Back in February, I moved with my partner from London back to Berlin to look after my dad, who unfortunately passed away from cancer in May. It’s been a painful move, especially given everything going on in my family, so one of the first things we did was adopt two British cats, Wallie and Beanie.
Over time, I’ve grown to love both of them deeply. They’re the sweetest, most loving kittens I’ve ever met! But they have very different personalities. Wallie (the BLH) is bold, adventurous and loves exploring, whilst Beanie (the BSH) is extremely shy and selective about who she opens up to. Beanie is much more of a baby personality-wise, and I think that brings out a particularly protective side of me.
Because of that, I’ve spent a lot of time helping Beanie settle in and feel safe and comfortable at home. And it’s worked! She now comes to cuddle me in bed, makes biscuits on me, sleeps beside me, gives me headbutts and absolutely loves her little bum pats or being petted on the bathroom rug. For some reason, that’s one of her favourite places in the world!
I genuinely feel that these two cats were a gift from life at a time when I needed them most. They’ve brought so much happiness into what has otherwise been an incredibly difficult year.
And I feel that whenever Beanie comes to me for affection, or simply chooses to curl up next to me, something inside me heals a little. I know she doesn’t understand what I’ve been through, but having this tiny baby trust me so completely and feel safe means more to me than I can put into words.
Just tonight, she came to sit beside me on the bed, made herself into a little loaf and eventually lowered her head onto the mattress and fell asleep. I was just watching her, and I genuinely started tearing up thinking about how much I love her.
And I love Wallie just as dearly, but as I already mentioned before, there’s something about Beanie that brings out this overwhelming urge to protect her and make sure she’s always safe, healthy and happy. She’s my little baby.
It’s been over six months now, and I genuinely feel like Beanie is my little soulmate. I never expected to form such a deep emotional bond with a cat, but here we are.
I don’t think they’ll ever understand just how much they’ve helped me through this year, or how much they mean to me. But I hope that, in their own little cat way, they know how loved they are.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of bond with their cat, particularly after going through a difficult time in life?
