General question State of the Subreddit: Mod wants your response!

Hey team

We’ve got a basic automod set up that seems to post when it’s supposed to and the crowd controls seem to have helped a bit with spam posts from bots!

I’ve been thinking we might want a weekly thread for “How do I dye this” posts: does this seem like a good direction?

IMHO, a lot of people dropping into the subreddit are not 1. Doing basic googling 2. Searching the subreddit or 3. Reading the rules about how to format posts.

While the megathread probably won’t get as many responses as the individual posts do, making the subreddit less helpful for those people, the purpose of this subreddit is to celebrate the art of dyeing and share our experiences and knowledge.

The subreddit is overwhelmingly people who only want a quick answer to a question.

State of the Subreddit & Seeking Volunteers For Wiki Creation

  1. What's up team I totally forgot I added "user flair" to the subreddit months ago- lemme know if y'all have any suggestions but I feel like I came up with alright ideas

  2. I have enabled an auto mod for all "How do I dye this" posts, it reads as follows:

Our wiki is currently under construction however: there's a good chance your question has been answered in a previous post. If you are dyeing cellulose fibres (cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, flax, nettle, rayon, bamboo, tencel, plants generally, etc.), you will need a fiber reactive dye.

If you are dyeing a protein fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, Angora, mohair, feathers, animal stuff generally, etc.), you will need an acid dye.

Leather is dyed with leather specific dyes such as those from Angelus.

Silk will dye with either acid or fiber reactive dyes but will yield different results depending on which you use.

Polyester can sometimes be dyed. It can only be dyed with synthetic specific dyes such as iDye Poly or RIT Dyemore. It usually cannot achieve a dark or rich colour at home. Acrylic usually cannot be dyed at all.

  1. I've had "post guidance" enabled: reddit seems to have changed what can and cannot be done via auto mod. So I can't auto delete posts that mention specific topics, however I've had these pop up messages for common topics that give basic advice/wisdom before users posts.

  2. Piggybacking off that, I can't set a limit manually to filter low karma users or new accounts but I have turned on Reddits "crowd control" and "reputation" filters

  3. Previously, people have offered to help write our wiki. Would people still be interested in doing that?

How do I dye this? Can you temporarily dye white fabric to ivory?

I have a white 100% cotton skirt, that I want to wear with some other ivory garments. The color difference bothers me, but I normally like to wear that skirt with white garments. Is it possible to temporarily dye it ivory so I can wear it with the ivory garments, then wash it out for normal wear?

I've heard of tea dyeing, but I'm not sure how permanent it is. This really just needs to be a one time thing so if that means dunking it in cold tea and wearing it without rinsing it out, so be it. I just wanna know if anyone has experience with this though, before I try that haha!

How do I dye this? Dyeing 100% cotton

I have a white 100% cotton dress I thrifted with the intent of trying to dye it. It has been washed, but I would like to know the best brand of dye to use. I know it’s not Rit. I have heard of Dharma, but I wanted to check with those with more experience, which is pretty much anyone. I know cotton needs a fixative, and it seems that I should just get a dye with a fixative in it, but I don’t know which those are.

How do I dye this? Dyeing my jeans black

I’m planning on buying the intense black fabric dye from dylon. One pod is supposed to dye 600g of fabric, but my jeans weigh 800g so i was thinking of just using two whole pods to try and get as dark as possible. Is this a good idea?
Also, they are 98% cotton and 2% polyurethane and i was wondering if this 2% would make any difference.

I made this! Successful 100% Polyester Garment Dye with Black Tea

hello! just wanted to drop this experiment here for anyone who was curious. i got a cheap dress from amazon for my halloween costume* that i planned on tea dyeing and weathering, not realizing it was 100% polyester. im aware that this isn't a permanent dye due to the material and method, but im pleasantly surprised that this worked at all so i wanted to share in case anyone else was considering dyeing 100% polyester!

*i did not post this in the halloween megathread since this is a success story, not a question. please let me know if i should post there and individually upload photos instead!

here are the details in case anyone has been discouraged from trying tea dyeing polyester and wants to give it a go:

- 5 bags of tazo pumpkin spice chai tea (i only used this one specifically because i knew id be smelling it for hours)

- bring to a boil in a large pot, stirring consistently

- once boiling, reduce to simmer and add the garment ensuring it is fully submerged and has enough room to stir around

- let it simmer, stirring occasionally, for at least 1.5 hours

- once the fabric colour is to your liking, drain and rinse off any loose tea leaves with cold water

- because it's a costume: preheat oven to 350 f, place garment on a baking sheet and put in oven, watching closely for 30-45 min*

*i only did this because this is a halloween costume (think zombie-ish) that i plan to further weather and distress, and the subtle burn marks add texture to the garment

after reading so much about how tea dyeing polyester just isn't possible, i was really surprised this worked at all and wanted to share! it actually turned out even darker than i thought it would, so im considering washing it to see how much lighter it gets, knowing that i can just re-dye it if it lifts too much in the wash. if i go that route i will post an update!

General question Splotchy dye - can I lighten targeted spots

I used jaquard acid color in Kelly green over stove top with vinegar added to dye a brown sweater to this beautiful mossy green which I really like. Only problem is the uneven splotches of darker Kelly green. If I dye it again to even things out I'm assuming I'll end up with the darker green all over which I don't want (this happened to another sweater). I was wondering if there's a way to only lighten the specific spots using some kind of spray dye remover to make the splotches less stark?

Composition - 95 percent cashmere and wool blend sweater.

How do I dye this? Butter yellow/ivory to pink or purple

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Complete newbie looking for suggestions. I ordered this dress thinking it would be cream white as pictured, and it’s actually verrrryyyy ivory to the point of butter yellow (pics 2 & 3) - which is unfortunately one of the worst colors on me.

I’d like to try taking it to a pink or purple - preferably on the cooler toned side but if I’m stuck with warmer, that’s okay. The cut of the dress is super flattering and I want to try to get it to a wearable color!

The exterior layer is 100% cotton, and the interior lining layer is 100% polyester. Fast fashion, not going to be devestated if it’s not perfect.

TIA 🖤

Resources pot material?

I want to dye some pants I have, but i'm worried that doing it in my bathtub in a plastic storage bin won't be hot enough water (cotton pants) for non-rit dye. if I were to buy a giant stock pot, is there any reason I shouldn't just buy the cheapest one I can find in a suitable size from a restaurant supply store (not amazon) or are there material considerations to keep in mind? (do some metals react weirdly with dharma dyes?)

How do I dye this? I DON’T CARE ABOUT THIS SWEATER

Hey! I want to dye this sweater. I tried once just putting it in a black dye bath with some other stuff just to see what would happen and it took it from a periwinkle to a slightly grayish periwinkle. I would like to make it darker somehow. It doesn’t have to be pitch black (I realize that probably isn’t possible), but I want something darker. I prefer a grunge/alt aesthetic in my day to day and I feel like I would wear this sweater way more if it got dyed. Tag says over 90% polyester.

How do I dye this? Barn Coat?

Okay, I picked up an LL Bean Barn Coat fairly inexpensively with the idea I would try and dye it as the plain tan is...well...plain. It is 100% cotton canvas with corduroy trim.

This is meant to be a fun experiment and it is an 'outside in the woods' garment so it does not have to be perfect.

What I have figured thus far: I'll use PRO MX Reactive dye. It needs about 9 tsp of dye (according to their instructions) as it is ~3 pounds weighing on a scale. Hot wash => Sythrapol => rinse => into the dye bath in a plastic bucket.

My questions.

That is A LOT of salt. Almost 5 pounds. Am I reading that right? If I'm adding it to the dye bath will it even dissolve?

I know it likely won't dye "true to color" for what I see on the PRO website and I'm a bit colorblind anyway - what colors would be good for that light tan? I got it thinking it would be a decent blank canvas (no pun intended) but not sure if there are things that would/would not work well with it. I figured going to that carhartt orange-brown would probably be easy as it is relatively close.

How do I dye this? HELP ME HOW CAN I MAKE THESE MATCH!!!!???????

I would really like for the fur to match the shirt. The party is in 3 days…. Technically I would start tomorrow so I would have two days really…. I believe the fur is mostly if not all polyester. “crafted from soft polyester fibers, this plush material offers a cozy, skin-friendly experience; The fabric is full and plush, resistant to shedding” is what the description says. Is there any hope for me be honest please

How do I dye this? UV reactive costume idea?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Im gonna be going to a blacklight party in about 2 weeks, and really want to make a pirate outfit glow under the blacklight. My researchs makes me think that Im not capable of dyeing it successfully myself, my budget is <$200, and I have limited time in the day, no more than a couple hours each day at most.

I was wondering what the pro's think of my idea. Im gonna buy all the parts of the outfit that I want, and coat the whole piece in UV reactive acrylic paint. We've drawn on shirts before with this paint so Ive used it a couple times, but im thinking about coating the clothing like im breading chicken. Throw it in a bucket, pour the paint, and work it in until the whole thing is coated. Then Ill stick it on a clothes line to dry, and it should work fine right? Theoretically?

Im buying thin cotton pirate pants, a white cotton poofy shirt, and a white vest, along with a blue tricorn hat that Ill hand paint and just coat the whole thing.

Images are the paint Im gonna order, and then my regular ren faire pirate outfit, which is very, very similar to the pieces Ill be buying to dye.

I also understand this isnt necessarily dyeing the fabric so i might be in the wrong subreddit, but I was hoping that if this sounds like a bad idea, maybe someone else has an idea or knows where I could acquire something to make my vision come true.

TIA

How do I dye this? Dying a Tweed Peacoat?

Hello! I really wanted to buy this second hand Montana Northallerton peacoat. I’m black so I like to wear warmer tones. The peacoat in question is in very good condition, a reasonable price, looks cute, fully lined, my perfect size, is made out of purple and yellow herringbone 100% ‘pure new wool’. Like it’s genuinely perfect except the colour. It appears sort of grey from afar. I would love to be able to make the outer part either a deep chocolate brown or a deep burgundy. I don’t mind the inner lining colour. I’ve seen people say not to dye tweed at home so I’m hesitant to purchase it since I know I want it in a different colour. I live in England so does anyone have any tips/places to recommend going to in order to dye the outer part or should I give up?

How do I dye this? White linen to blue purple, first timer

Humbly seeking help from the experts to dye my beautiful unworn elopement dress to a periwinkle/cornflower/lilac colour so I can actually wear it. I'm okay with a light colour and if it's darker that's fine.

It's pure linen (I know the thread won't dye), it's pretty large and heavy and I can't imagine it fitting well on the stove? There is also boning in the corset, would that be an issue at all?

What are my options and what would you do? I got pretty overwhelmed trying to google. I'm crafty but have never dyed anything and it cost a lot so I really don't want to eff this up!

Thanks!

Resources 100% Alpaca Blanks in Canada

Hello!

I'm looking for a new shop in Canada to order 100% white alpaca yarn for dyeing. I ordered from Ecru Yarns/Merino Textiles and the dye hasn't been taking very well. I use natural dyes and primarily work with alpaca, and the same dye pot is working very well for the merino I'm using (from amtex), so I'm not sure if there's an additive to the ecru brand yarn or what. I'm having a hard time finding another Canadian source that's 100% alpaca. If anyone knows of any mills, let me know!

How do I dye this? Could I Use RitDye Color Remover to Fade This Color?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I dyed this originally white cotton shirt using RitDye’s powder puff blue formula. I used the stovetop method, a cup of salt, and the RitDye color fixative to ensure as bright of a color as possible because I was worried it wouldn’t take, but it actually turned out TOO bright. Would I be able to use RitDye color remover to fade it somewhat? I’m not trying to completely remove the color, I just want a lighter/more faded color than what I have.

The color remover appears to be intended for pre-dyed fabrics, so I’m not sure if it would work. Should I try it, or just buy another shirt and re-dye it? I don’t want to buy the color remover if it’s unlikely to work.
