Could barely run 3 minutes in July and now I ran 7 km without stopping

Been lurking here for a while but finally have something to post haha

Started running consistently back in July and could barely run for 3 minutes before needing a walking break. Just managed 7.08 km nonstop in 50:41 and honestly feeling pretty damn happy about it

About a month or two into running I bought the Adidas Adizero Evo SL and they felt like a complete game changer for me. Didn’t expect shoes to make that much of a difference

Going from those little intervals to running for 50 minutes straight has been so satisfying. But I ain’t stopping here, next goal is 10k by the end of December

My watch recorded an average of 186 bpm so I’m planning to slow things down quite a bit and work on running at an easier effort while building up the distance

Would love any advice from people who’ve been here before. Been reading everyone else’s posts for months, so figured I’d finally share mine :)

10K Running

This one’s to all the people who dampen themselves over not running 10K at certain run times, if you’re running it consistently and not stopping you’re estimated to be in the top 3% in the world.

Hope this post sends people motivation and love, all runners start from the start. Have a blessed day fellow runners!

Iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another 🏃‍♂️

Training Progress First 10K done!

Post image

So happy to share that I have completed the 5-10K program from the Just Run app 😄 (started C25K back in July)

I felt like I could keep going at the end (kept on running in the cooldown period) and managed to get a 10K on the last training day (week 6 day 3)

What should I do next? Train for a half marathon? Or improve 10k? My goal is to run a full marathon by the end of next year. Any advice is welcome!

Cool Moment

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to share a small but meaningful interaction I had today that I think this community will appreciate!

On my run today, I ran by a woman who was taking a walk and she gave me a smile and thumbs up. When I ran by her again a few minutes later, she told me how much she admired me and how she wished she could run like me. She smiled again and that was the end of our conversation.

I’ve shared in this group before that I often struggle with calling myself a runner, but something about this stranger seeing me and my efforts, and acknowledging them, was so meaningful and encouraging.

I know this comment seems so small, but her acknowledgment made me think “You know what? I am a runner!”

I figured if anyone could relate to this it would be individuals in this group and I just wanted to share :)

Started at 36 a little more than half a year ago and couldnt keep up a 3min run/walk split I finally got out of the red and being able to sustain a 3:30run/3:00walk split.

I think i ramped up too much too fast though because my legs have been beat and getting some shinsplints after runs but ill chalk that up to being hyped.

First half marathon race

Post image
• Upvotes

I started running in March and did my first half marathon race this past weekend. I was lucky to have a friend who's more experienced to run with and help pace me for the race, especially at the end when nothing is left. Official race time was 1:57, which was my sub 2 hour goal. Quite happy with how it turned out

Training Help Do you prioritize distance or speed goals?

As title says. Would you work on speed first before increasing distance, or would you prioritize distance?

I started running in May this year and so far I'm really happy with the whole journey. I signed up for two 10k races and had a blast both times.

Now that I feel more confident with that distance, I don't know whether it's time for me to start running faster or farther. I know most training plans (like the Nike Run Club plan for half marathons) usually include both long runs and interval runs, but I don't think I could focus on both distance and speed right now.

I already hit the gym 3 times a week, in December I'll start snowboarding at least once a week if not twice, and I'm scared that if I add a lot of running, I'll just feel tired all the time without seeing much progress in any sport. The idea of finally hitting 15k sounds amazing, until I remember it might take me a while to recover and I would need to skip the gym or a day on the slopes.

Plus, mentally it would be easier for me to have one simple goal, like "run a half marathon, no matter how slow" or "run 10k in one hour".

Any thoughts?

Long runs are messing with my body's RHR and HRV. What should I do?

So lately I'm pushing my long runs past 12 to 15 miles and I'm so happy that my stamina is increasing. But these long stretches makes me hot and my body does not cool down till long after I go to bed. my garmin shows an elevated heart rate (+5 to 8 BPM) during the first 3 to 4 hours of sleep. Btw, it should dip in the first cycle of sleep. As a result, my HRV is also low because my cardiovascular system is working overtime to cool down my body.

So to manage my body heat, I take a shower, drink a good amount of water and electrolytes, and crank the AC down to 63°F. All these things, instead of cooling my entire body down, make my feet get ice cold. So now, heat is trapped in my torso and my feet are cold as eff, and this weird body temperature mechanism wakes me up all night. The next day, it's the same cycle, with no proper recovery in between.

I was doing my research on what I can do for my condition. I found that there are mattress layers or toppers that can adjust the temperature of the bed as per your body needs. So I came across this brand of mattress topper, chilipod, that offers two sides with different temperatures, like left and right. then there is another brand, oval, that offers four zones. Like different temperatures for the upper and lower body, and on he left and right sides.

So I'm basically here to ask around if anyone has used any of these toppers and which ones are most effective. Do these layers actually help in regulating body temperature? Share your thoughts and experiences.

Motivation Needed what do you do when you have zero motivation to go for a run?

i enjoy running once i'm actually outside, but getting myself out the door is the hardest part. some days i keep putting it off until i end up skipping the run completely. i don't want to rely on motivation because it obviously comes and goes. what habits helped you stay consistent when you were just starting out?

First Race Prep 3k or 5k 3 weeks before a 5k race?

So I’ve already signed up for a big event 5k run on December 12 but I found another race on November 21st that I wanna sign up for but I’m stuck between choosing the 3k distance or the 5k distance on that day.
I’m still quite new at this, I’ve been running 2 times a week, sometimes 2 outdoor and 1 treadmill run a week, and I’ve so far managed 1km straight running without having to walk.
My first ever official run will be the 5k on December 12th where I’ve set myself a target time, the November run is just gonna be for fun but idk which distance to pick.
Help would be appreciated greatly!

Training Progress Half Marathon Training Mistakes - What Next?

I ran my first half marathon 9 years ago when I was 31. I don’t recall too much about it, but ran it around 2 hours 10, after training a fair amount. Following that, I drifted away from running.

Last year, approaching 40, I decided to run again, entering a half marathon. I started building up miles and embarked on a 16-week training plan leading into the race. I didn’t know what I was doing.

I misinterpreted ‘easy’ runs as that they should feel easy at a good pace. So I ran them at a steady pace for me and always tried to finish fast. I was always disappointed by the times. I had no energy to do intervals (presumably because I didn’t do any easy miles).

When I got to the longer training runs I’d be exhausted, but I thought that’s what I was meant to feel like. I did 16km (longest training run) going at about 6:20min per km. I tapered (following the plan) and actually did an ‘easy’ 10km the week prior to the race. I felt amazing going slower and it suddenly clicked what I should’ve been doing. A quick google later and it all made sense.

During the race itself, I ran very consistent splits to finish in 2 hours 15. Each 5km time was almost identical. I was hoping to be able to run the last 5km faster but my legs were sore, presumably as I hadn’t accumulated any easy miles. Nearly every training run had been at the same pace, I couldn’t accelerate to finish faster.

I’ve entered next year’s race, and have started doing actual easy runs. It’s amazing to finish a long run and not feel exhausted. I’m doing intervals with the intention of improving 5km and 10km times along the way.

My plan is this: do an 8 week block now to set a 10km time and learn to run faster (sensibly). Then tick along in winter/early spring to accumulate easy miles and make 10-15km runs common. So when I start next year’s half marathon training block I’ll be starting in the right place. If all goes to plan I think sub 2 hours might be possible. Am I deluded? Does the plan make sense?

New Runner Advice Advice for new-ish runner

Hi! I am 35f and am curious if you have advice on how I can make my runs more comfortable. I’ve lost almost 75 pounds in the past few years. Currently 5’4, 170 lbs and blessed with a chest (DD/DDD). I had spinal fusion 20 years ago so I have rods along almost my full spine. I have found that compression sports bras really help and if I don’t wear something with enough support/compression my back is so unhappy with me.

I’m curious if anyone has suggestions on items that may help make my runs less uncomfortable.

Thank you!

Training Help How much more difficult is this then running flat?

Post image
5 Upvotes

It’s a 1.5 mile run. So I guess I’m going uphill for 85 ft then down hill 85ft I’m not 100% how to read this tho I could be wrong.

but my 1.5 mile time on this is about 16 minutes.

but the beginning of the run is all up hill. Not extremely uphill but noticeably uphill.

im training for the military 1.5 mile run and am wondering if I’ll be much faster flat ground.

i do not have access to flat ground I live in a very elevated area and the closest track is like an hour away.

Ran with a friend that regularly does half marathons. His conversational pace is around 9:50 but he was happy to stay at my pace. He’s been a great motivator for me these past few months.

Training Progress Completed 10 Mile Race and Half Marathon in Three Weeks: Sub-2 Hour Half-Marathon Viable?

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I was someone that never wanted anything to do with running earlier this year. In May, an old friend reached out to me and asked if I wanted to do a half-marathon with her in a city nearby. At the same time, I wanted to get back into working out so I said yes why not, I’ll start training and I’ll try to survive it in the 3-hour time limit.

Fast forward to now, I’ve made more progress than either of us expected. I just completed a 10-mile race yesterday in a much faster speed than expected. She (someone who has been running for years and completed her first marathon) is confident I can do a sub-2 hour half-marathon if I work on reducing the scale of my negative split from my most recent race.

I wanted to come here to ask whether this is a reasonable goal or whether it might be a stretch. I have two more weeks of 30 miles a week remaining in my personal training schedule before I taper in my last week. I think I’m just off the two-hour mark but if it’s achievable, I’m happy to put my all on the table. Any advice is welcome.

If this is helpful, my race routine from this last race is as follows:
- 1 mile shakeout less than an hour before the race
- empty all bowels right before the race starts
- take a Gu energy gel 10-20 min before the race
- fuel every 5 miles with energy gels and grab 1-2 cups of water at each water stop after 500 ml water bottle runs out

First Race Prep My first 5k is getting real

What do you wish someone had told you before your first race?

I signed up for my first 5k and now that it's getting closer, i'm suddenly overthinking everything. do i need to practice running the full distance beforehand, or is being comfortable with shorter runs enough? i'm trying not to turn this into a whole stressful project when i literally started running for fun.

Looking for advice- newbie

Hey guys!!

I’m starting my running journey for my mental health and also for general fitness and I just want some advice and tips to help me out! I’m so so new to this, been working from home for 2 years now and have gotten really lazy.

I completed my first run today by doing 3 minute runs with 2 minute walking. I managed 4 1/2 reps of this but it really tired me out for the rest of the day so any advice would be amazing as I’m super new to all of this! Anything to avoid, how to eat before or after a run, shoe recommendations, anything I would really appreciate!

Thankyou so much!

New Runner Advice Overweight trying to do couch to half marathon

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi I have started a 20 week program to go from “couch to half marathon”

I’m currently overweight relatively active but will be from this week running 3 times a week, strength training twice a week and playing football once a week (already own boots)

I have had meniscus surgery in my left knee and when running with the current shoes I have it feels like I’m thudding the floor likely from a mix of weight and crappy shoes.

I need shoes that are under £100 and will work well for wet pavement.

Any recommendations please?

Training Help Does this plan look okay for a first half marathon?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm running a half marathon with my partner next April and wanted to put a plan together to follow. Does this plan look feasible for a half? We're looking at just completing this one so I haven't added in sprint intervals, I'd probably add that in for a second half marathon if all goes well this time.

Any advice would be really appreciated
