Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

I live in North Carolina. Found a single bug in my bathroom but I’m unsure if it’s a bedbug or not. Afterwards I flipped every mattress and couch in the house. Dressers included. Saw no evidence.

The exterminator says we're close to being able to say we are clear. I don't think I've ever been so paranoid in my life

Found dead/shed in the bed of my aunt’s rarely used guest room. It crumbled to dust when pressed.

Smaller shiny reddish-brown beetles were also in the room which seems like carpet beetles. No bites on anyone.

Bed Bug On My Comforter

Post image

Found a bed bug crawling on my comforter this morning. I honestly got scared and killed or immediately.

I tried look for more signs to see if there was an infestation but they weren’t any. Although I had to get to work so it wasn’t as thorough. I don’t have any bites either.

Immediately let my landlord know and called pest control people. Got same day appointment but they messed up my phone number and couldn’t get ahold so the technician had to move on. Booked another one for tomorrow.

I live in a two bedroom apartment. The other room is empty but lately I have been putting my laundry on a chair and basket in there and a few other things.

I haven’t been out and about a lot either. Although, my boyfriend has been coming over and stuff. I haven’t been to his place or anyone else’s place for that matter.

Having bed bugs was one of my biggest fears and now that fear has come true today. My anxiety is through the roof. I can’t concentrate on work. I am worried sick at this moment.

What precautionary measure can I take before the technician visit tomorrow? Me and my landlord will be inspecting my room together after I am done work today as well.

Identification Found in hotel in Japan

Very small, about 1-2 mm and light brown to amber color. Many seen, especially in bathroom hiding in damp areas and some found on bed and on bedroom walls, but none found under the sheets and bedding that I could see. Photo posted was on 6x zoom, hence it's grainy and it looks darker than it actually is. If these aren't bed bugs, any idea what they are? Thanks!

Location: north west England U.K.
very small and thin, it fell on its back and it was bending itself to try and get back up at one point.
Incredibly thin, won’t really come close to me, hard to pick up and get pics of.
What the hell is it. It’s not attempted to fly, I found it by the front door when I came home, so not sure if it fell off of me or if it was already here. Saw it on my slider.

Requesting community support Any Success Stories of DIY Without the Help of a Professional?

Please tell me your success stories of doing it on your own without the help of a professional? Is it possible? My exterminator told me that my bed bug problem is so minimal that I could do it on my own. That extreme heat treatment would just be a very pricey unnecessary expense if I could do all of the recommended steps with dedication.

However, I am in full blown panic mode. I am on day 7 and I could really use some uplifting hope/reassurance/advice. I want to be optimistic about this but I am a pessimistic person at heart.

I found a bite under my sock this morning, it’s a small red raise on my ankle with a red bite mark in the middle but there’s only one. started looking around my mattress. Do any of these things have something to do with bedbugs?

Gatlinburg bed bugs

As the title says, we went to Gatlinburg last week and checked into an inn off the main strip on Wednesday afternoon; early the next morning (around 2 a.m.), I woke up after being bitten by something. It was a very large bed bug, and unfortunately, I found 3 smaller babies after tearing the sleeper sofa apart. We checked out Thursday morning around 8:30 a.m., 3 days earlier than planned, leaving behind a lot of personal items we had brought with us (blanket, pillow, and a soft bag), as I could not run the risk of bringing anything to the new hotel or even home. We put our two suitcases and the bags we did keep in the back of my Bronco and went to Dollywood for the day.

Afterwards, we went to a car wash, where we emptied the contents of the suitcases and ALL bags into trash bags, then double-bagged those as well. We then sprayed the inside and outside of the suitcases with 91% rubbing alcohol, then vacuumed them as thoroughly as we could; we also used the air hose to spray out the seams, zippers and hard to reach areas. We then sprayed the trunk of my Bronco down as well, used the air hose on it, and vacuumed the trunk thoroughly. I also tried to vacuum the rest of the interior as good as I could just to be safe. We put the empty suitcases and all double-bagged trash bags back into the car and went to a laundromat next.

There, we put all clothes, bags, shoes and other soft items into dryers, and dried all items on high heat for 30 minutes. We then washed all items, except 2 leather bags and our shoes, then dried the washed items again on high heat for 30 minutes. We also wiped down all toiletries, souvenirs, and other items that couldn't be dried. We then repacked the suitcases and toiletry bags and checked into our new hotel around 9:30 p.m. We stayed there the next 3 nights with no issues, or any evidence of bed bugs in the new room OR in our suitcases. We kept all items up off the floor except our shoes, and all dirty clothes went into a trash bag that was kept on a table.

We left Sunday morning and made the 6-hour drive home; upon arrival home, I threw the dirty clothes from the trash bag directly into the dryer and dried them on high heat again for 30 minutes. I then washed and dried them again on high heat until dry. The clean clothes were also dried again for 30 minutes on high heat and then taken into the house. I ended up throwing away the cloth suitcase we had, as I just didn't want to risk it, and sprayed the hard-shell suitcase inside and out with bed bug spray we got on the way home. That suitcase has been sitting outside since we got home. I also sprayed our shoes inside and out with the same spray and wiped down all other items, such as toiletries and souvenirs, before taking them inside. The only thing I failed to do once we got home was have the kids immediately take off their travel clothes before going into the house and sitting on the couch. They didn't give me their clothing until about an hour later. I also sprayed the inside of my Bronco yesterday because, again, I'm worried we had a straggler come home with us.

Given everything that I did, how likely is it that we will have an infestation now? How likely is it that I missed a bug in my Bronco?

I did alert the property manager on Thursday morning to what I found and sent photos, requesting a refund. They later confirmed they found one other bed bug on the couch where I had slept, but nothing in the bedroom area where my kids were sleeping.

What are your experiences with using DE (not cimexa) as your main method of eradication?

I have a very small return of bed bugs (I know how to spot the signs and am highly reactive to bites within a few hours) and I want to go the natural route as much as possible. A friend used DE and said it worked really well but before that I was skeptical.

I already have mattress and pillow covers in place + hot wash / freezing all fabrics after every use + interceptors on the bed + hoovering.

Next step, I'm thinking is to spray DE with the specific spray tool, on all surfaces and cracks and crevices, and even inside the mattress covering to get anything in there. Then I will hoover it up and reapply this every 5 days (not sure how long I will be able to keep doing this but hopefully 2-3 months?)

Have you tried a similar approach and did it work for you?
