Rule Changes and Community Updates!

Hello everyone!

Some changes are gonna be made around here.

This subreddit has essentially turned into a clone of r/crafts and I'm seeing a lot of posts double posted to both. We've also realized that there isn't a hobby or art sub that isn't crawling with people making covert ads and completely ignoring or just barely skirting the rules of the subreddits they're posting in.

We want to create a space where we can look at handmade things without ads. We want to create a community that's free of advertising and where we can actually share and discuss crafts.

So, that leads us to the first new rule, we're going to allow craft and crafting discussion here. If you have crafting questions, then feel free to ask! This used to be the case before the last mod and now we're making it a discussion inclusive subreddit again!

Second change, we'll add some flair! So you can mark WIP, discussion, question, etc...

Third change is that you're not allowed to tell people to monetized their hobbies or that they should sell something. Our first is and will always be that this is a no promotion subreddit. So no links to your shop or social media are allowed. No talks about selling as fairs or shows or how to do that, etc...

The fourth rule is that if you sell crafts, you're no longer allowed to post the for sale crafts here. Feel free to post crafts that you don't sell, but no more crafts that you're selling. We've had far too many spam and dropshipping posts lately and people just outright breaking the rules. If you do post here, you're not allowed to use an account that has Etsy or other links to sale sites/sites or social media that promote your business. You will be banned on site for that. You may appeal this ban if you remove all links and keep it that way for at least a week. We will check.

These rules start now, but we'll be allowing about a week or so for adjustment before we start giving any real consequences for things (temp bans for 3 days, for example.)

Just a reminder also that we still have a no selling or buying rule and no talking about selling or buying. This includes not telling people to monetize their hobbies or asking about craft fair things.

You will start to see the rules and report reasons he updated as we go this week. We want this community to be one for and by crafters and not by dropshippers, AI users, or spammers.

We have two of these large lanterns in our home (I know the lanterns themselves are not handmade...or maybe they were, just not by me lol). My husband was ready to just get rid of them but I had a vision. So, I used some fake leading and some stained glass paint and turned one into a cool little 70s inspired thing that, other than a couple of little issues here and there, I'm pretty proud of!

Now, I have three options for the second one;

  1. I could make another one exactly like it and have matching lanterns. However, I have run out of most of the colors I was using and the only problem is that the paint is kind of expensive and I had to get a big pack of the paint with a bunch of other colors I didnt use, just to get the ones I wanted for this one. This is husbands preference

  2. Because I've already bought the pack with the other colors, I could do a warm-toned lamp (reds, oranges, yellows, pinks, etc) in the same style. It would still "match" but I'm a big fan of visual symmetry and I think it would bother me if they were in the same room (but I could always put them in different rooms). I like this option, idk if I LOVE it

  3. I break up the set (I'm not attached to there being two of them anyway) and go a completely separate route with the other one (my preference).

  4. I could go ahead and try option 2, see how I feel about it, and take it off if I don't like it - the paint will peel pretty easily from what I'm told

Just looking to get some other creative eyes on this!

Thanks for your help!

Handmade gourd bag. What catches your eye?

This crossbody bag is handmade from a natural dried gourd. I drilled holes along the edge and threaded cord around the rim. The inner lining is made of coiled hemp rope, bonded with glue. It has a rope shoulder strap, decorated with small gourd charms and a tassel.

What’s your thought on this piece?

The details are what bring the layers to life.

In this stage, I’m caulking the edges of the layered cardboard to smooth everything out and create a more seamless finish. Then comes the gesso, laying down the foundation for the next stage of this Dalí-inspired portrait.

From raw cardboard to a sculpted work of art, every layer brings me one step closer to the final vision.

One step at a time. One layer at a time.

IIL LEGO botanical sets but want something that feels more like actual crafting, WEWIL?

I love the LEGO flowers because they look nice on my shelf, but the building process is just snapping plastic together, and it’s getting kind of old. I’m looking for DIY craft kits that are satisfying to finish but actually involve using your hands or working with real materials not just mindless plastic pieces or paint-by-number kits that bore me out of my mind. I looked into those miniature wood kits like rolife makes, but I’m worried the gluing part might be tedious rather than fun. Does anyone know of kits that strike a good balance between requiring some real skill and not taking a million years to look good?

The most complicated pattern I have followed to date. This is the first bag I have sewn; I learned how to sew last summer and would consider myself an ambitious beginner still. The pattern is the Quilted Tote Bag Pattern by porchepatterns ☺️ (cannot take credit for the design).

Every great piece starts with a single cut.
The first step in bringing my Dalí-inspired 3D portrait to life is hand-cutting the cardboard, layer by layer, using a razor blade. Each cut helps build the shape, depth, and character of the final piece.
No shortcuts, just patience, precision, and a whole lot of cardboard. This is where the transformation begins.
Follow along to see this piece come to life!

I mentioned that my daughter had just turned 5 and wanted a hamster pet, but I felt it was too soon to get her a real-life one, so I made this instead as a surprise gift.

To attach tiny ornaments to small wooden Christmas trees like these, what would be best: hot glue, elmer's glue, super glue? I appreciate any advice!

My 2yr old is obsessed with all the pumpkins he’s seeing around for spooky season! Always calling out “pumpkin head!” I figured I’d try to make him a doll (my first try). He came out a bit janky but I hope to get better with the future dolls I’ll make!

I made this graphic T shirt: Graphic design, printing, pattern and sewing by myself

I started to make my own T-Shirts a while ago because I like to make them look and feel how I want.

I made this one from scratch, designing the graphics, preparing the screens, screenprinting blank cotton and sewing them to a complete shirt using my own drafted pattern.

I choose to make a heavier shirt with a high neckline, maybe a tad too high for this type of shirt but I like it.

What do you think?
