, the Dryden Rail Trail, and a full write-up of the Black Diamond Trail.

Summer: kayak and paddleboard rentals and boat launches on Cayuga.

Year-round: bouldering at Cayuga Climbs and two disc golf courses.

Each spot has drive time, cost and where to rent gear. Still free, no ads. Link in the comments, and let me know what I missed.

Ithaca — NYC commuting

I’ve been offered a job in NYC so I’ll be splitting my time between here (Ithaca, where my family is) and there. Would love to hear the best travel tips and hacks from people who regularly do this commute.

Edited to add: this will not be a daily commute — we’re talking a block of days there (3-5) and a block of days here.

PSA Early Voting - Machines Broken

The early voting location by the airport (72 Brown Rd.) is telling voters the machines are broken and telling voters they can fill out their ballot and leave it with them.

Seems sketchy to me. Reported to the DNC Voter Assistance Hotline, but I'd recommend going to the other location or not going today.

Edit: According to an article linked in the comments it seems as if the issues were resolved around 10:15am

Do speeding tickets usually get reduced to a non-moving violation if I request a reduction

Got caught doing a 60 in a 45 in Dryden. Would the reduction form work or would I have to go into court?

Where do you get your nails done?

I’m looking for GelX extensions or just gel in particular, would rather not do acrylic but I want it to be REALLY GOOD. Not just a sub par, not improper cuticle care, not thick clunky nails.

Where do you go?

Seven Cornell-owned fraternity houses pay no property tax. The fraternity-owned house down the street pays on $970,000.

Follow-up to my wastewater post: https://www.reddit.com/r/ithaca/s/a51dE2lJyB

New page, same format, every number sourced and archived: https://ithacashare.org/fraternity-houses/

The county exempts all seven Cornell-owned houses as "Education." If taxed, they'd owe about $320,000 a year. The county started reviewing these exemptions October 6; the houses stay exempt while it runs.

If a number is wrong, tell me and I'll fix it.
