Hi everyone,
I'm reaching out because I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed and anxious about the condition of my teeth and mouth.
I have a history of an eating disorder, and I'm aware that I've experienced significant enamel erosion. I'm particularly concerned about the backs of my upper front teeth, where the yellow/orange areas are very noticeable.
I haven't been to the dentist in over 5 years, and I'm honestly frightened about what they might find and how extensive or difficult treatment could be. I've finally scheduled an appointment for mid-November, and I'm trying to prepare myself for what comes next.
I'm also concerned about the roof of my mouth. I've noticed purplish discoloration, visible veins, and raised areas, and I'm unsure whether these are normal or something that should be evaluated.
A little background:
- I have a history of an eating disorder and significant concerns about enamel erosion.
- I haven't had a dental examination or professional cleaning in over 5 years.
- I've experienced very mild gum bleeding.
- I have a longstanding brown spot on an upper tooth that hasn't noticeably changed in years. I'm unsure whether it's an old composite filling or decay.
- I'm particularly worried about the yellow appearance and possible dentin exposure behind my upper front teeth.
- I'm concerned about the appearance and health of my palate as well.
My biggest questions are about moving forward with treatment:
- Based on these photos, how extensive does the damage appear, and what types of treatment might I need?
- For someone with significant erosion associated with an eating disorder, how complicated is the restorative process typically?
- Is it possible to preserve and restore teeth with substantial enamel loss, or does severe erosion sometimes require crowns or more extensive treatment?
- Can treatment be completed gradually, prioritizing the most important issues first, or does everything generally need to be addressed at once?
- How much improvement is realistically possible, both functionally and aesthetically?
- Does anything about the roof of my mouth appear concerning?
- What should I expect at my first dental appointment after such a long gap in care?
I understand that nobody can determine the full extent of the damage from photos alone, and that I'll need a proper examination and X-rays.
I'm not expecting a diagnosis here. I'm mainly hoping to understand what the road ahead could look like.
I'm especially afraid of being told that my teeth are beyond repair or that I'll need extensive, expensive procedures. I want to take care of my teeth and move forward, but the uncertainty is really overwhelming.
If any dentists have experience treating patients with eating-disorder-related erosion, I'd be incredibly grateful for your perspective.
Thank you so much for reading and for any advice. ❤️
