Megathread for discussion related to recent events

Creating this megathread in hopes of reducing "i was banned from ___" and recent open source drama posts in subreddit while still allowing discussion around it,

Making posts about this stuff is still allowed but i would rather if it could be put here so the main subreddit is not having the same type of posts over and over again

The head mod of the subreddit has said this about an hour ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/foss/comments/1xg3k2o/comment/19rp2205wwrur/

Hey guys, I promise I'm still here. I just replied in a different thread I think.

My head's been under a rock so I have little understanding of what's going on. Regardless, my commitment is still to create a welcoming community that embraces different opinions. I need some time to gather myself and understand what's going on, then hopefully get to the bottom of this.

As for me i have no say in removing mods and its up to the head mod, i am here to keep the subreddit about FOSS and making sure people follow rules

Welcome to FOSS!

Hi everyone,

I'm a big fan of using Free and Open Source software, and wanted to share my love of it on reddit. I want to get this sub up and running, with the goal that it becomes a hub for discussing FOSS, looking for suggestions of what to use, promoting your projects, posting news related to FOSS, etc.

I personally have very little experience moderating, let alone on reddit so please pardon me while I bump around the controls. :) My near-term goal right now is to put up a list of subs that share FOSS principles (in the sidebar, or wiki?) then maybe another list of FOSS-related resources that I'm aware of. I'd appreciate suggestions too!

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you'll be a part of the FOSS community.

I use AI, so what? I made my free open source project come true after 15 years of dreaming it. The objective: Save old hardware from being thrown away. A <10MB RAM desktop environment.

I am making the lightest desktop environment ever made. Just one reason: Save old hardware for being thrown away.

I work from 9 to 24 on boring office projects as a software developer, I have 12 years of experience. I now can use AI + my engineering skills to build with me dream projects that wouldn't be possible without a lot of free time.

The objective is to save old hardware like my N2808 notebook, and my step father samsung laptop he still uses. I see a lot of people struggling with desktop environments because all of them are (light + looks like crap) (looks decent + not light enough) so I want to take both worlds and make the most beautiful fastest desktop environment.

This is not meant to be just a random project, this has a real purpose to recycle old hardware instead of throwing it away.

Microsoft, Adobe, and all these companies are still increasing system requirements, to the point that nowadays running a windows 11 desktop is like running a videogame in the background (4gb ram usage, hell...)

I always was the spectator, looking how everything got more expensive in memory, while established projects like icewm, xfce and xlqt did not change much from their "old school" ui, which I like of course, but still did not provide enough savings to justify.

Support the project. Support recycling hardware. Support the future of computers to be clean, lean and modular and not bloated.

NOT saying all AI-assisted software is slop, but whenever I see one of these I IMMEDIATELY know the creator "built" this piece of abandonware with absolutely zero effort put into it.

EDIT: My image editor didn't have a text function so that's why it's badly handwritten

Is the MOD of this sub right that of you use closed tools to develop something it doesn't count as floss anymore? Is it embarrassing they don't know what floss is?

Post image
153 Upvotes

Seems borderline ridiculous but curious on everyone else's take.

Do you really think a mod who thinks this won't enforce a rule like this on the sub when the user is already blocking AI users on other subs?

Do you think a person with this opinion should be allowed to continue to moderate this sub in light of the destruction they are wrecking on r/opensource ?

Workhorse: a durable task queue inside PostgreSQL

Thumbnail

What it is

Workhorse runs background tasks for your application and keeps every task in PostgreSQL. If your application already uses PostgreSQL, you add Workhorse and you need nothing else to run background jobs. Workers in 8+ languages all use one SQL protocol, and they share one dashboard. The code is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

What it does

  1. The dashboard lives inside your application. You mount it at a path such as /workhorse, in any of the eight languages. It uses your application's own login, so you do not run a second admin system. It shows tasks, attempts, checkpoints, schedules, queues, workers, failures, and health for every machine.
  2. A stopped worker does not lose work. A Workhorse worker holds a lease on each task. If the lease expires, another worker takes the task. A fence token stops the old worker from overwriting newer work if it comes back.
  3. Concurrency and rate limits. The limits live in the database, so they apply to all workers together. You can also set them for each key, not only for a whole queue. This is very useful for the rate limit of an external API.
  4. Long tasks do not start over. A handler can save checkpoints. If the task runs again, it skips the parts that already finished. It can also wait for a timer or a signal without holding a worker slot.
  5. Durable waits without a second service. Timers, signals, and child tasks need only PostgreSQL. There is no workflow server to run, and you can start the work inside your own database transaction.
  6. Many languages, one queue. A Go service can enqueue a task and a Python worker can run it, on the same queue.

How I build it

I use AI coding tools to build Workhorse, and want to say it openly. Each change goes through review and CI. Each language SDK runs its tests (more than 500+ test files by far) against a real PostgreSQL database. Each design decision is recorded, and there is more than 100 of them. You can read why Workhorse works the way it does, not only what it does.

When it is not the right tool

I want to be honest about this too:

  • If your application does not use PostgreSQL, Workhorse is not for you.
  • Workhorse shares your PostgreSQL database. If you want your queue to scale on its own, a separate broker can suit you better.
  • Like most task queues, Workhorse delivers each task at least once. It is a good idea to give your external calls idempotency keys.

Workhorse is in public beta. You can use it for evaluation and early production.

Fun fact, if you look closely, our horse logo is not pixel perfect. Those are scars, every good workhorse should have a few.

SUB/WAVE: self-hosted internet radio from your own music library, with a DJ that talks between tracks (MIT)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

SUB/WAVE turns your own music library into a radio station. Everyone tuned in hears the same thing at the same time. There's no skip button and no shuffle, just a DJ who picks the next song and talks in between: the time, the weather, what's coming up next.

The video is about the DJ's voice. You can run the voices on your own machine, plug in a voice server you already have, or use a cloud service. You can even clone a voice from a short clip. If a voice fails, another one takes over, so the station never goes quiet.

You can have several DJs, each with its own voice and personality, and schedule them into shows across the week. A host can bring on guest co-hosts and banter with them. Listeners can ask for a song in plain words, like "something upbeat" or "anything by Radiohead", and the DJ introduces it on air. Between songs the DJ can do the news, the weather or a segment you write yourself. It waits for a song's sung intro to finish before it talks, and the music dips under its voice.

The self-hosted version is free, MIT licensed, and has everything.

Repo: https://github.com/perminder-klair/subwave

Listen to the demo: https://www.getsubwave.com/listen

All of these features are in the README: personas, scheduled shows, co-hosts, plain-language requests, skills, vocal detection and ducking.

Open source linter to avoid UI bugs when using coding agents (Claude Code, Codex,... and JS compatible)

As the title, I don't understand why frontier model at this stage, make jaw dropping 3D designs, complex systems, yet still making these mistakes like text flows out of the card margin, text with same color with background,...

Processing img dgxnv6zcg1yh1...

So I created renderlint https://github.com/ngocanhnckh/renderlint so far it help me avoids lots of corrections and mistakes in one shot. Idea is simple, just check and stress all the frontend pages with more text when compiling in a virtual browser in different responsive screen size (programmatically not by AI vision or text capability) then point out errors like a compilation error, not letting Claude Code to ship sloppy stuff before they fix all of that. I also allows it to add like an important tag on places that intentionally have misplacement or contrast less color

But I believe it's not perfect yet, can improve more and help even more people here, so I'm asking for more feedback and PRs so we can enjoy bug free frontend vibing :D

Handy: offline voice typing for Windows, macOS and Linux (MIT)

Sharing Handy for anyone looking for a free, open-source dictation app. Press a shortcut, speak, and it transcribes into the text field you're using.

You download a speech model first, then transcription runs locally. It supports Windows, macOS and Linux, and the code is MIT licensed.

https://github.com/cjpais/Handy

I'm not affiliated with the project. I'm especially interested in Portuguese dictation with English programming terms mixed in. Has anyone tried it for that? Which model worked best for you?

I made a pretty, lightweight file searcher and launcher for Windows.

Introducing Heimdall, a glassy launcher for Windows. And yes, it's faster than Everything.

Press F5 and type. It finds apps, every file, open windows, calculates sums and web searches.

Native Rust, under 2 MB, ZERO telemetry. Free and open source.

EDIT: Thank you for the great reception! I just published the 1.0.1 release with some more QoL and fixes for a few annoying quirks. It's also faster than before, and now beats Everything on every search metric. It's also come to my attention that the link doesn't show up for some reason, so you can get it here:

  • 4 Stay on topic of the subreddit

Stay on topic and don't spam random nonsense

These are the only rules added, I saw there was only 1 rule so to be more clear with users and follow reddit code of conduct i added some, if you have any feedback you are welcome to share it on this post,

ariaWatch - A TUI Donwload Manager based on aria2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

https://github.com/AnkitKumarDhal/ariaWatch/releases/tag/v0.3.0

Hello everyone!

I've been working on this TUI download manager based on aria2, because well i tried finding the lightest and fastest download manager, but i couldn't find anything better than aria2 in the terminal. I tried a few TUI options for it but i couldn't find any modern TUI (anything that didn't look it was from the mid 2010s) so i tried to make one myself.

It started out as a simple monitor for an already running aria2 server, but with this v0.3 release, it turns into a full-fledged download manager, with support for:

adding download URLs directly, even magnet links are supported

adding .torrent files

keeping history of downloads

download actions (pause, resume, remove, delete)

information about the download

able to monitor a pre-existing aria2 server

I'd love for people to try it out and give feedback on what issues they face, and what things can be improved. Do give it a try! The binary release is for Linux x86_64 only for now,,, with other OS's support planned for future releases.

About the other TUI's looking from mid-2010s claim,,, mine doesn't look any better either, but its still in the very early stages, and v0.5 is going to be a major UI overhaul with a UI that i have planned beforehand hehe :3

Thank you!

I built MyCam, an MIT-licensed app that turns your phone into a Windows webcam without ADB or developer options

Hi all, I'm the developer. MyCam is a free, open-source (MIT) way to use your phone as a webcam on Windows 10/11. On the PC it shows up as a normal camera called "MyCam", so it works in Teams, OBS, browsers and the Camera app.

I made it because most phone-webcam apps are closed source, push a subscription, or need USB debugging turned on. With MyCam:

  • Android: plug in over USB (it uses Android Open Accessory, not ADB) or pair over Wi-Fi with a QR code / 6-digit code
  • iPhone: nothing to install. The PC serves a small HTTPS page, you scan a QR code and open it in Safari
  • Up to 4K and up to 120 fps, but only what your phone actually supports
  • No ads, no account, no cloud. Video only goes from your phone to your PC
  • A PC has to be explicitly allowed on the phone before it gets video, and the camera turns off when Windows locks

On Windows 11 it uses the Frame Server virtual camera API; on Windows 10 it falls back to a DirectShow filter, the same approach as OBS Virtual Camera. The architecture and wire protocol are documented in docs/ARCHITECTURE.md.

Known rough edges: the installer isn't code-signed yet (you'll see "unknown publisher"),

Repo: https://github.com/whoissaaif/mycam

Bug reports and PRs are welcome, and I'd especially like testing on different phones.

Shipping a skill is the tutorial. Maintaining it is the actual game.

New model. Updated tool. Different reference docs. One innocent instruction edit.

At what point does “this skill works” become “this skill worked in a very specific historical moment”?

I’m building skillEd to help rerun evaluations and compare results as things change: https://github.com/DeadHead04/skillEd

What should a minimum maintenance checklist include before releasing a skill update?

I’d love feedback through issues and focused PRs. And if the project helps, a star is appreciated. The useful part is making the evidence better.
