Everyone’s talking about the Kubrick Collection… Meanwhile, my preorder has arrived.

Full labels are incoming from Etsy that look professional. These are the Mediaxpo 5 Clear 10 Disc DVD Case. I spent a lot of time finding a good solution and I wanted to save some in need some time. It doesn’t feel good taking discs in and out of the cardboard sleeves. Feels like you’re jamming them into somewhere they shouldn’t be. This is the best solution I found. The nice Etsy are is a plus and are sized perfectly for the cases I got.

Just wasn’t a fan of the cover Criterion made up for the film, so I decided to use the iconic poster art to create my own version for my copy. Happy with how it turned out!

I've held off buying any of the Eclipse line because I always held out hope they'd get Blu-ray upgrades someday. And that day is finally here! But the first movie I'll watch will definitely be The Princess Bride in honor of Rob Reiner and to check out the book packaging. Been wanting that one for a while.
All the Eclipses are blind buys, and the only reason I got them was the the Blu-ray upgrade, especially the Carlos Saura set which I'm very glad is back on print.
I had hoped to pick up the Kubrick set but maybe I dodged a bullet with all the packaging complaints I keep hearing about. If they're gonna keep doing this fancy packaging, they need proper disc holders. Stop with the cardboard sleeves.

Paul Verhoeven is one of my favorite directors. I just love how satirical, violent, and provocative his movies can be. As such, I've seen every movie he's made since 1985 from Flesh + Blood to Benedetta.
However, the biggest blindspot for me regarding Verhoeven are the movies he made in his native country, The Netherlands. All of these movies (with the exception of Spetters) haven't been released in North America beyond DVD. Even so, all those DVDs are currently OOP. I did buy an Australian DVD of Turkish Delight a few years ago and man, these movies could really use new restorations.
I did some research and apparently, the rights for all these movies were held by producer Rob Houwer, who either refused to license or charged too much to license all of Verhoeven's early works. The lone exception is Spetters which received a Blu-Ray from Kino Lorber (which is OOP) and the BFI since Houwer didn't produce it. Houwer died last year so maybe it's the time for boutique labels to reach out and try to license these movies again?
Criterion did release RoboCop back in the day so there is a history with Verhoeven and there are no Dutch movies in the collection so why not start with the most iconic director to come from that country?
The box set would include 4K restorations of:
There are also some short films and TV work Criterion could try to include as well.

As my flash sale orders start coming in I thought I’d share one that I recently upgraded. This is Spinal Tap was one of the first DVDs I ever bought, and the third Criterion disc I picked up (the first was RoboCop and second was Silence of the Lambs). I originally bought it in January 1999 (27 years ago!) Super happy to have this in 4K now!

I absolutely love when art reuses other pieces of art in their own way. That's why I love stuff like collage art and sampling. One of my favorites as a concept is 24 Hour Psycho by Douglas Gordon, where he takes Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock and extends it to play over 24 hours

Never seen it before but worth a shot for $5!

First watch is likely Beast of No Nation. The lady friend has never seen it (or anything else for that matter) and it seems like it would be up her alley. We’re both Idris Elba fans, me ever since season one of The Wire aired, her after I showed her The Wire a couple years ago and subsequently discovering Elba is a swiftie (I know lol).
Like most, I was anticipating the release of the Kubrick set since the announcement. Since I started collecting I knew I needed to own his entire filmography in 4k.
Coup De Torchon is a blind buy. Any neo-noir with a decent reputation is a much watch for me. Add in descriptors like dark, nasty, existential I am all in.
On my want list for the near future:
- Wild At Heart
- The Grifters
- Deliverance!
- Christiane F.
- Nashville

This is everything I got using my $50 codes I had saved up. Still waiting for my other order to ship but you know…. Kubrick.
Gonna watch Blow Out first. Need a juicy thriller
I’ve been eyeballing the trilogy of life for a while now
Safe, I’ve heard it’s amazingly haunting and I’m big into films that discuss situations like the aids crisis
I’ve got another 8 including the Stanley Kubrick set coming so I’ll post again

Think I’ll regret it and a 4K set will be announced soon after? Cassavetes films are a little rough around the edges. I question how much a 4K restoration would improve things. Thoughts?

Just curious because I've been seeing people posting their collections they got and all the posts seem to be missing the moon landing. I thought it was supposed to be his complete collection? Did criterion just not get the rights to it or something?

Barry Lyndon, never seen it and I love Kubrick.
Been looking forward to getting 8 1/2 since seeing it for the first time a year ago
Barry Lyndon is a blind buy, I know I’ll love it though
Next sale I’m looking to add some more modern films. Possible “About Dry Grasses” or maybe “Wall-E”
So happy with the purchase, I wasn’t able to buy last time. I have yet to see Barry Lyndon and outside of a theatre viewing I can’t think of a better first experience with it.

Could only afford the one for the flash sale. I took a course on literary adaptations in grad school and was required to both read and watch The Dead. Both the short story and the movie are hauntingly beautiful and worth the read/watch.

I won't assume everyone's favorite is The Complete Kubrick.
Could be for the cool design, the great films you get with it, no rules for your reason.
I haven't finished Apu Trilogy, Colors Trilogy, Dekalog or the Cassavetes set so I'm not including them, among others.
Here's mine:
The Complete Kubrick (he's my 3rd favorite director all time)
Zatoichi
The World of Wong Kar Wai
Lone Wolf and Cub
The Ranown Westerns
Yojimbo/Sanjuro
The Before Trilogy
John Singleton's Hood Trilogy
Bruce Lee Greatest Hits
The Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse Set

My life is currently in shambles, but at least I have this.
Plan to watch these in chronological order if I can resist watching The Shining . . .
All of it.
I haven’t seen his early films so I guess those are ‘blind’.
Next purchase is whatever comes out this week!

I’m most excited to own SHOAH. I know it will be a moving experience and I’m ready to have deep feels and let it out.
I love David Bowie and so I’m also happy about Christiane F. (before there was Trainspotting).
Walker was a blind purchase, but I read about the whole production and it seems like an often overlooked film.
The first watch however, is gonna be The Damned.
Cheers.

The Human Condition trilogy has been on my list forever so I'm excited to finally get to it. I've been eyeballing godzilla for a long time and I managed to get godzilla for $90 with the coupons
Fires on the plain and ugetsu were kind of a blind buy. For most movies I like to go in as blind as possible.
Bonus shin godzilla 4k collectors edition for my godzilla collection. Can't wait for them to add minus one to the collection someday.

I've been watching horror movies the last couple of weeks for October Halloween vibes, and I thought to myself tonight, let me take a break from horror and pop in the last movie I haven't seen from the sale - Lost Highway. Lol, man this movie is kind of fucked up. The sound design, disturbing images and quick cuts, metal music at times, it was crazy.
I watched Mulholland Drive for the first time a couple months ago, which was brilliant by the way, even it had some stuff that was messing with me. I have no doubt I'll be thinking about this one for days or weeks to come as well. Lynch is a master, I'm glad I've been introduced to him, as late as it may be. I am going to add Blue Velvet to my Christmas list in hopes that the family snags it for me. Just absolutely elite. There are some directors where you can just tell it's their movie even if you don't know who directed it going into it. I think Tarantino has that, Kubrick, many others, Lynch is definitely like that. I've only seen the two but I'm going to keep exploring! Thanks for pointing me in his direction everyone
Edit: failed to mention Robert Blake... Jesus Christ
