Question i will never understand vaping/smoking in the bathrooms

17, grade 12, live in Canada. i’m sure this has been posted a bajillion times but i just wanna throw my 2 cents in because i GENUINELY don’t understand. at both of the highschools ive been to and the other one in my town nobody stops you from leaving the building, nobody asks where you’re supposed to be if they see you, we’re given complete and total freedom to go to class or not. (they still mark you absent, late, and email home, but don’t physically do anything). i understand it’s probably different in the U.S. and other countries and even across provinces, but in an area where i KNOW they don’t gaf, WHY ARE WE STILL SMOKING/VAPING IN THE BATHROOM???? it’s like they want to get caught or smth i rlly don’t get it, just go walk outside for a minute. especially weed like you’re actually retarded smoking it INSIDE the school 😭

School Related I HATE BOOK BANnING'S IN SCHOOL!!!

So my school is banning books that they deem to "inappropriate" for students like "ABC's of [town name], the odyssey, a hands maid tale, and many other works a lot are lgbtq and African American written books. Last year they let kids take home the books they were planning to throw away but this year they threatened to fire the teachers if they give us the books because of how "inappropriate it is". Mind you all of us are high school age alot are between 16-18 years old, it is so stupid and they are throwing them away and not even donating them meaning that they are going to waste for no reason. I hate book bannings so much.

School Related Help me with stress

Hi, I am a freshman this year and things are not going well. For background, during middle school I was a straight A students always, school was always easy and I never worried about work. Then for 8th grade i got a B once or twice, still easy. Now things are torture, I have B's consistently in usually two classes and lots of homework. I wake up at 7:15 for school and usually go to bed at 11pm. I feel like the work is never ending and I cant seem to stop making mistakes like forgetting to turn things in. My parents get mad at me when I get B's or C's because my sister always gets A+'s. Any ideas on how to stop stressing?

Dating Advice Needed/Given Does my friend like me?

Post image
91 Upvotes

For starters me and this girl met through soccer while we were in 7th grade and were really good friends during that time. 8th grade comes and then I move houses an hour away. We had each others socials but didn’t stay in contact too much other than conversations here in there. We both liked each other before I moved (we just never dated+ we were young obv) . We didn’t talk for like two years. I’ve had a girlfriend and she’s had a boyfriend throughout that time period. We eventually both broke up with them(not at the same time) and then late sophomore year comes up where she invites me to go to the movies with her yk to “catch up” and hangout. So I agree and we are really kicking it and having fun like we used to. After the movie we go eat and then go to my house. So we are in my room just talking and listening to music while laying down on my bed. We were listening to Mrs.Magic and then I decided to put my arm around her while laying down.(hoping for the best) and she cuddled in without saying a word. My heart is racing and I am really nervous but happy.

After this song, the song lovers rock comes on , and we both look into each others eyes and kiss. Everything just felt so right at the moment. So we made out cuddle etc. (nothing beyond that happened) and then it was time for her to go home. So we get up and she gives me a final hug. Looks up at me and leans in for 3 last kisses/pecks.

After that hangout we didn’t hangout again, barely texted, it seemed as if she maybe wanted to be just friends so I didn’t do much of it. We still had conversations and stuff and continued to talk as friends without mentioning that moment.

Now we are both juniors. And yes I still have a crush on her ever since I met her. And she asked if wanted to hangout again to go trick or treating. After trick or treating we will probably be at my house again but I’m not sure if I should make a move this time or just act as a friend because I don’t want to make things weird.

Thoughts? Advice please

[EDIT* I haven’t responded to her cuz I’m still debating if I wanna go to a party w my friends or do this]

Class Advice Needed/Given How do yall do it?

I want to do well in highschool obviously. I feel like every time I come home I feel mentally and physically drained as soon as I hit something difficult. I procrasinate a lot and it takes a toll as my grades can be mediocre at times. Then I talk with other people and they do not study and they get perfect scores on everything. They make it seem so simple and I also can barley pay attention in class I just struggle to focus. And when I want to get more sleep to fight the fatigue it feels like my brain doesn't physically shut off til late in the middle of the night. I look up about caffeine and every source tells me it isn't healthy to rely on it. I want to do good but at times it feels like other people just want it 10 times more than me and they are just harder workers. Do you guys have any advice?

Question how to convince my parents to let me go to a party?

• Upvotes

Hi guys. I am a sophomore and as you know, Halloween is coming up, and a lot of people go to parties around that time. I am planning on hanging out with a few friends and passing out candy and then we will probably head to a party or something. The plans aren’t concrete yet but they most likely will want to go to a party which sounds fun and I would want to go with them. My parents on the other hand are hesitant. They used to be chill but after the Cornell case, they’ve become super not chill, which is completely valid, but I can assure everyone that my friends are very protective and all very cautious. I know drinking is a big thing at these parties, but I have vowed not to drink or do substances and my parents know this. I would simply go for the atmosphere yk? Anyways I’m wondering how I should go about asking them if i can go to parties on Halloween. If anyone has any advice or their experience then please let me know what I should do. Thank you!!

Question Should I use AI for english?

• Upvotes

Ik this is long, please bare with me. I feel like all of you will have an opinion and I would love to hear it.

For context I am currently taking grade 12 English and i want to go to waterloo engineering, so my average needs to be insanely high.

So I have been avoiding using generative AI as much as I can for my language classes because I believe that letting AI come up with my ideas, or letting it "improve" my text will make my critical thinking and writing skills worse, take away my individuality, etc etc. I also think its morally wrong to cheat to get better grades for university because obviously it is not deserved, and it is bad for the environment and whatnot.

However, 95% of people taking english, especially those who have taken it online, use gen AI for a lot of their writing, if not all of it. This inflates English grades across the world and, from what I can tell which might be wrong, makes my 100% human-written text look much worse in comparison to the average student using AI.

Now, I am stuck, because the grade I got back for my first assignment will completely ruin my chances to getting in the uni I want. I decided to retake English to start over with a less strict teacher. But for my second try in this class, I am contemplating using AI. I am not sure to what extent. Any use other than grammar correction to me feels unethical, but how else am I supposed to get a good grade? But then again, I would just be giving in and furthering the issue.

I know in my heart I deserve to get into this program, and that I am pretty good at English, good enough to get an acceptable grade. So maybe if I use AI, I am just using unethical means to serve the morally right kinda like the move trope.

Let me know how you use it and what you think I should do. I am really stressed because I dont know if i should risk being legitimate and stay with my morals, just to fail again.

(I dont wanna hear propaganda about how if I dont use AI, I am gonna be left behind. That is bs.)

General Advice Needed/Given as a senior in highschool, ive lost all motivation.

• Upvotes

ive finally started my last year of highschool and to be honest, its been one of the toughest years of my life. it sounds cliche and all but i feel like everyday theres just a looming feeling of dread and anxiety. sure, ive had fun attending events and experiencing senior “perks” but i feel like ive lost entire motivation for school and academics. ive been prioritizing going out with friends and having fun which is great and all, but as student who was once academically driven and successful, it’s scary to see my grades drop. it feels like ive lost the motivation to stay on top of work like i used to. so, are there any tips to balance schoolwork while savoring my last year as a senior? any tips for getting motivation?

College Advice Needed/Given Can anyone just, help me?

• Upvotes

I never want to dwell on my problems. I always try to ignore the negative aspects, because I know that if I focus on them, I won't be able to get them out of my head. Things that affect me physically, like my stunted growth and the inability to address it during the pandemic. I'm still the same height as I was in the fourth grade. This has likely impacted my self-esteem, but I'm also significantly below average. Furthermore, I suffer from phimosis. However, I know that I won't be able to use it in the near future. But putting aside these issues, I know that this isn't normal for someone my age. But to be honest, this is the norm for everyone. Thinking about the people around me only makes me feel more inadequate. People who make me feel incredibly self-conscious about having or not having what is considered "normal." Yes, I feel like a failure.Despite having a group of friends who are all good with women, are tall, attractive, or skilled in something, I still feel like I'm not good enough. I consider myself funny, but sometimes I'm just too afraid to tell jokes for fear of what people might say. I know they appreciate me, but it still doesn't feel like enough. I want to be someone, not just another face in the crowd, but how do I achieve that when I'm the most average person possible? I know I need to work hard in life, but I lack the skills to stand out in anything. I don't know what to do. I think I'll just spend Halloween alone. On the 30th, my friends are having a party, and I won't be able to join them. I just can't seem to socialize well, so I don't know how to talk to them or be around them. If they come to say hello to my friends, the most I can do is stand there like an idiot, waiting for them to finish talking so I can go back to being alone.I'm just... there. And there's no way I could go to the party. I could ask my best friend to tell them, but it just makes me uncomfortable. I don't like to intrude or go somewhere where I'm not invited, and I don't know if I'd be treated well. I know I'm not my best friend's favorite person, and I'm not anyone's first choice. I've always felt like an outsider. But lately, I've been ignoring it, even though I know it's true. But the party made me realize the reality. I don't know nearly as many people as I thought, and no one knows me. I'm not included in anything, and I can see that things are only going to get worse. I'll never be seen with a woman alone. Either because I don't know anyone, or because they've never shown any interest in talking to me. Am I really that boring? At this point, I don't even know what to do.

Dating Advice Needed/Given friends but some very not casual moments - what should i do?

• Upvotes

hi so me (f) and my friend (m)---i'll name him G---are juniors in high school. we became friends at the end of sophomore year/beginning of summer, and before that he'd talked to one of my friends and when we became friends i was talking to one of his friends too which kind of ended somewhat badly on his friend's side at least (this is somewhat necessary for context but feel free to skip). so basically his friend---i'll name him K---apparently had/has (idk it's weird) a massive crush on me for about 6 months, even when he had a gf (one of the reasons i dropped K) and would get like rlly jealous although not to my face weirdly (also bc we never dated so idt he'd have the right to anyways).

long story short i friendzoned K BUT during when we were talking i happened to hang out with my bff (a girl), G, and another of G's friends (a guy), and my bff and G ARE friends important to note. basically K flips out on G and A but not me and gets rlly mad because it seemed like a two-man (although I was originally shipped with G's friend). this leads me G and A to now have to hang out secretly bc K will flip a gasket if he finds out again (god forbid I have male friends). So we hang out maybe once more before i go away to a summer program, where i then decide to friendzone K after i find out he's an awful evil human being (done some pretty bad stuff). then after i friendzone K, G A and I hang out later in summer a few more times, and G and I hangout 1 on 1 too.

so when school comes around we have a retreat at the beginning of the year were everything goes wrong basically. my friend A lets slip in front of one of G's male friends (G and K were in the same friendgroup at the time, and this friend also is in it) that we'd all hung out at my house before and other times too. spoiler alert this friend tells after promising not too. G's friends flip out (mostly K) and then get mad at him because he'd been texting me during their hang outs and lying about it (because he'd get slimed out if he said he was texting me), and K was really mad because he was butthurt from how i ended it (poor choice to have "friends" three times in 2 sentences but we all make mistakes) and also bro code because he thought that it kinda confirmed a romantic ish connection between me and G. This is important because I was on a bit of the call G had with his friendgroup (including K) to explain himself and he said "it's nothing romantic" and "it's only a platonic friendship". we also discussed after (albeit briefly) that we both thought it was only a platonic friendship (i did at the time).

so this all happens around the mid-end of august, and then things blow over. since then, G and I have hung out more 1 on 1, but we get a lot of comments from our friends about each other. for example, some of my friends periodically ask me what's going on (between us), and he's told me it's relatively the same for him. my response to all of it has been (strongly might i add) that we are just friends and there's nothing going on, at least from my side. I also have told people that we both are on the same page, although now i'm not so sure because it has been 2 months since we both discussed how our friendship was platonic.

however, some of the things that we've done in the past few weeks-month are making me question the nature of our friendship too. for example: everytime one of us bakes we give the other some and this has been like a weekly thing (seems fine because i give A my baking too so); it's gotten to the point where we text everyday (something i do with A too) and we said "gn" so much we've now (for the past few months) started finding new languages every day to translate it into to be more unique; we call almost every day; and recently at our homecoming post dance party he was slightly drunk (i don't drink) and we mostly spent the whole time together and talking (sometimes in group settings, sometimes just us).

from around the time when K blew up and when we first discussed the nature of our relationship, i've constantly monitoring my feelings for him and noticing my behavior to see if i really see him as a friend or have more romantic feelings. i have never been in a relationship before, and my talking stage with K was quite strange compared to (i'm not sure if there is a "normal") others. with K i was aware that he liked me although i didn't know the extent, and i was somewhat indifferent towards him. it's hard to describe. it was hard trying to form a connection with him when there were so many people involved in trying to "set us up" or get us together when in reality i didn't even know him or know if i liked him. it's also important to note that i haven't really gotten a crush or feelings similar to that since freshman year. so all in all i'm struggling with actually knowing whether i like somebody romantically or not, since i don't have a recent experience to compare to.

so the catalyst event was today. G was giving me some of the brownie he made over the weekend and we don't have overlapping free periods so i left the middle of my class to go get it from him (he was busy before and had to leave right after school). so i go get it and then i need to walk around a bit longer to plausibly pretend like i went to the bathroom, and i tell him that he can just go back to studying or whatever he was doing during his free but he decides to just walk with me a bit. and then just my luck one of my friends (one of the ones who asks me about our friendship more than others who also happened to be in the class i was in) runs into us. yikes.

now i'm not stupid i know what this looks like. it looks like i ditched class to walk around with G with is probably not a casual thing you do around school. but then again if it was my other friend A nothing would be a cause for doubt. so G leaves because it's kinda awkward and i go with the friend who discovered us to the bathroom without saying anything. she then says "are you really not going to say anything" and i'm like "do i need to" and she says "you can't not say anything" and i'm like ...

so she asks me (kind of the same question she's been asking me for a month) "do you really not see it going anywhere" - it being the relationship. she also made the point that we looked like how another couple would just walk around and talk and that comparison really got me. and yeah i'd been thinking about it recently like i seem more attached to G as of late but then again i just don't know. i'm really unsure as to what my feelings are and where we both stand too. like recently i was saying i was gonna watch a movie releasing soon and he invited me (like i know we hang out but the way it was phrased was odd or maybe i'm reading too much into it) and we've also been building this food tour of places we wanna go eat.

i really just don't know what to do. i kind of want to ask him like what's he thinks about the whole thing but then i don't know honestly where i stand. i feel like maybe theres a chance that i like him just because of the way my behavior has been recently and my thoughts, but then again i did this with K in convincing myself i liked him when really i think i just liked the idea of actually being in a relationship as that's an experience i've never really had. i'm so confused about the whole situation and i don't know what to do. do i ask to talk to him about it? i just am scared of what he'd say because i don't know what i actually want yet. like do i really want a relationship with him, or just a relationship? i feel like it'd be unfair to me and him if it was the latter, but i don't want to invalidate my feelings too. we kinda didn't talk about it and just have been texting about other stuff, but i'm so lost. i feel like i need to say something soon or else it'll just gloss over and then bringing up the situation with my friend today just seems pointless.

i know myself well enough to know that if i don't do anything things will just go on the same, and maybe it'll change in the future, but i don't like chasing after things for answers---i'm willing to let stuff go to stay where i am because i am happy.

so if anybody has any insight into what you think i should do please please let me know i really would love help. even if not thanks for reading

Rant I am stupid

5 tries. Five fucking tries. The same score every time.

I just failed this fucking quiz for the fifth time over after 3 free retakes and asking the teacher to unlock the assignment twice afterwards.

Every time. I got the same fucking score. 3/5.

It’s not even a hard quiz. It’s not even a hard class. I’m just stupid.

This was all I needed to bring my grade up. All I needed was at least a 4/5. And yet I begged for the assignment to be unlocked twice so I could retake it. And I failed both times.

The last time, I got so anxious over my answers I decided to cheat and look up the answers on Google after I did it to fix my own answers. Just to realize the answers I initially put in were all right and the ones from Google were wrong. And I got a fucking 3/5. Again.

I’m not asking for another unlock atp. I have to just cut my losses now. There is no moral here, there is no take away. I’m just dumb as fuck and fumbled my one chance of fixing my grade 5 different times.

Question I help run a small free site for volunteer hours + live tutoring — would high schoolers actually use this?

Genuine question, not trying to advertise. A few of us built

globalstudenthub.org as a free bulletin board for students — local

volunteer events, service hour tracking with certificates, free live

tutoring sessions, and a scholarship finder.

We keep debating what students actually need vs. what we *think* they

need. So honest answers appreciated:

- How do you find volunteer hours right now? School counselor, random

  Google, friends?

- Is tracking hours for college apps actually a pain, or does your

  school handle it?

- Would you trust a free tutoring site run by volunteers, or does that

  sound sketchy?

Link's above if you want to poke at it and tell me what's broken.

Roast away

General Advice Needed/Given Should I get a job during my senior year?

I am currently 17 and 2 months into my senior year. I have a lot going on, hanging out with friends during weekends and other things during the week. But I get out of school at 11:30 each day and I am wondering if I should get a job or just enjoy the rest of my senior year while finding other ways to make money.

So I’m thinking about riding my new e scooter to school, and I want to know if it’s safe or not.
