Useful Information Bedbug ID and common misidentifications

Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

  1. Carpet beetle larvae (Dermestidae) and adult - More Info

  2. Bat bug (Cimex adjunctus pictured) - More Info

  3. Cockroach nymphs - More Info

  4. Tick (nymphs) - More Info

  5. Woodlouse - More Info

  6. Kissing bugs - More Info

  7. Booklice/barklice - More Info

  8. Smooth spider beetle - More Info

  9. Drugstore beetle - More Info

Note: If it has wings or more than 6 legs, it is not a bed bug. Do not mistake antennae for legs, look at the illustrated guide to avoid confusion.

I’ve picked up an old vintage chest of drawers and noticed this bug in one of the crevices. The bug is very dead, dry and a bit out of shape but would be very grateful for any opinions on whether this looks like a bed bug? Thanks in advance !

Useful Information Interceptors

This may be a tad long but I need opinions it’s destroying my mental health. So June 19th ( 18 almost 19 weeks ago) I found a bed bug walking across my blanket at like 4 am. I freaked out and flipped this house upside down I found the 1 shed on the side of the bed where I saw him and nothing more, I put the shed and the one bug in a bowl then hid the bowl. I then called a pest company he came out looked through my whole bed and room and did NOT find any signs. I hid the bowl so he would look before just confirming that the bug was a bed bug. He said he did not find any signs but brought his little dog down here and it was the end of the day. The dog sat next to the couch and he gave him a bone and he would stand then go sit back to “ alert” he also alerted to my bed. And just kept doing it. My kitchen is about 8 steps to the couch which is where I hid this bowl. He also said he saw some carpet beetles. Anyways after forward to today. It’s been almost 19 weeks. No bites, no signs, and I check these interceptors weekly that I have on my bed and there always clear. At what point do I know I am in the clear or do I not? Do I just have to keep interceptors and my bed in the middle forever? If you read this thank you I know it’s a lot but this has taken my life over all over 1 bug.

Infestation- advice needed

I live in a two bedroom apartment, and while my bed seems to be fine, my "parents" (complicated and irrelevant) bed was infested. Mother has been waking up the past three days itching all over and went to the doctor thinking she had a rash, at which point the doctor said it was definutely bug bites. My father also has shingles, and he thinks (with hindsight) he's been getting bitten a few months (!!!). Flipped the mattress and sure enough, there they were. Three layers of sheets deep. No identification really needed, though we did take photos. Mother washes sheets once every two weeks, though, so we're really unsure of when it started.

That's the short of it. My parents are rather old, so I'm assisting as best as I can around work. My father is resistant to notifying the super, but I might do it anyway, especially since it's unlikely we got it anywhere but from neighbors, since we don't go anywhere and don't buy stuff second hand.

Problem is that we have two cats, and as a result both my parents don't want to get an exterminator.

I'm ordering a steamer and a mattress protector for them, though they'll probably get a new one anyway, since it's long been the time to replace it. We'rr going to go through the trst of the furniture and checking, and going to blast our stuff in a dryer (though I'm worried the laundromat might tell us to beat it if they know). The problem is that I don't really have a traditional bed per se- I sleep on a cot with an air mattress/topper on top of it, along with blankets for extra cushion. Do I order another mattress protector and wrap it around the whole thing? Will the bed bugs travel to my room if they have two human hosts and 2 cats in the other? On top of that, its not really feasible for me to pull my bed away from any walls/tables/etc. Will this impede any progress?

I'm genuinely really upset about this news. I used to have bed bugs when I was in elementary, way back when, and I don't remember much but the experience was rather poor. Different place, though, so completely unrelated. I was supposed to travel for Christmas to see a friend of mine and now dread that being cancelled, and I have a work event in about two weeks I now don't know what to do with. I'm so sorry for the long post, it's been a sleepless night and I'm scared. I've been feeling itchy all over but not bitten- just an anxious response. And I scheduled my next therapy session to be online because if I gave my therapist bed bugs that would suck so so much.

I've been getting these bumps on my arms for weeks. I've checked the seams of my mattress, inside my pillow, and my sheets, I have baby pink sheets and haven't seen anything on them, I spit on any black spec to see if it will smear and none have yet. but I keep getting these bumps and don't know what's going on.

I found the first image on the floor, the second was dead in a drawer, and then my arms

Bed bugs science

Hi

There are scientists that investigate bed bugs and how can possible one day discover something that could eliminate them easily? I don't understand how it could be not the case as these bed bugs can damage you very much financially and mentally...

I just spotted this thing and smashed it, I haven't been having any bites (I am allergic so it'd be obvious to me) so what are the chances it'd be just the one vs a larger infestation if it is the bastard

Hi, we landed in Honolulu and just got settled into our Airbnb. King matttess and a pull-out couch for five of us.

Exhausted and ready for sleep, but when we were getting the pull-out couch ready, we found these dead bugs on the pullout mattress.

Are checked the king mattress, and found done dark stains near the frame.

Are we screwed??

Bed bug advice

So I found a few bites on my leg last week that are consistent with bed bug bites. An inspector came today and he found no signs of bed bugs. Some more bites appeared today though so I’m fairly certain it is bed bugs. I haven’t actually seen any bugs in my room but I’m still concerned. I want to treat before it’s too late so I found a company that will come to do the aprehend treatment but from what I’ve read, it can take a month for it to work. Here’s my question: I live with roommates in a 4 bedroom apartment, how concerned should I be that it will spread to their bedrooms and the living room as well before the treatment works? Also, can I spread the bed bugs to other people’s homes when I visit them? What if I sleep over at someone’s house, is that a concern?

And should I do a heat treatment as well once the Aprehend has been applied or would that not be advisable? I’m really anxious about this and I can’t sleep because of all of these questions so I would really appreciate some answers and whatever help/advice you can offer. Thank you.

Found this on a paper that was on the floor in my child’s room. It was basically dead, was not moving. When I squished it, no blood came out. But I did see a little black dot come out on the paper near its butt. Checked everything. I don’t see any feces marks, did not find any more bugs, no shedding. Is this a bed bug or a bat bug?? Could it just be a lone traveler? I’m spiraling please give me advice

Requesting community support Is this mattress encasement enough?

So I found a colony a Month ago nesting on my mattress skirt. I removed all of my old bed stuff but my mattress and threw an encasement on it before I got treatment. I think this was a mistake as now there is nothing to kill the bed bugs possibly inside my mattress.

I haven’t had any signs since and I know they can live almost a year in the right conditions and that any tears could let them out. But my question is, will this zipper keep them from getting out in the meantime? Or do I need to put a fancier mattress encasement on?

Found a bedbug on my wall, as well as some marks on the inside of my pillow. This happened exactly a year ago and I still live my parents and I feel super bad about this. I feel like it’s my fault tbh… last time we had heat treatment, did it not work? funnily enough (it’s not funny) we had bed bugs exactly a year ago. last October. Treatment was on Halloween.

i posted on another subreddit asking for these bugs i found in my daughter’s school bag to be identified, and multiple people confirmed they were bedbugs. we saw two.
so we looked through the entire bag and every item - no more bugs or eggs. it’s currently in the freezer at -18f with her other items that we suspected, and we’re washing the clothes she wore that day at high heat. the bed is clear, we checked everything and found absolutely nothing. we think they came from her morning bus and are letting the school know. should i still be concerned? is there anything else i can do to ensure they don’t infest again? i unfortunately can’t take her to school myself with my work schedule, so i don’t exactly know what to do.
any advice is much appreciated. i struggle with severe ocd so infestations are genuinely my worst fear. i believe / want to believe we’re okay, but if anyone thinks i should do anything else please do tell.

Identification Identification and advice?

Two weeks ago, I spotted this little dude running along a seam on an outdoor sofa at an Airbnb in Nicaragua. I was too scared to ask what it was at the time. Is this a bedbug?

It’s been two weeks, and I haven’t noticed any bites during my travels. The friend I’m travelling with hasn’t mentioned any bites or unusual itching either.
If it it, have we been incredibly lucky, or could this little nightmare still hitch a ride back to the UK with me and ruin my life? Please tell me I’m being dramatic. Help!

I’m paranoid, I’ve stumbled upon the bedbugs for the first time in the hotel 2 weeks ago. My legs got bitten and now healing. I threw out my whole suitcase and my outside clothes before entering the apartment, I literally stepped in naked and barefoot. I brought only phones and passports- everything paper is in the freezer, wrapped in ziplock bags and sorted outside home before entering the freezer (-18’ C for 2 weeks). I only have one electronic device that is in quarantine. I’ve just noticed new lines of bumps/ bites, two weeks after coming back home. I don’t think it’s a delayed response. It’s on the side of my chest, underneath my arm close to the armpit. Are these bites? Do I have high chances of getting them?

Wtf is this itch

so I have this insane itch that went away and then all of a sudden came back. It is all over my body and itches 24/7. I even itch outside of my home and my legs and back especially itch when I bend down. All of a sudden my skin became ashy. My hand turned almost white due to ash and all ofna sudden had scabs and the hair follicles are darker. The weird thing is if I see bites it's only one singular red dot. I wish I knew what it was so I can get it solved
