Update (June 30, 11:37 AM): Great discussion everyone! Our team appreciated all of your insightful questions. This AMA has now concluded, but you can revisit our replies below.

You can identify who provided answers by their initial in the answers: Alex Creely (AJC), Jon Hillesheim (JCH), Tom Body (TAJB), and Ryan Sweeney (RS).

About this AMA:

This time with me and three other CFS physicists who are ready to talk about the five new ARC physics basis papers showing what’ll make our ARC fusion power plants tick.

These peer-reviewed research papers that we and our collaborators published earlier in June are important for CFS and for fusion energy: They cover many aspects of the plasma physics at play in our ARC power plant, including challenges like plasma disruptions and heat exhaust. They also show how transparency and rigorous research can help build trust in what we all know is a very difficult endeavor.

If you’re curious about this physics work or about fusion physics in general, feel free to get things started by asking your questions on this thread.

The three CFS physicists who plan to join me to answer your questions are experts in their field: Jon Hillesheim, CFS Principal Scientist and lead author of the overview paper; Tom Body, CFS Senior Scientist and a lead author on the paper about heat exhaust; and Ryan Sweeney, CFS Manager of Disruption Physics and lead author of the paper about handling plasma disruptions. They’re among the 58 authors who helped write these papers, along with an editorial that accompanied the papers that I wrote.

A little more about the papers: They detail how we’ll be able to produce about 1.1 gigawatts of fusion power from our ARC tokamak — power that we can convert into 400 megawatts of net electricity for the power grid. The papers also show the crucial role our SPARC tokamak will play in putting the finishing touches on the ARC design. We’re using a “late-lock” approach that lets us apply what we’ve learned from SPARC to the ARC design. Overall, the papers show our confidence in the soundness of our ARC plant’s key physics. That builds the foundation for all the engineering, design, and cost optimization work that we’ve begun.

For a deeper dive into these papers, you can check our blog post detailing the ARC physics basis papers.

Wendelstein 7-X sets new fusion performance records

Wendelstein 7-X was never meant to generate electricity. It is an experiment built to test whether an optimized stellarator does in practice what theory predicts, and whether it is therefore a candidate for a power plant. The device runs on hydrogen, not deuterium-tritium fuel, so it is not designed to produce net energy.

What makes the project interesting is how it was built. It grew in stages, and each stage depended on what the previous one had proved. In its first campaigns from 2015 to 2018, W7-X ran with an uncooled divertor, the component that takes the heat and particles leaving the plasma. That limited discharges to a few seconds. Only after those campaigns showed that the magnetic cage and the optimization worked as calculated did the institute install water cooling for all plasma-facing components. Operation resumed in 2022, and in 2023 the device ran an eight-minute plasma.

Next came better fuelling. In 2024 a continuous pellet injector, built by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US, began firing frozen hydrogen pellets into the plasma while IPP's own microwave system heated it. In May 2025 that combination produced a world record for the triple product over long pulses, sustained for 43 seconds. Tokamaks still lead for short pulses, but for long ones W7-X is now level with JET, a machine with three times the plasma volume.

This approach is slow, but it reflects the actual state of knowledge, since each step is financed and built only once the previous one has delivered. And no country manages it alone. The record involved American, German and Japanese teams. In July 2026 IPP and the Technical University of Munich founded a center to test materials for future reactor walls, and in October 2026 IPP and Columbia University announced a joint transatlantic center that also brings in private stellarator and tokamak companies. Without pooling resources this way, fusion energy would remain a pipe dream.

For anyone who wants to go deeper, I recommend Hartmut Zohm's videos on YouTube, including his explanations of the stellarator aimed at non-specialists. He is one of the few researchers who can explain fusion without dumbing it down. As a Tokamak physicist at IPP, he can also explain clearly why the Stellarator is a serious alternative.

How Solving Fluid Turbulence Unlocks Fusion Containment: A Cross-Domain AI Bridge

(Updated) The fusion industry already possesses the correct hardware. We are actively deploying deep reinforcement learning, advanced stellarator geometries, and high-yield pulsed mechanics. But currently, the objective function of those tools is suppression—fighting the Kolmogorov cascade to freeze 100-million-degree plasma in a static equilibrium.

My edge-native neuro-symbolic AI architecture, Christine (running locally on consumer hardware via a Dynamic Valency Tensor Graph), identified that this objective is thermodynamically impossible. We are fighting a fractal system with linear actuators. Christine's breakthrough is changing the objective function to Heteroclinic Cycle Routing. Instead of using AI and magnetic shear to fight the plasma's kinetic energy, we must repurpose those exact tools to actively steer the fluid's chaotic momentum through a continuous loop of unstable saddle points.

By bridging discrete fluid dynamics to magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), Christine generated a comprehensive, dual-scale containment architecture that shifts our paradigm from static stability to dynamic robustness.

1. The Macro-Routing: Phase-Locked Magnetic Topology Instead of a rigid magnetic wall that fluid chaos naturally breaks, we design the containment topology to mirror the discrete manifolds of fluid turbulence. By phase-locking the magnetic coils to operate as a coupled oscillator resonating with the macroscopic Alfvén waves, the magnetic field acts as a banked turn rather than a brick wall. The plasma's own chaotic kinetic energy propels it along the heteroclinic cycle. This zero-latency routing drastically reduces the parasitic electrical draw of the coils, opening a direct path to net-energy positive ($Q > 1$) power.

2. The Micro-Filter: Internal Transport Barriers (ITBs) Because turbulence is fractal, macroscopic phase-locking cannot catch the high-frequency micro-eddies (which would normally cause localized magnetic reconnection and bleed thermal energy). Instead of fighting micro-turbulence with physical magnets—which triggers catastrophic Lenz's Law surface currents—the architecture relies on the plasma's own Internal Transport Barriers. ITBs generate localized $\mathbf{E} \times \mathbf{B}$ flow shear, acting as a passive, fluid-dynamic shredder that tears the microscopic tearing modes apart before they reach the magnetic saddle points.

3. The Physical Facility Constraints: Neutrons & Exhaust Theoretical elegance dies against physical engineering. To transition this topology into a functional reactor, Christine’s DVTG mapped two critical causal constraints:

  • Neutron Flux Isolation: Because neutrons have no charge and ignore the magnetic routing, charged particle containment is explicitly decoupled from kinetic energy capture. A dedicated physical shield (Lithium-6/Beryllium inner blanket, Tungsten outer shield) absorbs the neutron bombardment and breeds tritium in situ, protecting the facility from embrittlement.
  • The Topological Centrifuge (Helium Ash): A mathematically "perfect" loop chokes on its own exhaust. The design intentionally introduces a controlled topological leak at the lowest-energy saddle point in the heteroclinic cycle. This acts as a thermodynamic divertor valve, separating the cooler, heavier Helium-4 ash while retaining the high-energy D-T fuel.

The Disruption I engineered Christine as an offline, continuous-cognition radar to find structural blind spots by colliding isolated disciplines. I am open-sourcing this hypothesis because I do not possess a multi-billion dollar lab to test it. The era of requiring massive cloud mainframes to achieve paradigm-shifting scientific synthesis is ending. We now have the ability to run active AI co-pilots on local workstations that hand human scientists the exact topological maps needed to bypass fundamental industry bottlenecks.

Just curious: does ICF stand a chance at becoming a successful design for a power-generating plant?

Compared to tokamaks/stellarators which seem more designed to be actual net-energy devices than, for example, the NIF?

Apologies if this is a naive question or if I’m mis-representing ICF, but I’m aware the NIF is far from engineering Q>1 given the massive system of power-hungry lasers.

Critique on Helion's Thesis: Comments on the Paper “Fundamental Scaling of Adiabatic Compression of Field Reversed Configuration Thermonuclear Fusion Plasmas”

Experiments were either too short lived (pulsed compression experiments) or had too low density (NBI-fueled quasi-steady-state) to show thermalization. This has, however, inevitably to change for fusion power production, as a Lawson-type criterium and the conditions for thermal equilibration have the same functional dependence on density.

Basically they claim Helion has a too optimistic assumption of the efficiency.
