I just watched this movie for the first time the other day, and I was curious what species of bat was used in the beginning of the film. While I love bats, I know there's so many species I don't know and there's few good shots of them in the movie. I wanted to guess pallid bat or Mexican free tailed or something similar, but I'm not sure. I'd imagine plenty of the shots are fake bats, but some definitely seem real. Unfortunately any info about animal actors in the movie are focused on the dogs that played Cujo himself 😭

• During the War of 1812 and the Civil War, soldiers would score nearby caves for bat droppings, which contained potassium nitrate, an essential ingredient in gunpowder.

• At Richmond National Battlefield Park, researchers studied the bat population in 2016-2017 using acoustic detectors and found the little brown bat, a Virginia endangered species, was commonly found on the Cold Harbor and Gaines Mill battlefields.
• At Petersburg National Battlefield, researchers found the federally endangered Indiana bat and the Northern long-eared bat within the park’s boundaries.

Ever since I came to Australia, I’ve been longing to see these huge bats in the wild, and today I FINALLY got to see them!! I’m so excited!! 🥺
I’ve had a tough day, and just watching them hanging and chilling in the breeze was so therapeutic. I could honestly watch them all day! I never knew they were this talkative or had such cheeky little personalities!

Vampire bats survive entirely on blood! 🦇

Rather than sucking it out, these sanguivores nick a resting animal with razor-sharp teeth and lap up what flows. Since blood is mostly water, their digestive systems rapidly absorb the fluid while their specialized kidneys filter out the excess, meaning the bats can pee mid-meal!
That clever trick keeps them light enough for the flight home.
