Craigslist Horror Drummers, when is it enough?

Found this kit on Facebook marketplace and I'm wondering how we even got to this point. Hanging drums and cymbals upside down? Do we really need 27 drums? I dont even think i could reach half of these from a sitting position! I have 4 toms on my personal kit, and i think thats pretty close to my personal max, but never have I considered something of this magnitude. This thing has its own gravitational pull towards the sun. I understand building a dream kit, and im all for it, but 27 drums???????? We're not even counting cymbals at this point!!! I'm drumset shaming. I dont think we need bunk bed set ups for our drumsets lol...

Showcase Installed a Kelly Shu kick mic system today...

What a rad invention! I took my time with the installation. Instructions were easy enough to follow, but you've gotta choose your own adventure on where to place the system, and how to run the cable from the mic out the drum.

I had some leftover XLR sockets from another project, so I decided to drill out my shell and mount the socket on the lower drummers-right side of the drum.

It took a few attempts at positioning the mic to get the best sound. Set up, tune up, hit "record" THUMP THUMP THUMP... Open it back up, reposition the mic and try again.

I was most excited to bring back an unported reso head without damaging the sensibilities of any sound engineers I may encounter.

I'm surprised that a mic enclosed inside a kick drum isn't just all attack. I'm able to pick up a lot of resonance from the heads and the shell. So much so that I had to sew up a little pad to dampen the shell reflection. I feel the raw recordings I took for testing are just as good as any raw kick tracks from any pro studio I've worked in. I think this'll be just as handy next time I record as it will be for future gigs. I'm pretty pumped to try it at my next gig.

Mic is an EV ND68 for anyone interested. Mounted in a 1960s Slingerland 14X20 kick.

Question What’s your drum hot take?

Mine’s the “your snare sounds so good” hype below any EAD drum recording.

THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME, and it doesn’t sound that good.

Kit Pic Rocking the 2-down setup this weekend.

Booked out the rehearsal studio again this weekend. Decided to take down my lovely Black Panther Velvetone kit, Ebenor Percussion Walnut stave snare and Pearl Masters MRV snare.

Absolutely love the finish of this kit and the shells are so punchy and warm. Thought I'd just share a few snaps for any like minded gear junkies.

I love to experiment with different setups, (4,5,6,7 piece) but 1 up 2 down never gets boring!

Kit Pic Getting setup in my basement finally. Still got lots to do , but it’s a start.

Moved into the new place in Nov of 25’. Had lots of work to do around the place plus a 2 year old running around. Finally getting some time to get my basement setup.

I used to drum a lot in high school and played in local bands and school bands. Then took a long hiatus due to other life stuff. Finally got a kit and got back into it a couple years ago, but I haven’t really been able to practice. I finally have a place and an electric kit so I can really get back into it and I’ve been playing with some friends a couple times a month. It’s been a blast. I missed it a whole lot.

Cheap Tama imperial star with some good heads and she sounds pretty good. Paiste rude 16” and 18” crash/ ride and 14” sabian aax xplosion hi hats. Paiste 502 21” ride.

Electric kit is an alesis surge

Discussion It took me years to realize, but I'm just not a '2-up' guy.

Post image

For years, I've been playing a standard "two-up" setup with the toms mounted on the kick drum. Lately, though, I realized how much extra effort it took just to hit my ride cymbal—I practically had to extend and reach out with my entire arm. Because of the position of the second rack tom, I couldn't bring the ride any closer to the left, otherwise it would end up covering almost half of that tom. Naturally, that also made actually using that tom awkward and pointless. Also, I realized that because the high tom sat a bit too far to the right, executing fills was actually way harder than it should have been.

So, I decided to switch things up and mounted the toms independently—what's known in the community as an "offset" setup. But then I realized I was fighting to reach the hi-hat. To keep both toms squarely in front of me without the high tom hitting the hi-hat stand, I had to push the hi-hat further away to the left. Basically, I solved my ride problem only to create a hi-hat problem. I was right back where I started.

Recently, I finally switched to a "one-up" setup and positioned the rack tom exactly where I wanted it. The ergonomic relief is unreal—now I can effortlessly reach pretty much every piece of the kit. Due to space constraints, I couldn't jump straight to a 1-up, 2-down setup yet, but as soon as I move to a bigger room, that's the dream.

For years, I let the industry dictate how a kit should be set up with two rack toms. Looking back, I feel like I was dead wrong.

Start with a slow 4/4 drum beat keeping the kick drum steady as a 16th double beat each quarter note. Then move the hihat and snare back beat one 16th partial. Make it a grid.

Question 1 vs 2 rac tom

I use 2-3 rac toms and could never imagine using one. I like the wider range of sounds and one rac tom just feels extremely limiting. Funny enough I’ve heard people play with only one rac tom and it sounds amazing.

For people who only use one rac tom do you feel like you’re sacrificing a lot of sound? Wouldn’t it be worth it to add just one more tom?

I know people prefer it because of gigs and ergonomics but I’m just talking about in a sound aspect.

Hey everyone! I had been spending some time learning how to count out loud while playing. And tonight I tried to record a quick practice session. I'm not entirely sure if my counting and timing as well as playing are correct.

Any feedback or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

Help Where can I buy replacement plastic bushings for a Pearl Eliminator P-2052C?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I've been using my Pearl Eliminator P-2052C double bass drum pedal quite actively for about 4 years. Recently, I noticed that the bolt on the left side of the main pedal kept coming loose. At first, I simply tightened it again, but about a month later, it came completely loose while I was playing.

I removed the bolt to investigate and discovered that the flanged plastic bushing around it was worn down on one side.

After looking into how the hinge is assembled, I managed to address the issue with the bolt coming loose. However, I also noticed that the footboard still has some lateral play (it moves slightly from side to side). I suspect the worn bushings are responsible for this, so I'd like to replace them on both pedals.

Each pedal appears to have four bushings: two in the footboard hinge and two in the heel plate assembly that connects the footboard to the base. The bushings in the heel plate are slightly longer and have a different shape, including a hole.

The problem is that I can't find these bushings anywhere online. They don't seem to be listed as separate replacement parts in Pearl's official documentation either, which is strange considering they're plastic components that wear down over time.

Has anyone here replaced these bushings on a Pearl Eliminator pedal? If so, where did you get the replacements? Are they available as official spare parts, or did you find compatible ones from another manufacturer? I'd also appreciate any recommendations for aftermarket bushings or places to order them, including Chinese marketplaces like AliExpress or Temu.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
